คำนำ
1. Let’s Start!
This section gets students thinking about the topic of the unit, usually in the form of a mini-discussion or
quiz. The main aim of this section is to start students thinking about some of the themes and ideas that will
come up in the listening(s). Some units include a few pictures or photos to help students to do so. Sometimes
vocabulary is previewed here but this is not done explicitly as a vocabulary exercise.
2. Conversation Flow
This section asks students to rearrange a few sets of scrambled conversations in order. Each conversation
introduces some common phrases related to the unit topic.
4. Let’s Listen!
This is the first listening task on the main listening material. Generally, the listening task is a gist question that
can only be answered by listening to the entire recording.
5. Listen Again
This is the second listening task on the main listening material, and requires students to listen more intensively
for details and specifics.
6. Listening Clinic
This section focuses on a particular pronunciation feature. The section has two parts.
The first part is an explicit presentation. It begins with an example of the pronunciation feature which is
shown in Notice box and followed by a few sentences or conversations. Then students listen to the sentences
or the conversations and pick out the target feature being presented in the examples.
The second part is a gap-fill activity. The students listen to a conversation and write down the missing words.
These missing parts might or might not include the words which has the target phonological features.
See the section called How to Teach Listening Clinics for more information.
7. Focus on Patterns
This section gives students an opportunity to practice their “top-down” predictive skills, using their knowledge
of grammar and discourse. The important thing is to have students read the conversations and write their
guesses about what words go into each blank BEFORE they listen to the CD. Once they have written in their
guesses, play the CD so the students can check if their guesses were correct or not.
8. Act It Out!
This section is a student-student dictation activity. There are also additional questions to answer using
information from the dictation. This activity is at the back of the book.
9. Try It Out!
This section provides a speaking activity done in pairs or groups, or class melee style. It gives students an
opportunity to try out the conversation on their own. Encourage students to use some classroom English such
as Pardon me. Can you speak more slowly? and so on to manage their conversation.
This is a straight-forward, student-student dictation activity. However, it might be a good idea to make sure
students understand what exactly they are supposed to do. You can introduce this activity with a teacher–
student dictation first.
Part 1
1. Have them take out a piece of paper and get them to write down the numbers one to three.
Dictate the following, saying the whole sentence at once, with a natural but relaxed pace:
1. How do you do?
2. Nice to meet you.
3. Are you in the art class?
2. Repeat as necessary. Check that they’ve got the idea and understand what they are supposed to do.
3. Have them work in pairs and do the dictation as per the instructions in the book.
4. Have students check their answers at the end and make sure spelling is correct.
Part 2
1. Have them do the exercise.
2. Let them check their answers in pairs before you give them the correct answer.
There are two listening materials in each clinic. Are they the same?
No, they are different and have different aims. Here’s how:
First Listening
This is always in the form of a set of three single sentences (or two sets of simple dialogues). It is a formal
language presentation of the spoken feature. In the sentences (or dialogues), students hear the feature being
used. Let’s take Book 1: Unit 6 (Mixed Sounds) as our example:
In the sentences, the places underlined are where students will hear examples of Mixed sounds. Their task
here, and in fact every first listening of this section is simply to notice the feature being used. That is all they
