7. Adverbs of Frequency

Skill: The student recognizes the adverbs that indicate the rhythm of an action (always,
never, often, eleven today).

Grammar focus

We use some adverbs to describe how frequently we do an activity. These are called
adverbs of frequency and include:

Frequency Adverb of Frequency Example Sentence

100% always I always eat before 11pm

90% usually I usually have fruit for breakfast..

80% normally / generally I normally go to the kitchen in the morning.

70% often / frequently I often cook Cesar salad

50% sometimes I sometimes buy cake in my wife's birthday.

30% occasionally I occasionally eat junk food.

10% seldom I seldom eat meat.

5% hardly ever / rarely I hardly ever drink alcohol.

0% never I never eat sea food.

The Position of The Adverb in A Sentence

An adverb of frequency goes before a main verb (Except with To Be).

An adverb of frequency goes after the verb to be.

Subject + adverb + main verb

I always remember to do my homework.

He normally gets good marks in exams.

75
ENGLISH I

Subject + auxiliary + adverb + main verb

Subject + to Be + Adverb
She can sometimes beat me in a race.
They are never pleased to see me.
I would hardly ever be unkind to someone.
She isn't usually bad tempered.
They might never see each other again.

They could occasionally be heard laughing.

When we use an auxiliary verb (have, will, must, might, could, would, can, etc.), the adverb is
placed between the auxiliary and the main verb.

 We can also use the following adverbs at the start of a sentence:

 Usually, normally, often, frequently, sometimes, occasionally
 Occasionally, I like to play soccer with my friends.
 BUT we cannot use the following at the beginning of a sentence:
 Always, seldom, rarely, hardly, ever, never.

Exercises

Incorporate the adverb of frequency among parenthesis. In some cases you will have to
make some changes in the initial sentence.

1. Ron and Harry play quidditch in the evenings (usually)

2. Cristiano Ronaldo has a cup of milk in the morning. (always)

3. Where do you buy your red shoes? (usually)

1. THE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE TENSE

OPENING ACTIVITY
What do you think the present progressive, present continues or
progressive tense are? In pairs check the next page
http://www.ejerciciodeingles.com/forma-uso-present-progressive/ and write in your notebook what you understand about
this topic.

Grammar focus
Present progressive tense is used to express an activity that is going on at the moment of
speaking.
A verb, to form a progressive tense, has always the ending –ing. In most cases, it is enough to
place –ing at the end of the verb. Sometimes it’s necessary to do other changes to the verb. It’s
easy to spell words ending in –ing correctly — there are just 4 rules!

1.1. Verbs add – ing

+ ing
For most verbs, just add –ing to the base form of the verb.

sleep – sleeping talk – talking

– e + ing
If the base form ends in a single -e, drop the -e and add –ing.

live – living write – writing

iey + ing
If the base form ends in –ie, change the –ie to –y and add –ing.

die – dying tie – tying

93
ENGLISH I

x2 + ing
If the last 3 letters of the base form are consonant-vowel-consonant
and the stress is on the final (or only) syllable, double the final
consonant and add –ing.

split – splitting stop – stopping

admit – admitting begin – beginning

(Compare stress not on final syllable: listen – listening)

Do not double the final consonants -x, -w, or –y.

fix – fixing plow – plowing

obey – obeying

1.3. DYNAMIC AND STATIVE VERBS

OPENING

1.- Put the verbs in the table according to what they represent,
an activity or state

Need run speak like understand go talk wish believe

promise

Activity State

Grammar focus

First, we will explain the difference between them.

"Dynamic" is an adjective that means something is moving or changing. These verbs

describe an action instead of a state; are also called "action verbs". Some of them are:
eat, walk, learn, talk, run, write, sleep and go. All the dynamic verbs can be used in the
progressive form.
Example: "Raul is chasing the bus."

"Stative" is an adjective that describes something as having a state or existing. These

verbs describe a state instead of an action; are also called "state verbs". Some
examples of these verbs are: know, love, like, hate, prefer and understand. Stative verbs

99
ENGLISH I

are not use in progressive form, but when using them it is understood that the action is
occurring at the moment
Example: “Mario wants some ice-cream. "

Some verbs that can be dynamic or stative depending on their meaning and the context
of the sentence, for example the verbs think, have and smell
Example: "I think it's wrong to drink beer."

In this sentence, think is a static verb, because is “an opinion" and can´t be used in a
progressive in this situation …. But
"I'm thinking about buying a beer."
In this sentence, thinking is “describing a process or an action”. So here we use the
progressive form.

2. PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE VS PRESENT PROGRESSIVE TENSE

GRAMMAR FOCUS

We use the Present Simple:

1) to make the reference to situations that frequently repeated:
Adverb of frequency (never, hardly ever, sometimes, often, usually, always, on (Mondays), every
(Monday))
Example: Nadal always plays tennis on Roland Garros.

2) When is a routine situation (the things that we make: job, studies, etc.)
Example: I am at university. I study Robotic.

We use the Present Progressive:

1) For situations that happen in the moment in which we speak (for example, situations that
we can see or hear). For this reason this form is usually accompanied by adverbs of time
like now or at the moment.
Example: Ariana is doing her homework now.

2) To speak of temporary situations. These situations are longer in a period of limited time.
It is indicated by adverbs of time (this week/month/year, for (six weeks), currently,
nowadays etc.)
Example: Messi lives in Barcelona but this week, he is playing soccer in Brazil.
