1.1.1 Fuel System

WARNING

There is a risk of injury because the fuel is under very high

pressure.
♦ Fuel system is under pressure! Fuel pressure must be re‐
duced to a residual pressure before opening high pressure
area of the injection system. Refer to
⇒ “2.8 Releasing Pressure in High Pressure Area”,
page 34 .
♦ After reducing high pressure, connection should be
opened immediately. To do this, place a cloth around the
connection to reduce residual pressure (approximately 7
bar).
Burn risk due to escaping fuel.
♦ Because the Transfer Fuel Pump - G6- runs briefly when
the battery is connected and the driver's door is opened,
the voltage supply to the

Caution

Risk of destroying electronic components when disconnecting

the battery.
♦ Observe measures for disconnecting battery.

– Disconnect the battery. Refer to ⇒ Electrical Equipment; Rep.

Gr. 27 ; Removal and Installation .

1.1.2 Ignition System

To reduce the risk of personal injury and/or damage to the fuel
injection and ignition system, always observe the following:
♦ For safety reasons, if the battery is not disconnected, the fuel
pump control module - J538- fuse must be removed before
opening fuel system. Otherwise, the fuel pump will be activa‐
ted by the driver door contact switch.

♦ Individuals with a pacemaker must not stay in the danger area

of high voltage systems, for example ignition systems, xenon
light.
♦ Only disconnect and reconnect wires for injection and ignition
system, including test leads, when ignition is switched off.
♦ Delete any DTC memory entries that occurred during testing
or assembly Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, Guided Functions ,
Check DTC memory , and then Generate readiness code .

♦ Cleaning the engine should only be performed with ignition

switched off.
♦ The battery must only be disconnected and connected with the
ignition switched off, since the Engine Control Module (ECM)
can otherwise be damaged.
♦ If engine is to be cranked at starting RPM without starting (for
example, for compression testing), disconnect the four ignition
coil connectors using the Ignition Coil Puller - T40039- . Refer
to ⇒ “4.3 Ignition Coils”, page 87 .
♦ Also remove fuse for the Fuel Pump Control Module - J538- .

1.1.3 Test and Measuring Instruments during

Test Drive
If special testing equipment is required during road test, note the
following:

WARNING

Improperly secured testing and measuring equipment and dis‐

traction during a road test increase the risk of an accident.
The passenger airbag could pose a risk if it deploys in a colli‐
sion.
• Operating testing equipment while driving causes it to shift
position.
• There is an increased risk of injury due to unsecured test‐

♦ Position passenger's seat as far back as possible.

♦ Do NOT use the following vehicle diagnosis testers: VAS
5051 , VAS 5051A and VAS 5051B .
♦ Testing and measuring instruments -1- must lay flat on the
passenger's thighs and be operated by him or her, as
shown in the illustration.

1.2 Clean Working Conditions

Even a little contamination can lead to faults. When working on
the fuel supply and on the fuel injection system, observe the fol‐
lowing guidelines for a clean working environment:
♦ Before loosening, connections and surrounding areas must be
cleaned thoroughly with engine or brake cleaner, and then
cleaned area must be dried completely.
♦ Plug open lines and connections immediately with appropriate
protective caps.
♦ Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover them. Use
lint-free cloths.
♦ Only install clean components: Remove the replacement parts
from their packaging just prior to installing them. Do not use
parts that have been stored loose (for example in tool boxes
etc.).
♦ When the system is open: Do not work with compressed air.
Do not move vehicle unless absolutely necessary.
♦ Protect the disconnected connectors from dirt and moisture
and only connect when they are dry.

1.3 On Board Diagnostics

♦ The Engine Control Module (ECM) is equipped with On Board
Diagnostics (OBD). Before repairs such as fault finding, check
the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory first. Also the
vacuum hoses and connections must be checked (unmetered
air).
♦ Fuel hoses in engine compartment must only be secured with
spring-type clips. The use of clamp or screw type clips is not
permissible.
♦ For the electric components to work properly, a voltage of at
least 11.5 Volts is required.

