Lesson 1/Quiz 1
Answer the following:

1. When can you say that a research paper is good?

ANSWER:
I can say that research paper is good if it follows all the characteristics that a
research paper should have. Some important characteristics of a good research are
being rigorous, systematic, controlled, empirical, critical, analytical, objective,
unbiased, logical, valid and verifiable. Thus, it is a good research paper if the
research allows the researcher to establish consistency in the methods used over
time; if it follows an orderly and sequential procedure that leads to the discovery of
truth, solution of a problem, or whatever it aims to be discovered; if all variables
except those that are tested are kept constant (not allowed to change or vary) so that
the changes made on the subjects of the study can be attributed only to the
experimental variable; if a research gives the researcher the opportunity to test the
validity of different assumptions before arriving at any findings; if it has a critical
analysis of all the data used so that there is no error in their interpretation; if all the
findings and conclusions are logically based on empirical data and no effort is made
to alter the results of the research; and it is good if it implies that whatever your
conclusion is, it is correct because it is based on the findings and can be verified by
the researcher itself and others.

2. Explain why research is a process.

ANSWER:
Research is such a vast area that sometimes hard to know where to start, but
it has process. Research is a process because it consists of multiple scientific steps
in collecting, analysing, and interpreting data to answer the questions or problems
identified. Always be mindful that we cannot accomplish research with just a blink of
an eye. In doing a research, it will go through with the process that needs to be done
critically, and carefully. It means, in order to effectively conduct a research, a
researcher must follow series of steps or actions while formulating research problem,
extensive literature review or survey, developing objectives/hypothesis, preparing the
research design determining the sample design, collecting data, analysis of data,
generalization and interpretation, and the preparation of the report or presentation of
the results. So, the process starts with the research problem at first, and then it
advances in the next steps sequentially. Furthermore, it should be noted that the
steps in the research process are interrelated. The problem that has been identified
will determine the objectives, the framework of the study and the rest of the steps.
Also, it should be remembered that even in the early step of the process, the
subsequent activities should be taken into account; failure to do so may result in
some difficulties which may endanger the quality or even the completion of the study.
