CHAPTER III: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study will use phenomenology research design. This design

focuses on the study of lived experienced or life – world (Van Manen

1997.) Phenomenology rejects the concept of objective research. The

emphasis instead is on the world as lived by an individual, not the

world or reality as something separate from the individual. It is the

lived experience that gives meaning to each individual's perception of

a phenomenon and thus presents to the individual what is true or real

in her or his life (Giorgi 2000.) Phenomenological study was chosen for

this research because it is a method that can be used to identify the

meaning of the experiences that the participants have of self-directed

learning and their perceptions of the process. It is applicable because

it is one way to understand the most reasons of the students why they

are engaging in cigarette and alcohol consumption.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted in Cahagnaan National High School, is a

school in the province of Leyte, Region VIII Eastern Visayas, the

municipality of Matalom. And situated along the highway of

Cahagnaan Matalom Leyte. It was established on January 1 1967.

Ryl, Grade 12 two (2) section ; Merly and Corazon. Additionally, it has

15 classroom in the campus, and one (1) multi- purpose gym.

Researcher choose to conduct their research at this school because of

the report that there are lots of students who are engaging smoking

and drinking alcohol.

Research Respondents

(25) Senior High School students, its composed of thirteen (13) Grade

11; eight (8) males and five (5) females, and twelve (12) Grade 12;

seven (7) males and five (5) females. The respondents are selected

using the quota sampling .

Data Sampling Procedure

This study will use the Qouta Sampling procedure, localities are

selected and interviewer’s are assigned a starting point, a specified

collection, and a good of trying to meet quotas for subsets selected

from the population. The researcher will select twenty-five (25)

respondents from senior high school students to answer the said

interview. The researcher will utilize the research made questions, the

interview as the main data instruments.

Data Gathering Sampling

The researcher will ask first a permission to the principal of the school

to conduct the research. The researcher will also give a consent letter

to the selected students to the respondents of the said research. After,

the letter is being signed and permitted, the study will start and being

answer by the respondents correctly and honestly. The researcher will

gather data from the respondents of senior high school using interview

question. The questions will be answered by the twenty-five (25)

selected students. The researcher will use the given time for vacant

and avoid class distraction. The senior high school responses will be

given enough to answer the questions. After data gathering,

researcher will collect the information to be categorized and apply the

thematic analysis to be used.

Data Analysis
The acquired data were analyzed in order to create a correct and

understandable interpretation. The interview method was employed to

ascertain the opinions of the chosen students, who often consume

alcohol and smoke cigarettes. To highlight the themes, the responses

will be meticulously transcribed before being submitted to cool and

warm analysis. Additionally, the study's overall theme analysis used

open and axial coding. Consequently, a summary chart shows the

causes of the students' alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking.
