ENGLISH CATEGORY

GUIDELINES/MECHANICS AND CRITERIA FOR JUDGING

A. STORY TELLING CONTEST


1. The contest is open to all public and private grade 4 - 6 learners in the Division of
City of Naga.
2. Each school is allowed to send only one (1) contestant to the district/cluster level.
Only the first-place winner in the district/cluster level will advance to the division
level competition. The same mechanics shall be applied in the division level.
3. A Contestant may wear his/her uniform or any attire/costume fitted to the story he/she
will tell.
4. Contestants are required to submit their tale or story to be used in the competition to
the contest committee in the respective levels of competition on A4-sized bond paper
using Times Roman (14 pt. font size)
5. Each contestant is given 3 to 5 minutes for the presentation of the story.
6. Time shall officially start when the contestant utters the first word of the presentation.
And a penalty of 1-point deduction every 30 seconds in excess.

On-stage Performance - 40%
(eye contact, gestures, facial expression)
English Proficiency - 40%

B. ORATORICAL CONTEST
1. The contest is open to all public and private Junior high school learners in the
division.
2. The top 2 winners in the district/cluster level competition will advance to the
division level competition.
3. The piece must be original and must be anchored to the tagline of DepEd, re:
“Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa”.
Note: The piece should be unpublished, bears the name and address, and
position/designation of the author.
4. The delivery shall not exceed 7 minutes and must refrain from using slanderous or
libelous statements. Every 10 seconds in excess shall mean 1-point deduction.
5. Contestants are encouraged to wear their school uniform. In the absence of school
uniform, contestants may wear the following:
 Female Contestants – blouse/shirt. overcoat, and
slacks/long skirt
 Male Contestants – collared shirt and slacks
(denim pants are not allowed)
6. Contestants must arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes before the competition for
the drawing of lots.
7. Coaches should submit 4 copies of the contest piece to the committee before the
contest proper.
8. The committee must strictly adhere to the following qualifications in the selection
of the judges:
 Exposed to public speaking; trainings related to speech/public speaking
 English major or related courses.
9. The decision of the board of judges is final and irrevocable

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING:


Choice of Piece (relevance to the theme) - 20%
Delivery (voice projection, diction, & pronunciation) - 20%
Mastery of the Piece - 20%
Interpretation (appropriate vocal variety, mood, rate
& rhythm) - 20%
Platform behavior (movement on stage/blocking) - 10%
Poise, appropriateness of attire and stage presence - 10%

C. EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH COMPETITION


1. The contest is open to public and private Senior High School learners in the
division.
2. The top 2 winners in the district/cluster level competition shall advance to the
division level competition.
3. Contestants are encouraged to wear their school uniform. In the absence of school
uniform, contestants may wear the following:
 Female Contestants – blouse/shirt. overcoat, and
slacks/long skirt
 Male Contestants – collared shirt and slacks
(denim pants are not allowed)
4. The topic shall be given on the spot by the judges.
 The judges shall give topics prior to the start of the competition related
to the theme.
5. Contestants shall be given five (5) minutes to prepare and five (5) minutes to
deliver.
 Contestants are not allowed to use any gadget/props for sound effects.
 A timer accessible to the contestant, judges and audience shall be
provided.
 The contest master is accountable to the sanctification of the
competition.
 There will be a 1-point deduction for every 30-second overtime from
the respective judges’ total score before determining the rank of the
contestants.
6. The style of the delivery shall be conversational, oratorical or a combination of
both.
7. The judges’ decision is final and irrevocable

Delivery (voice projection) - 20%
Pronunciation, Enunciation, Diction - 20%
Stage Presence (eye contact, poise, personality) - 20%