age the oxygen sensor.
♦ The vehicles have a crash fuel shut-off. It reduces the risk of
fire in an accident because the fuel pump relay switches the
fuel pump off.
♦ This setup also makes it easier to start the engine. When the
driver-side door is opened, the fuel pump is activated for 2
seconds so that pressure builds in the fuel system, observe
safety measures. Refer to
⇒ “1.1.3 Test and Measuring Instruments during Test Drive”,

2.8 Releasing Pressure in High Pressure

Area
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Vehicle Diagnostic Tester

34 Rep. Gr.24 - Multiport Fuel Injection

Audi R8 2007 ➤ , Audi R8 Spyder 2010 ➤
Fuel Injection and Ignition - Edition 03.2013

WARNING

There is a risk of injury because the fuel is under very high

pressure.
♦ The fuel injection system is separated into a high-pressure
section (maximum approximately 140 bar) and a low-
pressure section (4 to 7 bar).
♦ Before opening high pressure parts, for example, remov‐
ing high pressure pump, fuel rail, fuel injectors, fuel pipes
or Fuel Pressure Sensor - G247- , fuel pressure in high
pressure area must be reduced to the recommended pres‐
sure. The procedure for this is as follows.

Procedure
– R8 Coupe: Remove the rear shelf. Refer to ⇒ Body Interior;
Rep. Gr. 70 ; Removal and Installation .
– R8 Spyder: Remove the right rear connector station and move
the connected Ground wire and sockets to the side. Refer to
⇒ Electrical Equipment; Rep. Gr. 97 ; Removal and Installa‐
tion .
– Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
– Start engine and run at idle speed.
– Select “engine electronics” in OBD.
– Then select “Measured values” read out.
– Select measured value block 140.
– With the engine running at idle, the fuel pressure will be dis‐
played in display field 3.
♦ Specified value: between 35 and 45 bar

2. Description and Operation 35

Audi R8 2007 ➤ , Audi R8 Spyder 2010 ➤
Fuel Injection and Ignition - Edition 03.2013

– With the engine running at idle, remove the fuel pump fuse -
S81- in the “9-pin relay and fuse panel” for the fuel pump
control module - J538- .

Note

“9-pin relay and fuse panel” current routing. Refer to Wiring dia‐
grams, Troubleshooting & Component locations.

– Check the fuel pressure on the tester.

• The fuel pressure decreases rapidly because the mechanical
high pressure pump is no longer supplied with fuel from the
transfer fuel pump - G6- .
– Turn the ignition off as soon as the fuel pressure drops to ap‐
proximately 8 bar.

Note

The fuel pressure must not drop below 6 bar, because otherwise
the engine will shut off (risk of catalytic converter damage).

The fuel rail will continue to be filled with fuel, but it will no longer
be under high pressure.

WARNING

Do not let fuel come into contact with skin.

♦ Wear protective eyewear and clothing when opening the
fuel system.
♦ Lay clean cloths around the connection before opening
the high pressure area to collect any fuel that leaks out.

– After reducing fuel pressure, place a clean cloth around the

connection and open the high pressure system at any point
immediately. Escaping fuel must be absorbed.
Protected by copyright. Copying for private or commercial purposes, in part or in whole, is not
permitted unless authorised by AUDI AG. AUDI AG does not guarantee or accept any liability
with respect to the correctness of information in this document. Copyright by AUDI AG.

Note

♦ If the high pressure system is not opened immediately, the

pressure will increase because of post-heating.
♦ The ignition can no longer be switched on, otherwise the pres‐
sure will increase again.

Final procedures
– Install the fuse.
– Check the DTC memory Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, Guided
Functions , Check DTC memory . Generate readiness
code if the DTC memory was erased.

Note

♦ The test box has 105 terminals. The connection cable can be
separated from the test box. This means that as new Engine
Control Module (ECM) connectors are introduced in the future,
only a new cable must be designed and no longer the entire
test box.
♦ The smaller of the two connectors on the ECM is assigned with
terminals 1 to 60. The larger of the two connectors is assigned
with terminals 1 to 94.
♦ For testing at the 60-pin harness connection, the -V.A.G
1598/39-1- is connected to the test box with connector -A-.
Components of the 60-pin harness connection, refer to ⇒ Wir‐
ing diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component locations.
♦ For testing at the 94-pin harness connection, the -V.A.G
1598/39-2- is connected to the test box with connectors -A-
and -B-. Components of the 94-pin harness connection, refer
to ⇒ Wiring diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component loca‐
tions.
♦ The -V.A.G 1598/42- is designed so that it can be connected
simultaneously to the ECM harness and the ECM itself.
♦ This is advantageous because electronic engine control re‐
mains fully functional (for example measurement of signals
with engine running) when the test box is attached.
♦ The procedures will indicate whether the ECM is to remain
connected to the test box or not.

