1.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The primary objective of the project is to sustain gas supplies to NLNG trains 1 to 6. The project was
conceptualized on optimisation of SPDC’s infrastructure usage by utilising spare capacity that will
become available in Soku Gas Plant as from 2014. Non Associated Gas from Kolo Creek Deep (F1
and F2 reservoirs) shall be bulked in a manifold and evacuated through approx. 20” x 40km bulkline
to Soku Gas Plant for proces
processing
sing and onward sales to NLNG trains 1 to 6. The Kolo Creek field is
situated in the southern part of OML-28
OML 28 in the seasonal flooding fresh-water
fresh swamp area, some
18km southeast of the Gbaran CPF and about 90km west of Port Harcourt. It is one of SPDC’s
Eastern
stern Division fields considered as part of the Gbaran-Ubie
Gbaran Ubie nodal development to provide feed
stock gas for the NLNG Trains 1 to 6.
The Kolo Creek to Soku project optimizes SPDC’s infrastructure usage in the short term and
maximizes ullage for both the So
Soku and Gbaran areas.
The EPC contract scope with NestOil PLC for this project is summarized as follows;

1. Four (4) flowlines from the F2 wells to the new Kolo Creek (intermediate) production
headers with the proper control, safeguarding, metering and monitoring
monito requirements.
2. Three (3) flowlines from the F1 wells to the new Kolo Creek (intermediate) production
headers with the proper control, safeguarding, metering and monitoring requirements.
3. Three (3) intermediate production headers combining the seven (7) F1 and F2 flowlines into
three (3) intermediate bulklines.
4. Three (3) intermediate bulklines with HIPPS and the proper control, safeguarding, metering
and monitoring requirements.
5. One (1) Kolo Creek manifold combining the three (3) intermediate bulklines into
i the 20-inch,
40 km long bulkline to the Soku Gas Plant.
6. 20-inch,
inch, 40 km long carbon steel pipeline (including the pig launcher and receiver and
proper control, safeguarding, metering and monitoring requirements) from Kolo Creek NAG
manifold to the Soku Gas Plant designed for evacuation of 400 MMscf/d from Kolo Creek
NAG manifold. This pipeline will traverse some communities in Niger Delta, Nigeria though
the intention of the routing was to avoid it as much as possible.
7. Slug-catcher
catcher at the Soku Gas Plant and full integration with the existing Soku Gas Plant
including definition of process control and safe guarding systems.
8. Utilities in Kolo Creek and Soku Gas Plant to ensure safe and cost effective evacuation of
400 MMscf/d from Kolo Creek to Soku.

1.1 Scope and Objectives

The objective of this interpretative report is to:

• Outline soil properties as obtained from the geotechnical investigation carried out by
Polaris in August 2013 for Soku Gas Plant and Kolo Creek.

• Compute and outline Shallow foundation and deep

deep foundation allowable capacities to
be adopted for the detailed design of all foundations in this project. The computations
are to be based on soil properties supplied by the geotechnical investigation report,
Ref: K2S-NG01007551
NG01007551-GEN-CG6968-00010

1.2 Methodology

A geotechnical investigation was carried out with the aim of obtaining geotechnical parameters for the
foundation works of the sludge-catcher
sludge catcher and other facilities at Soku for the 40km 20” bulk line between
Kolo Creek and Soku. Computations and checks were made for the proposed pile foundation sizes,
using the given soil properties and findings of the Geotechnical Investigation report to establish their
resistance capacities.

Following the procedure outlined in the codes for soil and foundation analysis,
analysi adequate resistance
capacities for compression, tension and traverse loading, have been deduced for the deep and
shallow foundations intended for use in this project.
project

The limit state design approach was used throughout. Based on the ultimate values obtained,
allowable values were obtained using the partial factors of safety as provided in EN1997

