LESSON 1 (THE HUMAN BREATHING SYSTEM)

I. WHAT I KNOW / Pre-Assessment: (page 2)
1. D 6. C 11. A
2. A 7. C 12. C
3. A 8. D 13. C
4. D 9. C 14. C
5. B 10.A 15. C

II. WHAT’S NEW / Activity 1 (page 4)

For Observations/Guide Question:
1. Parts & Functions of the Human Respiratory System
a. Nasal passages = A channel for airflow through the nose. The walls of the nasal passages are coated
with respiratory mucous membrane, which contain innumerable tiny hair-like cells that move waves of
mucus toward the throat.
b. Pharynx = Is the part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity, and above the esophagus
and larynx- the tubes going down to the stomach and lungs.
c. Larynx = Commonly called the voice box, is an organ in the top of the neck involved in
breathing, producing sound and protecting the trachea against food aspiration.
d. Trachea = A large membranous tube reinforced by rings of cartilage, extending from the larynx
to the bronchial tubes and conveying air to and from the lungs.
e. Bronchi = Separates trachea into two branches.
f. Pleura = Each of a pair of serous membranes lining the thorax and enveloping the lungs in
human and other mammals.
g. Bronchioles = Are the smaller branches of the airways in the respiratory tract.
h. Alveoli = Are tiny air sacs in your lungs that take up the oxygen you breathe in and keep your
body going.
i. Diaphragm = It plays a major role in breathing, as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax
and so inflates the lungs.

2. The key parts of the human breathing system are the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli.
3. There is a possibility the other organ will fail or will be affected.
4. Nose Nasal passages Trachea bronchi Bronchioles Alveoli

For Generalization:
1. The key parts of the human breathing system are Trachea, Bronchi, Bronchioles and Alveoli
2. From the nose, nasal passages, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli
3. from the nose, nasal passages, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli

LESSON 2 (THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM)

I. WHAT’S NEW? / Activity 2 (pp. 7 – 8)
For Observations/Guide Question:
1. When we inhale oxygen goes out of our body and carbon dioxide goes out of our body when we exhale. Gas
exchange also happens when we inhale and exhale.
2. The blood deliver oxygen, nutrients and chemicals throughout the body.
3. Air first enters your lungs and then into the left part of your heart. It is then by your heart into the
bloodstream, all the way through your body. The heart pumps blood, which transports essential nutrients, oxygen, and
other chemicals to every cell in your body. Once it reaches the cells, oxygen processes the nutrients to release energy.
Carbon dioxide is given off during this process. The blood delivers carbon dioxide into the right portion of your heart,
from which it is pumped to the lungs. Carbon dioxide leaves your body through the lungs when you exhale.
4. The process of the exchange of the oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs is through inhalation and
exhalation.
5. If my blood level is too low my body may not work properly, and it may also lead to hypoxemia that can cause
mild problems such as headaches and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can interfere with the heart and the brain

For Generalization:
1. veins right atrium right ventricle lungs
lungs capillaries left atrium left ventricle aorta
2. Air first enters your lungs and then into the left part of your heart. It is then driven by your heart into the
bloodstream, all the way through your body. The heart pumps blood, which transports essential nutrients, oxygen, and
other chemicals to every cell in your body. Once it reaches, oxygen processes the nutrients to release energy. Carbon
dioxide is given off during this process. The blood delivers carbon dioxide into the right portion of your heart from which
it is pumped to the lungs. Carbon dioxide leaves your body through the lungs when you exhale.
3. Therefore, the respiratory and circulatory system works together to give/circulate blood and oxygen
throughout the body,

II. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED (pp. 11 – 12)

1. Heart 6. Capillaries
2. Blood 7. Arteries
3. Pumps blood 8. Pulmonary
4. Distribute blood 9. Coronary
5. Veins 10. Movement of the blood from the heart to the lungs.

LESSON 3 (THE HUMAN HEART)

I. WHAT’S NEW? / Activity 3 (pp. 13 – 14)
For Observations/Guide Question:
1. The human heart looks like a mechanical pump.
2. There is 2 chambers the atrium and the ventricle.
3.
Parts Description Function
1. Left Atrium Receiving chamber of the heart Receives blood from the lungs
2. Left Ventricle A pumping organ of the heart Pumps blood
3. Right Atrium Receiving chamber of the heart Receives blood
4. Right Ventricle A pumping organ of the heart Pumps blood
5. Valves Like a one-way road. Keep the blood flowing in one direction

4. Yes, because they have the same function, and it is to pump.

For Generalization:
1. Atrium if the receiving chamber of the heart and the ventricle is the pumping chamber of the heart.
2. To pump blood
3. If your heart fails to pump blood properly, blood often backs up and causes fluid to
build up in your lungs and in your legs, causing your legs to swell and turn blue
from lack of oxygenated blood flow.
