Earth’s atmosphere stops most types of EM Radiation
from space reaching the Earth’s surface. This illustration
shows how far different EM Waves can go. Only portions
of UV, Visible Light and Radiowave reach the surface.
- Amplitude Modulation
- 540 to 1600 kHz
AM
- susceptible to noise
- TV Video
- Frequency Modulation
- 88 to 108 MHz
FM
- Used by TV Broadcasting Stations
- TV Audio

APPLICATION Radio communications, TV Broadcasting, wireless networks

DANGERS Not hazardous, radiation burns
ADVANTAGE Ease of communication , cheaper transmissions
DISADVANTAGE “insecure communication” = susceptible to weather effect
EHF - Extreme high frequency
- Radio Astronomy,Big Bang Map
SHF - Super High Frequency
- Terresrial data (wifi, oven, etc.)
UHF - Ultra High Frequency
- Broadcasting, walkie-talkie, etc.

APPLICATION Satellite microwave (1st image) , terrestrial microwave (2nd image), weather news
DANGERS Not hazardous, painful burns
ADVANTAGE Large communication coverage, capable to overseas communication
DISADVANTAGE High investment cost to avoid failures = high maintenance
Is microwave an instrument
(that emits microwaves)?
Is microwave an instrument
(that emits microwaves)?
Is microwave an instrument
(that emits microwaves)?

Yes! Microwave oven produces

Electromagnetic Waves, a magnet inside the
oven generates it, then travels to the food
compartment, the microwaves then make the
food molecules to vibrate. The vibration
produces heat, then later on cooks the food.
FAR INFRARED (FIR)
- Thermal : sunlight, fire, oven
toaster etc.

NEAR INFRARED (NIR)

- TV Remote

APPLICATION TV Remotes, Thermal Imaging, Night Vision

DANGERS Felt as heat, skin burns, eye damage
ADVANTAGE Contributes to infrared astronomy, low-power consumption and cost
DISADVANTAGE “phone’s outdated communication”, cannot penetrate obstacles (walls, ceilings, etc.)
APPLICATION Artificial lights, seeing, blu-ray disk
DANGERS Eye damage
ADVANTAGE Cheaper and can be used efficiently
DISADVANTAGE Cannot penetrate opaque objects

• why most food chains are in red,
orange and yellow in color?
- Red, orange and yellow has the longest
wavelengths in the EM Spectrum thus, we can see
those colors even were far.

The colors red, orange and yellow is mostly associated with

foods because these colors stimulates our appetite and
makes us feel hungry.

• why firetrucks are red?
- Historically, it has been the most popular shade for fire
departments to use on their vehicles.

• It's said to be both visible - a big plus when people have to

quickly spot and move aside for a large, fast fire truck - and
traditional.

• But nowadays, there’s a lot of studies and applications that fire

trucks and other emergency vehicles should be painted in
somehow near yellow colors or lime-green, because that color
has the most emission of white light in Visible Light Spectrum. Beat the time!

• why printers have cyan, magenta and yellow
are used in printers instead of red, yellow and
blue?
- RGB is “additive” and uses red, green, and blue to form the color spectrum.
White light is produced by combination of these colors.
- Cyan, magenta and yellow is “subtractive” and uses yellow, cyan (blue),
magenta (red) because it will be layered on a white paper, a surface that does
not emit light. In short…CMY can be an alternative for RGB!
IF RYB is Primary Colors of Light, CMY is the Primary Colors in Pigments!

• why most of babies hate yellow color?

- Although red has the longest wavelength, Yellow is the first one our eyes
see. Yellow creates feelings of frustration and anger. While it is
considered a cheerful color, people are more likely to lose their tempers
in yellow rooms and babies tend to cry more in yellow rooms.

The Symphony of
Science is a music
project created
by Washington-based
Electronic-musician
John D. Boswell under
the name of Melody
Sheep.
A musical celebration of
light and how it tells the
story of our universe.
Featuring Brian Cox, an
English Physicist and
former musician who
serves as Professor at
University of
Manchester.

“ When you look at a star in the distance, you are actually traveling through time
because in the present moment, that star is and might actually be dead
and it took many years for the light to reach our eyes...
We’re definitely in future looking at the past, the story of the universe is our story.”