4.0 SITE DESCRIPTION & SOIL PROPERTIES

4.1 Kolocreek

4.1.1 Site Description & Geology

This site is situated in Kolo Creek, close to SPDC present “Kolo Creek NAG and Oil Manifold”. Kolo
Creek is in Kolokuma/Opukuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Kolokuma/Opukuma Local
Government Area is one of the eight
eight Local Government Areas in Bayelsa State with headquarters at
Kaiama. The local geology of the site is composed of sediments which are characteristic of several
depositional environments as the River Niger empties her load into the Atlantic Ocean through
throu
tributaries which also merge downstream into other rivers of which the Kolo Creek is a part. The
deposit gives rise to plant growth which matures to become swamp forest. The tidal swamp forest
covers a substantial area of the delta coastline, with the exception
e of the zone adjacent to the river
plains, where they are overlain by recent deposits of river mouth sediments. The growth of plants on
the surfaces of these sediments aided further slowing down of the River flow which encouraged further
plant growth. The site area falls within one of these tidal swamp area encompassed within a water
body, the Kolo Creek. The Figure below show the location of the Boreholes and CPT points from
which the soil strata and properties were deduced

Geotechnical investigation reveals that the soil depth is characterized predominantly by peaty clays,
Fine, fine to medium sands as summarized below . The lithology of the site reveals a formation of fine
sand to a depth of 2.0m underlain by stratum of peat between 2.0 and 6.8m below the existing ground
level. From 6.8m to 21.0m depth, fine ssand
and is again observed in the explored hole. From 21.0m to the
final 30.0m depth of the investigation stiff clay is encountered which becomes sandy with depth.

5.2 Bearing Capacity Check – Continuous Flight Auger Pile

The Design Pile Resistance, Rc,d, of CFA piles is determined by the equation

Rc,d = Rb,d + Rs,d ............ (EN1997 Eq 7.6)

Where,

Rb;d = End bearing resistance of the pile = qb.Ab

Rs;d = skin frictional resistance of the pile = fs.As

Therefore,

Rc;d = qb.Ab + fs.As .................. (EN1997 Eq 7.9)

Where

qb = unit end bearing capacity, kPa

fs = unit skin friction, kPa

2
Ab = gross base area of pile tip, m
2
As = side surface area of pile, m

(A) End bearing resistance of the pile

The
e end bearing resistance, Rb;d, of the pile is determined as follows;

In cohesive soil, Rb;d = Nc *cu * Ab

In non-cohesive soil Rb;d = Nq* σv’* Ab

Where,

cu = characteristics undrained shear strength of the clay at the pile toe.

Nq* = bearing capacity factor

fact

σv’ = vertical effective stress at the pile toe

(B) Shaft resistance of the pile

The shaft resistance, Rs;d, of the pile is determined from the following equation;

Cohesive soil, Rs;d = α *cu * As

cohesive soil Rs;d = Ks* σv * tanδ * Ab

Non-cohesive

5.2.1 Pile Compressive Resistance Computation for Kolo Creek-

BH 2 has been adopted for the pile compressive capacity computation as its
it parameters and strata
arrangement appears to be more conservative when compared to BH1. The Meyerhof critical
cri Depth
approach
ch was used to compute shaft resistance to further improve the safety of the piles.

6.0 DISCUSSION / RECOMMENDATION

From the geotechnical result interpretati

interpretation and capacity computations, loose to dense sand is encountered
at a depth of 10.0m and 15m both with cone tip and SPT tests at both the Soku Gas plant site and Kolo
Creek, which seems to be convenient stratum for pile termination.. Resistance values to compressive,
co tensile,
and lateral loads at these depths have been established.

Engineering analysis carried out on shallow foundations have

ha also been made available in this report. The
capacities of both pad and raft foundations to a maximum width and length of 13 m have been established to
a satisfactory level using the Terzaghi 1956 approach and the Meyerhoff
hoff 1963 approach. Based on these
findings,, recommendations for deep and shallow
shallow foundations to be adopted for detailed engineering
computations are given in sections below.

6.1 Recommendation For Deep Foundation

The recommendation for deep foundation has been made based on availability of materials
mat in the market,
ease of construction and structural stability.
stability. For deep foundations a summary of the pile capacities
capacit to be
adopted is given in the table below;

For Soku, additional

dditional Factor of safety should be applied to reduce the allowable working pile capacity to a
value in which settlement shall not exceed 20mm.

6.2 Recommendation For Shallow Foundation

The bearing capacity values computed by Meyerhof’s method shall be used for shallow foundation design
generally, being more conservative than Terzaghi's.