WARNING

To avoid damaging electronic components, switch to the cor‐

responding measuring range and observe all test conditions
before connecting the test leads.

threads must be heated with the heat gun to remove both bolts.
The threads of both shear bolts -3- (that are installed in ECM) are

The ECM is secured with a retainer and shear bolts with a pro‐
tective housing to make it more difficult to access the connectors.

The threads of the shear bolts -4- (that are not installed in ECM)
are coated with a locking compound. For this reason, the threads
must be heated with the heat gun to remove both bolts.
The threads of both shear bolts -3- (that are installed in ECM) are
not coated with a locking compound. The threads in the ECM
housing must not be heated and do not require to be heated (un‐
intentional heating of the ECM).

Set the adjustment on the heat gun as shown in the illustration,

with the temperature potentiometer -2- set to maximum heat and
the two-stage airflow switch -3- set to level 3.

WARNING

By heating the threads, the retaining tabs, shear bolts and parts
of the metal housing become very hot. Do not burn yourself on
this! Make sure that only the threads are heated as much as
possible, and not any of the surrounding parts. Possibly cover
these parts.

Warm threads on connector side of shear bolts as shown in illus‐

tration.

Switch on heat gun and heat the bolt for approximately 20 to 30

seconds.

1.1 Safety Precautions

If special testing equipment is required during road test, note the
following:

WARNING

Improperly secured testing and measuring equipment and dis‐

traction during a road test increase the risk of an accident.
The passenger airbag could pose a risk if it deploys in a colli‐
sion.
• Operating testing equipment while driving causes it to shift
position.
• There is an increased risk of injury due to unsecured test‐
ing equipment.

To reduce the risk of personal injury and/or damage to the fuel

injection and ignition system, always observe the following:
♦ Do not touch or remove ignition wires when the engine is run‐
ning or turning at starter speed.
♦ Always switch ignition off before disconnecting or reconnect‐
ing wires for the ignition system, including high voltage wiring
and test leads.

(for example for compression testing), disconnect connectors
from ignition coils and from fuel injectors. After performing
work, check and erase Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) mem‐
ory.
♦ If the DTC memory was erased, then it is necessary to gen‐
erate a readiness code in the Engine Control Module (ECM)
in “Guided Functions” vehicle diagnosis tester.
♦ Cleaning the engine should only be performed with ignition
switched off.
♦ The battery must only be disconnected and connected with the
ignition switched off, since the ECM can otherwise be dam‐
aged.

1.2 Ignition System

♦ The Engine Control Module (ECM) is equipped with On Board
Diagnostics (OBD).

1. General Information 79
Audi R8 2007 ➤ , Audi R8 Spyder 2010 ➤
Fuel Injection and Ignition - Edition 03.2013

♦ For the electric components to work properly, a voltage of at

least 11.5 Volts is required.
♦ It is possible that the control module will recognize a malfunc‐
tion and store a Diagnostic Control Module (DTC) during some
tests. After completing all checks and repairs, check the DTC
memory and erase the memory, if necessary.
♦ If the engine only starts briefly and then turns off again after
troubleshooting, repair or checking of the components, it may
be that the immobilizer is blocking the ECM. The DTC memory
must then be checked and if necessary, control module must
be adapted.

•= Do not attempt to work on your vehicle if you do not feel well. You increase the danger of injury to
yourself and others if you are tired, upset or have taken medicine or any other substances that
may impair you or keep you from being fully alert.

•= Never run the engine unless the work area is well ventilated. Carbon monoxide (CO) kills.

•= Always observe good workshop practices. Wear goggles when you operate machine tools or work
with acid. Wear goggles, gloves and other protective clothing whenever the job requires working
with harmful substances.

