Unit 7

New sport
New Sport Unit

Unit overview
In this unit, you will experience a new sport. It is important to have a choice
of sporting experiences. This will help you to improve your skills and abilities
for your whole body. By playing more sports, you might find a sport you
really enjoy. You may succeed in it too. It could also mean you will be able
to compete in that sport outside of school and play at a higher level.

You will coach your classmates in this sport. This is to help you understand
how to identify someone’s strengths and areas for improvement. This will
help your classmates to improve their performance level.

You will also think about your own performance. It is harder to analyse your
own strengths and areas for improvement. This unit will help you develop
and improve your reflective skills.

The areas you will learn about include:

Movement in sport – How to successfully move for your sport

Skills – How to perform the technical skills needed for gameplay
Tactics – The strategies you need to be successful
Rules – The guidelines you must follow and what happens if you
break them
Analysis of performance – Identifying your strengths and areas for
improvement

Introduction
You will learn about a sport in this unit. Sports are physical activities
that have structure, competition and rules. You will learn new skills and
knowledge that will allow you to enjoy playing this sport. You will learn
about decision-making, teamwork, tactics and rules.

Activity 1

Skills
Skills are movements that you need for playing or performing your sport
well. Practising skills is important as it helps you get better and achieve
success. Each skill has a technique (a way of doing something). If you have
good technique and can perform a skill under control, you will be more
successful.

Activity 3

Think about the skills you need to be successful in your sport. Some skills
are more important than others because you use them more. What are
the THREE most important skills in your sport? Write the most important
skill at the top.

Activity 4

Choose ONE skill from Activity 3. Describe how to perform it with good
technique.

successful in your sport. Tactics are decided based on what’s happening
in the game, your opponent and your own strengths and abilities.

Teamwork
A lot of sports need good teamwork. Teamwork is when players work
together to try and be successful. A team who uses teamwork well will be
more difficult to beat than a team who does not work together.

Activity 7

Put a next to the sentences that are good examples of teamwork skills.

Talking and listening to each other

Refusing to pass

Helping a teammate who is struggling

Trying to be the one who scores all the time

Passing to a teammate in a better position

Every sport has its own set of rules. Rules are important. They are there to
make sure that the sport is fair and safe for everyone. If a player does not
follow the rules, there are consequences.

Etiquette in sport
Etiquette is about responsible behaviour in sport. This behaviour could be
towards your opponents, the official or the people watching (spectators).
This behaviour is not stated in the rules but it shows that you have respect
for others and the sport. Different sports may have different ways to show
good etiquette.

Activity 9

Think of words that relate to etiquette in sport. Write as many as you can
in the box below.