need to do. Of course, there are other features of natural speech going on, but the idea here is to present them
one at a time; a little and often.
Second Listening
The second listening in this section is slightly different from the first listening. It takes the form of one
conversation, not single sentences. In this second listening, students are asked to listen to the conversation
and fill in the missing words. The conversation contains places where the speech feature may or may not be
present and this is an important difference from the first listening.
First Listening
1. Tell students the name of the feature (as given in the unit).
2. Have students read the example.
3. Put the example on the board and then play the example on the CD.
4. Point out to students what is happening in the example and then play the example again.
5. Tell students to read the sentences (or dialogues). Give them a minute or so to do this. At this point,
the students will probably start making guesses as to where the feature is likely to turn up.
6. Tell students that you are going to play the CD and that you want them to identify places in the
sentences where they hear the feature being presented.
7. Students do the listening exercise. Let them check their answers with another student. This is important
since different students will pick up different things.
8. Play the CD again. Have students check again.
9. Put the sentences up on the board (or prepare an OHP or PowerPoint if you have time). Have some
of the students tell you their answers and mark them on the board.
10. Play the CD again and check that the right answers are there. NB: If the class as a whole miss a couple
of examples, that's okay. As long as there are some examples on the board, that's all you really need
at this stage.
11. Then put students in pairs and have them practice the sentences. Don't expect or demand too much
accurate production. The point of this is simply to help students begin to internalize what they have
been learning. Let them do this as their own pace. Don’t do a big whole-class drill or anything. Keep it
very low-key.
Second Listening
1. Tell students that you are going to play the CD and that you want them to fill in the missing words to
complete the conversation.
2. Have students read the conversation.
3. Before playing the CD, remind students that they may or may not hear the feature.
4. Students do the listening exercise. Let them check their answers with another student.
5. Put the conversation up on the board (or on an OHP if you have time) and have some of the students
tell you their answers.
6. Play the CD again and put the correct answer up on the board. Play the CD again as a confirmation
listening.
7. Then put the students in pairs and have them practice the conversation, listening to and monitoring
one another. Don’t expect or demand too much accurate production.
By approaching the two parts of listening exercises in this fashion, your students should get used to naturally
spoken English much quicker.
1. Let's Start!
2. Conversation Flow
บทเรียนส่วนนี้เป็นการให้นักเรียนอ่านบทสนทนาแล้วเรียงลำดับข้อความในบทสนทนาใหม่ให้ถูกต้อง บทสนทนาแต่ละบท
จะนำวลีบางวลีที่สัมพันธ์กับหัวข้อของหน่วยการเรียนมาเป็นเนื้อหาในบทสนทนา เพื่อให้นักเรียนเข้าใจการนำภาษามาใช้ในบริบทต่างๆ
4. Let's Listen!
เป็นการทำกิจกรรมการฟังครั้งแรกจากสื่อหลักสำหรับฟัง โดยทั่วๆ ไปแล้วกิจกรรมการฟังครั้งแรกนี้จะเป็นการตอบคำถาม
เกี่ยวกับใจความสำคัญของเรื่อง ซึ่งจะตอบได้ก็ต้องฟังเรื่องราวทั้งหมดก่อน 1 ครั้ง เพื่อจับใจความสำคัญของเรื่อง
5. Listen Again
เป็นการฟังครั้งที่ 2 จากสื่อหลัก นักเรียนจำเป็นต้องฟังอย่างตั้งใจมากขึ้นเพื่อจับใจความที่เป็นรายละเอียดเฉพาะเจาะจง
ของเรื่อง
6. Listening Clinic
*อ่านในส่วนที่ชื่อ “How to Teach Listening Clinics” เพื่อหาข้อมูลเพิ่มเติม
7. Focus on Patterns
Teacher’s Notes for TOP-UP Listening & Speaking 1 9
8. Act It Out!
9. Try It Out!
Pardon me.
Can you speak more slowly?
1) How do you do?
2) Nice to meet you.
3) Are you in the art class?
(Mixed Sounds)
เท่านั้น คือ เสียงที่ผสมข้ามคำดังตัวอย่างนี้
“Would you”
เมื่อเป็นคำพูดที่พูดอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติของภาษาพูดจะออกเสียงผสมกันเป็น
“Woujew”