•= Tie long hair behind your head. Do not wear a necktie, a scarf, loose clothing, or a necklace when
you work near machine tools or running engines. If your hair, clothing, or jewelry were to get
caught in the machinery, severe injury could result.

Cautions & Warnings
•= Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Some fasteners are
designed to be used only once and are unreliable and may fail if used a second time. This
includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, circlips and cotter pins. Always follow the
recommendations in this manual - replace these fasteners with new parts where indicated, and
any other time it is deemed necessary by inspection.

•= Illuminate the work area adequately but safely. Use a portable safety light for working inside or
under the vehicle. Make sure the bulb is enclosed by a wire cage. The hot filament of an
accidentally broken bulb can ignite spilled fuel or oil.

•= Friction materials such as brake pads and clutch discs may contain asbestos fibers. Do not create
dust by grinding, sanding, or by cleaning with compressed air. Avoid breathing asbestos fibers and
asbestos dust. Breathing asbestos can cause serious diseases such as asbestosis or cancer, and
may result in death.

•= Finger rings should be removed so that they cannot cause electrical shorts, get caught in running
machinery, or be crushed by heavy parts.

all the instructions thoroughly, do not attempt shortcuts. Use tools that are appropriate to the work
and use only replacement parts meeting Audi specifications. Makeshift tools, parts and
procedures will not make good repairs.

•= Catch draining fuel, oil or brake fluid in suitable containers. Do not use empty food or beverage
containers that might mislead someone into drinking from them. Store flammable fluids away from
fire hazards. Wipe up spills at once, but do not store the oily rags, which can ignite and burn
spontaneously.

•= Use pneumatic and electric tools only to loosen threaded parts and fasteners. Never use these
tools to tighten fasteners, especially on light alloy parts. Always use a torque wrench to tighten
fasteners to the tightening torque listed.

•= Keep sparks, lighted matches, and open flame away from the top of the battery. If escaping
hydrogen gas is ignited, it will ignite gas trapped in the cells and cause the battery to explode.

•= Be mindful of the environment and ecology. Before you drain the crankcase, find out the proper
way to dispose of the oil. Do not pour oil onto the ground, down a drain, or into a stream, pond, or
lake. Consult local ordinances that govern the disposal of wastes.

•= The air-conditioning (A/C) system is filled with a chemical refrigerant that is hazardous. The A/C
system should be serviced only by trained automotive service technicians using approved
refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment, trained in related safety precautions, and familiar with
regulations governing the discharging and disposal of automotive chemical refrigerants.

•= Before doing any electrical welding on vehicles equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS), disconnect
the battery negative terminal (ground strap) and the ABS control module connector.

•= Do not expose any part of the A/C system to high temperatures such as open flame. Excessive
heat will increase system pressure and may cause the system to burst.

Cautions & Warnings
•= When boost-charging the battery, first remove the fuses for the Engine Control Module (ECM), the
Transmission Control Module (TCM), the ABS control module, and the trip computer. In cases
where one or more of these components is not separately fused, disconnect the control module
connector(s).

•= Some of the vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with a supplemental restraint system
(SRS), that automatically deploys an airbag in the event of a frontal impact. The airbag is operated
by an explosive device. Handled improperly or without adequate safeguards, it can be accidentally
activated and cause serious personal injury. To guard against personal injury or airbag system
failure, only trained Audi Service technicians should test, disassemble or service the airbag
system.

•= Do not quick-charge the battery (for boost starting) for longer than one minute, and do not exceed
16.5 volts at the battery with the boosting cables attached. Wait at least one minute before
boosting the battery a second time.

•= Never use a test light to conduct electrical tests of the airbag system. The system must only be
tested by trained Audi Service technicians using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) or an approved
equivalent. The airbag unit must never be electrically tested while it is not installed in the vehicle.

•= Some aerosol tire inflators are highly flammable. Be extremely cautious when repairing a tire that
may have been inflated using an aerosol tire inflator. Keep sparks, open flame or other sources of
ignition away from the tire repair area. Inflate and deflate the tire at least four times before
breaking the bead from the rim. Completely remove the tire from the rim before attempting any
repair.

•= When driving or riding in an airbag-equipped vehicle, never hold test equipment in your hands or
lap while the vehicle is in motion. Objects between you and the airbag can increase the risk of
