1.0 INTRODUCTION:

1.0.1 PRINCIPLESOF CORROSIONAND CATHODIC PROTECTION:

Metallic corrosion is an electro:chemical reaction in which the metal combines

with a non metal, such as oxygen, to form a metal oxide or other compound.
This dependsupon the nature ofthe environment.

Different metals have different tendencies to corrode, temed activity or

potential. These potentials can be tabulated and form the electro-chemical
series.

A more practical approachis the determinationof the tendency of certain metals

to coEode in a particular electrollte, such as sea water. This is termed the
galvanic seriesof which the following table is an abridged form.

Active or Anodic

Magnesium
' Zinc

Noble or Cathodic

Note Sonie metals and alloys have two positions in the series, markedActive
and Passive; the active position is equivalent to the position if corrosion is
occurring and approachesthe electro-chemicalseriesposition for the material.
The passive position relates to a non-corroding situation where the material is
protectedby a self forming surfacefilm. For example, type 316 stainlesssteelin
sea water is more likely to be passive thzrntype 304 and is therefore generally
preferred for immersed marine applications.

I If two metalsare placedin an electrolyte(e.9.seawater or dampsoil) and are in

I direct electrical contact,a current will pass though the electrolytefrom the
more active metal onto the least active metal. The least active metal doesnot
corrode and is termed the cathode. The more active metal, the anode, passes

t into solutionandthe flow of electricalcunent increases. This is a metal ion and

electrontransferprocessi.e., it corrodes.

This simplecell may be represented

as:

I Figure 1.1- SimpleConosionCell

l The Anodic and cathodicareasin a corrosioncell may be due to the electrical

contact of two dissimilar metals, termed galvanic corrosion Anodic and
cathodic areasmay be formed on a single metal surface as micro-cells for

I instanceby rain drops on uncoatedsteel.Altematively, they may be close but

discretecells found whenacceleratedcorrosionoccursat uncoatedAnodic areas
on a generallycoatedcathodic structure. In addition there are long line type

l cells that occur on pipelinesthat passthough aggressivelow resistivity soils.

Thesesectionsform Anodic areasand corrodein preferenCe

to cathodicareasin

I Large currents can occur at small Anodic areasand lead to rapid corosion of
marine structuressuch as ship's intemal tanks, extemal hull plates, sheetsteel
piling in harboursand tubular structurescommon in jetties and petrochemical

I drilling andproductionplatforms.

Cathodic Protection is a syslem of preventing corrosion byforcing all surfaces

ofa structure to be cathodesby providing external aiodes.

As describedabove,a galvanicconosioncell occurswhen dissimilarmetalsare

in contact with each other within an electrolyte.Care should be taken in the
constructionof structuresthat will be buried or immersedin an electrolyteto
ensurea galvaniccell is not created.

Typical examplesofgalvanic cells are:

a) Steelor cast iron water boxesin contactwith non ferrous(often copper

based) tube plates in condenserwater boxes in ships or generating
plant. Rapid corrosionof the fenous water box occurscloseto the tube
plate.

b) Brass or bronze valves fitted to immersed steel buoyancy tanks or

flooding chamberson marine petrochemicalstructures.Accelerated
corrosionofthe steeloccursnearthe valve.

c) The connection of steel pipes into an otherwise cast iron system.

Acceleratedcorrosionof the steeloccursnearthe castiron sections.

Sacrificial anode cathodic protection achieves corrosion prevention on a

particular structure or component by forming a galvanic cell where an
additionalanodeof zinc, magnesiumor aluminiumconodesin preferenceto the
structure.The galvaniccorrosioncurrent(seesimplecell before)availablefrom
this anode/ electrolyte/ structurecombinationshouldbe sufficientto overcome
the local surfacecorrosioncurrentson the structureuntil no currentflows from
Anodic areasof the struchfe i.e the structure is entirely cathodic or under
completecathodicprotection.

The potential,or measureofactivity, betweenthe structureandthe electrolyteis

a relatively easily measuredindication of whether the structureis Anodic or
cathodic. For steel under normal non anaerobicconditions it can be shown
theoretically,and is acceptedpractically,that a steel/electrol)tepotential more
negativethan -0.85 volts measuredagainst,astandardcopper/coppersulphate
electrodeindicatesthat cathodicprotectionis achieved. This is equivalentto -
0.80 volts measuredagainstsilver / silver chloride elechodeand + 0.24 volts
againsta zinc electrodeas indicatedin figure 1.3.

