Site Analysis
Climate

Nepal can be divided into five major tectonic zones: Terai, Siwaliks, Middle Mountains, High Kathmandu
Mountains, Higher Himalayas. Nepal’s climate, ranges from subtropical monsoon conditions in
the Tarai, through a warm temperate climate in the mid-mountain region, to cool temperate
conditions in the higher parts of mountains.

Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal has the average elevation of 1,400 (4600 ft) meters above sea
level and hence experiences warm temperate climate.

Sun Path

• According to Sun Path diagram of Kathmandu, summer sun and winter sun are mostly in the south as shown in Figure.

• The undesirable low summer sun can penetrate deeper into the building from west facade during peak hours.

• North facade is preferred in summers as it experiences negligible sun. The Desirable winter sun is from south direction.

Shading Design

Shading is required in the

summers and the cold season
starts from the October, so the
solar angle of October 1st is
taken into consideration for the
length of shading used.