Unit 1
Lesson Lead-In l Begin the lesson with The Name Game. Put students in a circle and have them
(Optional) throw a ball to each other. As they do so, they must say their name. e.g.: “(I’m)
นำเข้าสู่บทเรียน Kenji”. He throws to another student. “(I’m) Naomi”. She throws to another student.
(เลือกใช้ตามต้องการ) NB: Ask for first name only. When the students have been doing this for a couple
of minutes, tell them to stop. Then they have to throw the ball again. This time
however, they must throw to a student whose name they can remember. E.g.:
“(You’re) Naomi”, says Kenji and throws the ball to her. “(You’re) Sayaka”, says
Naomi and throws to her and so on.
NB: Invariably, there will be students in the circle who nobody can remember. If
this happens, step into the circle yourself and say, “Sorry I can’t remember who
you are.” Get the student to give you their name and repeat it yourself, then throw
to him/her.
NB: a) for large classes, have students do this in two or three circles. Ideally you
want no more than 15 students in the circle. b) if you can’t get hold of a ball, then
crumple up a piece of paper. It works almost as well.
Sorry I can’t remember
who you are.”

sentence stress for the students. Clap out the prominent words.
As per the instructions in the book.
l
IMPORTANT: Tell students that you do not expect them to catch everything. Have
students check their answers in pairs and then play the recording again if you want
to.
Note: The importance of stress is in the link between non-stressed words and weak
vowels. The non-stressed words are usually not content or meaning words, so they
are often weak.
Extension: You could go back to Let's Start! section at this point and have them
decide what the important words are in the sentences and mark the stressed words,
then practice the greeting expressions again.

Part Two: Walk around the class. Introduce yourself to some of the other guests. Find out
some information. Ask your partner “How do you know Elaine?” You can finish your
conversation by saying, “It was nice meeting you.”
Part Three: Now work with a partner. Talk about some of the people you met.
8. Act It Out! Before doing this exercise, read the introductory notes on pages 5 to 12.
ก่อนการทำแบบฝึกหัดนี้ ให้อ่านคำแนะนำในหน้า 5-12
l As per the instructions in the book.
l ปฏิบัติตามคำสั่ง/คำชี้แจงในหนังสือเรียน
NB: 1. This is a straight-forward pairwork dictation exercise. Remind your
students about some confirmation questions they can use, for example
“How do you spell that?” or “Could you repeat that?” You may
need to put these types of questions on the board.
2. Pronunciation may be an issue. Correct as you feel necessary.
ข้อสังเกต: 1. แบบฝึกหัดนี้เป็นกิจกรรมเขียนตามคำบอกโดยทำเป็นคู่ ย้ำให้นักเรียนทราบเกี่ยวกับการใช้
คำถามเมื่อสงสัย เช่น “How do you spell that?” หรือ “Could you repeat that?”
ครูอาจจะเขียนประโยคข้อความ 2 ประโยคนี้บนกระดานดำ
2. การพูดออกเสียงที่ถูกต้องเป็นจุดประสงค์หลักของแบบฝึกนี้ ครูควรแก้ไขการพูดของนักเรียน
ให้ถูกต้องตามความจำเป็น
9. Try It Out! As per the instructions in the book. Monitor students fairly carefully since they may

l
ต้องการความช่วยเหลือด้านคำศัพท์จากครู
NB: Students may want to assume a foreign nationality for this activity. Have some
foreign names, cities and occupations prepared just in case.
Feedback: At the end of the party role-play, put students in pairs and have them
tell each other about some of the people they met. You could put up explicit
questions on the board to guide them. For example: How many men/women did
you meet? Who had the most interesting job? Who has known Elaine the longest?
and so on.

NOTE: The clearest sounds are the “content” words- i.e. the words that carry the
meaning of a sentence (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) and not the smaller
words. For example, in the question “What do you mean?” the clearest words are
“What” and “mean.” The function words often have weak vowels.
ข้อสังเกต: คำที่ออกเสียงชัดเจนที่สุดจะเป็น “คำเนื้อหา” ที่มีความหมายในประโยค (เช่น คำนาม, กริยา,
คุณศัพท์, กริยาวิเศษ) ไม่ใช่คำที่แสดงหน้าที่ทางไวยากรณ์ที่ไม่มีความหมาย เช่น ประโยค What do you

(Optional) print it to hand out to students. If you print it, ask them not to write on it. You can
collect and reuse the question with another class.
Ask the following question:
l
Question: A man has two girlfriends. Each lives several stations away on
different train lines. Both trains run equally often, every 10 minutes. Both
trains stop on the same platform. The man gets up every Saturday
morning at a random time. He goes to the station and takes the first train
to come and goes to see the girlfriend who lives there. He doesn’t do
anything to affect which train he will take. But he doesn’t see both women
equally. He sees one girlfriend two out of ten times and the other girlfriend
eight out of ten times. Why does this happen?
Answer: The trains run at the same frequency, but not at equally spaced intervals.
One train runs (for example) at five minutes past the hour and the other at seven
minutes past the hour. He only takes the second one if he arrives in the short
two-minute gap between the two trains.