SACRIFICIAL ANODE CATHODIC PROTECTION:

As indicated previously, a metal can be made cathodic by electrically

connecting it to a more Anodic metal within the electrolyte. The most
commonly usedAnodic metals are alloys of aluminium, zinc and magnesium.
Anodes of these metals corrode preferentially;the corrosion current of the
anode achieving cathodic protection of the structure to which they are
connected. The anodesdeteriorateas an essentialpart oftheir function andthey
arethereforetermedsacrificial.

CURRENT CATHODIC PROTECTION:

r A metal also can be made cathodic by electrically connectingit to another

metallic componentin the sameelectrolytethrougha sourceof direct electdc

I A sourceof direct current is required, this is generallyobtainedfrom mains

power units that contain a transformerand rectifier. The magnitudeof this
currentmay be automaticallycontrolledin responseto a continuousmonitor of

t the cathode / electrolyte potential or may be manually controlled after

intermittentmeasurement.

t The impressedcunent anodematerial is ideally non-consumedby the passage

of cunent flom it into the electrolyte, in practice the materials used are a
compromisebetweenthis ideal and the cost and physicalpropertiesofavailable

t
materials.Impressedcurrentanodesare made from graphite, silicon iron, lead
alloys some with platinum bi-electrodes,platinisedtitanium or more exotic
combinationssuchas platinumclad niobium. The selectionof the correctanode
material is critical in the formulation of an effective and economiccathodic

I protectionscheme.

Generally, for a given current demand, less impressed current anodes than
sacrificial anodes are required for protection, as high anode currents are
feasible. Impressed current systems of cathodic protection are more
sophisticatedin designthan sacrificialsystems.

2.2.0 MARINE IMPRESSEDCURRENT SYSTEM:

The.C-Shield Marine Impressed Current System comprises the following

components,as illustratedin figure 1.4.

2.2.1 ImpressedCurrentAnodes

The function of the anode is to conduct the d.c. protective current into the sea
water. C-Shield anodeshave been designedto perform this function whilst
maintaining a low electrical resistance contact with the sea water. Standard
surface mounted anodesare available with from 50 to 300 Ampere ratings. For
forward mounted systems and for special applications 50 and 75 Ampere
recessedanodesare available.

Materialsnow usedby C-Shieldfor Anodeshave now gone beyond lead alloy

with specialistcoatedtitanium basedAnodesnow available.All C-Shieldanode
designsutilise a tough, chlorineresistant, but slightly flexible plasticcarrier.

I The use of a 24 volt systemreducesthe numberand length of the anodesfrom

that required with a 12 volt system.The increasedanode/seawater resistance
I resultingfrom this decreasein anodesizeis overcomeby the additionalvoltage'
Recommended cablesizesfor variousrun lengthsare tabulatedin section3'5'

I The potentialof the hull steelto the seawater is unaffectedby this increasein
driving voltage, as the resistive effects are local to the anode and the hulUsea
potential is a function of the cunent flow, the sea water and the coating

I condition,not the driving voltage.

The electrical connections to the active surface are made at the back of the
anode and are fully encapsulated and protected by the hull penetration'
I Recessedanodes of essentially similar construction are provided for bow
sectionapplications.

I
I ImpressedCurrentReferenceElectrodes.

I The high purity, high stability, zinc referenceelectrodesare designedto give a

stable ;ef;rence against which the hulVsea potentials can be measuredand a
small current flow that is used in the closed loop circuit to maintain the pre-set

t levels of protection.

The construction and the quantity of zinc employed within the electrodes are
such that a minimum life of fifteen years is available without maintenanceor

3.0 INSTALLATION OF EQTJIPMENT:

3.0.01 Description:

The C-Shield IrnpressedCurrent System consists of anodesand electrodes

for installation tfuough the hull using penetration and cofferdam
arrangements, a power supply unit for location intemally and bonding
arrangementsfor appendagessuch as propeller and rudder. The system uses
identical cofferdams for both surfacemount linear and recessedanodes. The
cofferdams for the referenceelectrodesare longer than those for the anodes
so that there is a necessity to differentiate between cofferdams before
starting assembly.

3.0.02 Locationsfor componentsare shownon the C-Shielddrawingssuppliedfor

the particular vessel, but are normally subject to final confirmation between
the C-Shield engineeron site and the yard./owner.

3.0.03 It is very important that the installation instructions given are followed. The
biggest cause of fuh.re problems found with the running of impressed
curreqt systemsis inconect installation. Should any problems occur during
installation of this system or should any instruction appear unclear please
contact Cathelco for advice.

3.0.04 It is recommendedpractice that routine sewice by Cathelco should be

carried out as recommendedby the classification body for the vessel which
in some instancesis 2 yearly.

