1. Given g, X, and EX. To determine IA and EA:

a. Determine amperes per inch (IA/D)(0.3/EX) corresponding to g and X.
b. Obtain IA by multiplying (IA/D)(0.3/EX) by D and EX/0.3.
c. Obtain EA by multiplying corresponding value of EA/EX by EX.
2. Given g, EA, and EX. To determine X and IA:
a. Calculate voltage ratio EA/EX.
b. Read X directly below intersection of g and EA/EX curves.
c. Obtain IA by multiplying corresponding Amperes per inch (IA/D)(0.3/EX) by D and EX/0.3.
3. Given IA, X, and EX. To determine g:
a. Calculate amperes per inch (IA/D)(0.3/EX).
b. Obtain g corresponding to X and amperes per inch from chart (by interpolation).
4. Apply correction factors, if required. (See Figure 1200-8)
Examples
1. 10.75-in. O.D. x 0.25-in. wall API-5LX Grade X42 pipe; g = 100; current drained at one end of infinite line.
Determine current required to protect 30,000-ft long section of line (EX = 0.3).
From Chart II, (IA/D)(0.3/EX) = 0.73.
Current required = IA = 0.73 x 10.75 = 7.8 A.
2. 8.625-in. O.D. x 0.20-in. wall API-5LX Grade X52 pipe; g = 100. Determine distance from drain point that can
be protected with EA = 1.5 V and EX = 0.3 V (EA/EX = 5) and current required.
From Chart II, L = 29.5 and (IA/D)(0.3/EX) = 0.72 for equivalent line.
From Chart A, Figure 1200-8, correction factor F = 0.84 (for average API-5LX Grade X52 pipe).
Distance on actual line = 29,500 x 0.84 = 25,000 ft in each direction from drain point.
Current for actual line = 0.72 x 8.625 x 0.84 = 5.2 A from each direction.
3. 6.625-in. O.D. pipe; Rs = 0.011 ohms/1000 ft (by calibration); 4.5 amperes drained at one end of infinite line
changes potential at a point 75,000 ft from drain point by 0.47 V (IA = 4.5, X = 75, EX = 0.47). Determine
coating conductivity.
RsD = 0.011 x 6.625 = 0.073
From Chart B, Figure 1200-8, correction factor F = 1.23.
Equivalent X = 75/1.23 = 61; equivalent IA = 4.5/1.23 = 3.7.
Equivalent (IA/D)(0.3/EX) = (3.7/6.625)(0.3/0.47) = 0.36 (use actual EX = 0.47).
From Chart II, g = 24 micromhos/ft2 [for X = 61 (IA/D)(0.3/ EX) = 0.36].
