“The Impact of COVID-19 in Mental Health Struggles Towards Young Minds”

The articles I browsed on the internet share the awareness of how much mental issues can have an effect
towards young minds, how it could destroy a child’s own self-identity even from an early age. Especially towards
young minds that have been locked inside of their houses, restricted from going outside or having a proper
education all because of COVID-19. Children who are forced to listen to restrictions for their well-being but are
unable to seek treatment for their mental health can be burdened with mental health issues due to the lack of
substantial investment to acknowledge this crisis. According to the article from UNICEF (2021), during the
pandemic, researchers conducted a survey about people ranging from 15 to 24 years old and said they often feel
depressed and experience loneliness or anxiety.

Another article that I came across talked about the effects of lockdowns to class suspensions, or regular
routines being disrupted and the minimized social support they need from their own peers can have a significant
impact towards a child’s mindset (Malolos et al., 2021). Particularly, it is a major issue for students who are living in
lower socioeconomic status and encounter more mental stress because of the inability to afford necessary gadgets
for their online modality and more importantly, internet access (Alibudbud, 2021). From my own perspective, just
thinking how it was so difficult to shift from the face-to-face classes to online classes where students were not used
to that new reality, it increased the burden of the students’ mental well-being. I can relate to that experience when
there was an abrupt announcement that all school levels were suspended and how we thought it would just be
weeks turned into months, now it went for years. Being locked inside and living with mental health concerns, unable
to open up towards cramped households and how hard it is to reach out to their own communities might face
unfortunate circumstances, or worse, end in suicide.

Due to the pandemic, many are concerned about the development of their children since the outside world is
a major factor for a child’s progress of development as stated from an article made by Mendoza (2022). This
generation of children in the Philippines are either confined in their houses, or kids who grew up in the streets where
they are more vulnerable and prone to the virus. Adding to the fact that street kids must live in constant fear for
their future and well-being, which causes major mental health issues. It commonly involves poverty, limited access
to necessary services, and unable to get the education they needed, all of which can influence a child's growth and
fuel the trauma from being homeless that they will take as they get older.

After all the struggles one faces when it comes to their mental state, there comes the movements, the people
who do something about it, as simple as raising awareness about mental issues, and acknowledging the crisis that
children to adolescents seriously experience. It is enough to feel seen and know that they are aware of your
situation, getting the help we need is enough.