The power output is shut down to zero and the potential

from each of the systemelectrodesis measured. Output
current is the ramped to 50%oof system capacity over a 5
secondperiod. At the start (0A) and at every I second
interval the potentialfrom eachof the systemelectrodesis
measured. During this test the output voltage requiredto
deliver the currentis also monitored. If the output voltage
at 50o%current output exceeds20V, then the system is
deemedto be operatingin non-standardseawatei and the
results of the test are ignored, with the test repeatedafter a
further 8 hour period. Any electrode that retums a
potential of less than 100mV at zero current output and
doesalter its potentialby at least30mV when 50 % output
is achievedis deemedto havefailed.

Signals from electrodesthat have not passedthe test are

suspendedfrom the control function for the next 8 hour
period and an alarm generated to indicate an electrode
fault. The test is repeatedautomaticallyon all electrodes
(includingthosethat havepreviouslybeensuspended) after
an 8 hour interval.

ROUTINE OPERATING PROCEDURE

The CathelcoMarine impressedCurrentSystemis completelyautomaticwith

little maintenancerequiredand will normally requireno adjustrnentsduring
routineoperationof the vessel. However, carefulattentionon a routine basis
should be given to the following points, by the ships staff to ensurethat the
systemis kept operatingat maximumefficiencyat all times.

5.0.I EVERYDAY:

Checkthat the LCD ofthe PowerSupplyunit display is illuminated,

and that the oN/ALARM LED is lit. If either of theseare incorrect
then refer to the fault finding section.

Recordthe O/P Current & Voltage and the 4 electrodevoltageson

the C-Shieldlog sheetsprovided.Refer to figure 5.1 for an example
of how to completethe log sheet.

NOTES:

1 If,the O/P Currentis setto displayo/othen pressthe 'ENT button

to toggleto Amperes.

2. Pressingeitherthe up or down buttonswill toggle the displayto

readeitherelechodesI & 2 or electrodes3 & 4.

3. If the electrodereadingsappearto be erratic (ie going positive&

negative)then the readingsunit has becomeconfused.Tuming the
unit off then on with the front mounted switch will solve this
problem. This switch also acts as an isolating switch should the
systemneedto be tumed off.

5.0.2 EVERYWEEK:

Once weekly the slipring shouldbe checkedfor cleanliness, for wear

on the brushesand to confirm that the brushesboth move freely in
their holdersand are held firmly onto the slipring by the brushholder
spring.Check the rudder stock bondingcable for any fraying of the
conductorat the connectionooints.

5.0.3 EVERY MONTH:

Eachlog sheethasspacefor a completemonth afterwhich the copies

should be returned to Cathelco, Chesterfield for scrutiny and
comment.

Section5 Revo
P a g e1 o f 3
5.0.4 EVERY3 MONTHS:

Every 3 months switch off the equipment isolate the power

externallyto the unit removethe coversand inspectthe power supply
unit internally for signs of loose wires or other visual defects. The
power supply unit is, under normal operation, fan cooled, and
dependson free circulation of cooling air through the vents to
maintain safe working temperatureof components. Check that the
ventilation grilles in the sidesand top are not obstructedin anyway.
Clean any dust and dirt from the unit paying particular attentionto
the Coolingfan.

Replaceall coversprovidepower and operatethe mainsswitch to the

On oositionand shutthe front door.

5.0.5 30 DAYS PRIORTO DRY-DOCKING:

One month before the dry docking ensurethat daily log sheetshave
been maintained and forwarded to Cathelco for assessmentwith
informationthat dry docking is expected. This will ensurethat any
necessarysparescan be despatchedin good time. Continueto log
the systemreadingsup to the time the vesselentersthe dry dock. It
is advised that an Engineer from Cathelco (Chesterfield) be in
attendanceduring drydocking to check and service the C-Shield
System.

5.0.6 FRESHWATEROPERATION:

At times when the vesselentersa river estuarywherethe water may

be fresh or brackishthe effect will be to limit the spreadof cunent
from the anodesbecauseof the much higher electricalresistivity of
water.Normally this will causethe automaticoontrolto increasethe
transformerrectifier output voltageto the maximum but this will be
accompaniedby a very low level currentand the referenceelectrode
potentialsmay indicate under protection. However, this has been
taken care of by our computer and is explained in a separate
paragraphin 6.1 The system will return the hull to the optimum
orotectivelevel assoonas the vesselretumsto the seawater.

5.0.7 PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

It is recommendedpracticethat routine serviceby Cathelcoshould

be carried out as recommendedby the classificationbody for the
vesselwhich in someinstancesis 2 yearlv.
