Chapter I
The problem and its background
Introduction
Teenagers' stress levels have come under increasing scrutiny recently because of the potential
harm it could do to their mental and physical health. Adolescence is a crucial stage marked by
many academic, interpersonal, and social challenges that can raise stress levels. Investigating
practical methods to control and lessen stress in this population has therefore become crucial.
Long recognized as a potential stress reduction technique, physical activity has many advantages
for people of all ages. It has been demonstrated to improve mood, lessen anxiety, and support
general psychological health. However, little is known about how exercise specifically affects
grade 10 students at Eusebio High School's stress levels.
Exercising has long been known to be good for one's physical health, but recent research has
focused more on how it can also improve one's mental health, including reducing stress. Regular
exercise has been linked to several advantages for mental health, including lowered stress levels,
enhanced mood, and increased overall well-being.
Eusebio High School, a prominent educational institution, has identified the need to address the
stress levels experienced by their Grade 10 students. This study aims to investigate the impact of
exercise on stress levels in this specific population.

Statement of the Problem

The Eusebio High School students in Grade 10 are under a lot of stress, which could have a
negative impact on their academic performance, emotional stability, and general health. It is
imperative to find efficient methods for managing and reducing stress in these students.

This study specifically sought to address the following question, which was the main focus of
this research:
a) It will show how stressed out the Grade 10 students at Eusebio High School are and how
urgently this problem needs to be addressed.
b) The results will add to the body of knowledge already available on the effects of exercise on
stress reduction in adolescents.
c) The findings of the study may help in the creation of programs and interventions that
effectively lower stress levels in students in Grade 10.
d) The findings of the study can help students live healthier, more balanced lives by highlighting
the value of regular exercise.
Scope of the Study:
1. Students in Grade 10: The study primarily focuses on Eusebio High School
students in Grade 10. This scope enables a more focused investigation of
stress levels and the effects of physical activity within this specific age
group.
2. The study investigates the effects of exercise on Grade 10 students' ability
to manage stress. It studies the connection between exercise and stress levels
while taking into account variables like exercise kind and intensity.
3. Stress Levels: The research measures kids in Grade 10's levels of stress
using validated instruments or questionnaires. It tries to ascertain the
participants' present levels of stress and how exercise may be able to reduce
stress.
Limitations of the Study:
1. The study's findings could only be applicable to pupils in Grade 10 at Eusebio High
School in general. There's a chance that kids at other schools or grade levels won't be able
to directly apply the findings.
2. Self-Reporting Bias: Because the study uses self-reported data, it is possible that bias
exists. Participants may under- or over-report their levels of stress or the benefits of
exercise depending on a number of variables, including social desirability bias or
erroneous self-perception.
3. External Factors: The study may not have taken into consideration external factors like
family dynamics, socioeconomic position, or academic pressure that might affect stress
levels. The link between exercise and stress reduction may be complicated by these
elements.
4. Sample Size and Diversity: The study's conclusions could be constrained by the study's
sample size and the lack of diversity among Eusebio High School's Grade 10 students.
The results might not fully reflect the experiences or demographics of all Grade 10
students.
5. Focus on the Short Term: The study may have a short time horizon and concentrate on
the short-term benefits of exercise on stress levels. The durability or long-term effects of
stress reduction through exercise may not have been adequately investigated.
6. Compliance and Dropout: Participant adherence to exercise programs and prospective
dropout rates may have an impact on the study's efficacy. The validity and
generalizability of the results might be compromised by low compliance or high dropout
rates.

Review of Related Literature and Studies
These reviews of the literature and research demonstrate the beneficial effects of exercise on
stress reduction and mental health in teenagers. They draw attention to the potential advantages
of using physical activity treatments in classrooms to aid students in managing their stress and
maintaining overall psychological health.
Foreign related literature
1. "The Effects of Physical Activity on Psychological Well-being in Adolescents" (Lubans
et al., 2016) This study looked at how physical exercise affects teenagers' psychological
health, especially their ability to cope with stress. The results showed that frequent
exercise was linked to better mental health outcomes, including lower levels of stress.
The study placed a strong emphasis on the value of including physical activity treatments
in educational settings.
2. "Physical Activity, Exercise, and Mental Health" (Stanton & Reaburn, 2014) The
connection between physical activity, exercise, and adolescent mental health was
underlined in this review. It was discovered that exercise reduced stress and had a
favorable effect on mental health. The study focused on the possible advantages of
physical exercise treatments in fostering teenage mental health.
Local related literature
1. “The effect of aerobic exercise on the cognitive ability of physical therapy students” (R.
Carlos, Y.B Gonzales and N. Lustre, 2013) Exercise maintains or enhances physical
fitness and overall health and wellness. The purpose of this study was to determine if
cognitive ability could be improved with regular aerobic exercise.

University of the Immaculate Conception” (P. Abucay, L. Miranda and R. Cevera, 2016)

Research Methodology
Research design
The research approach for this study will be a randomized controlled trial. This design will allow
for the evaluation of causal relationships between exercise and stress levels among grade 10
students.
This study specifically follows the case study method approach, which refers to an in-depth
study and data analyzing method that focuses on an individual, group, community, or other units
wherein the researcher will have to not only collect and analyze data from various factors but
generalize it in a way that the subject is to be understood across various several units and
subjects. (Heale and Twycross, 2018)

Respondents of the Study

The 40 responders were picked from a part of grade 10 Eusebio High School students' year 2023.
the Pascal and Snell section. One of the crucial steps in keeping this study successful. These
individuals were all chosen by random sampling. With this sampling technique, every person in
the population has the potential to be included in the sample.

Research instrument
Using surveys, measurements can be used as study instruments to analyze the effects of
exercise on stress levels among grade 10 students at Eusebio High School. The tools listed
below can be used. This survey is intended to learn more about the exercise preferences of
students in grade 10. It contains information on the participants' frequency, duration, and
type of exercise activities. This tool can offer useful information about exercise habits,
enabling researchers to look at the connection between exercise habits and stress levels.

Data gathering procedures

After determining the validity and reliability of the data collection methods, creating study-
specific research questions, and making all required adjustments to the selected
respondent. Upon the approval of the teachers regarding the research instrument, the
researchers then proceeded to contact the respondents who agreed to take part in the
study. Forty (40) students from Eusebio High School will be surveyed using a Google Form,
and their responses and identity will be kept if both the respondents and the researchers
agree.

Post Data gathering procedures

After making the transcripts, the researchers analyzed the answers given to them by the
respondents, and grouped their answers Afterwards, they summarized everything and concluded
the study. They formulated the recommendations after doing so. Lastly, they finalized their
research paper regarding to The Impact of Exercise on Stress Levels in grade 10 students of
Eusebio High School.
