A. Preparatory
Activities Pinoy Henyo: Word Guessing. Place the word on the forehead and let a
 Review partner guess the word.

SOLID LIQUID GAS MATTER

FOR SOLID
- retains a fixed volume and shape
-rigid - particles locked into place
- does not flow easily

FOR LIQUID
- assumes the shape of the part of the container which it occupies
- particles can move/slide past one another

B. Motivation Would you like to eat halo-halo? (Ans: Yes) What are the ingredients in

C. Activity Activity 1.1 Which is a mixture?


Instructions:
1. Look at the two sets of fruits.

Apples A Apples B

2. Describe the apples in Apples A and in Apples B.

(Ans: In Apples A, apples are in the same color and size. In Apples B, apples are
not the same in size and color.

Questions:
1. Which group of apple has the same size and color? (Ans: A)
2. Which group of apples doesn’t have the same size and color?

3. Which group is called a mixture of apples? Why?
(Apples B. Because apples are in different sizes and colors. While
in Apples A, the apples are in the same size and color).
Activity 1.2 Mix it Up

Materials:
A pitcher with 1 liter of water, 1 sachet of powdered orange juice, 1/2
cup pulp of apple and ½ cup pulp of water melon (fruit pulp cut into
cubes)

Procedure:
1. Place 1 liter of water in a pitcher.
2. Pour the sachet of powdered orange juice into the pitcher. Stir.
Observe the mixture of water and powdered orange juice. Record
your observation.

Questions:
Can you still see the powdered orange juice? (Ans: No. It
disappeared). What happens to the powdered juice?(Ans: It

3. Share your drinks with your group mates. Be careful in drinking it.

 How does the mixture taste? (Ans: It has a taste of an orange)


 What does it mean?(Ans: it means that the powdered orange
juice is in water
 Why is it that you cannot see it anymore?(Ans: it dissolves in
water).

4. Place slowly the pulp of mango and melon into the mixture of
orange juice.
5. Mix thoroughly by stirring. Then, observe the ingredients of the
juice.

D. Analysis Let each group present their output. Discuss their answers.

What is mixture? (Ans: a combination of two or more substance)
 What are the characteristics of a mixture?(Ans: Mixtures are not in
a fixed ratio, keep their physical properties, and can be separated
by mechanical means)

E. Abstraction A mixture is a combination of two or more substance where these


substances are not bonded (or joined) to each other and no chemical
reaction occurs between the substances.

In a mixture, the substances that make up the mixture:


 Are not in a fixed ratio
 Keep their physical properties, and
 Can be separated by mechanical means

In your fruit juice, the water and fruits keep their physical properties
even when mixed with water. You can separate the pulps of mango and
melon by picking them using a spoon or through your clean hands.

F. Application Pick up the picture that shows a mixture. Paste it on the board under
a word “Mixture”. Arrange the pictures of non-mixture on the chart.

Materials:
