Techniques in
Good
Photography
Framing
Involves using
elements of a
scene to
create a frame
around your
subject.
Leading Lines
You can use lines to
draw attention to the
main subject of interest
in your photograph,
and they’re also an
excellent way to create
a sense of depth and
lead the viewer’s eyes
through an image.
Symmetry
A powerful
compositional
tool, because
humans are
naturally drawn to
symmetry and
balance.
Negative Space
Negative space in a
photograph refers to
the areas of an image
that are left open, such
as the sky or other areas
in an image such as a
blank wall, long stretch
of floor or other empty
background.
Fill the Frame
Requires you to
get in as close as
possible to your
subject to blocks
out any potential
distractions.
Use contrast
Contrast can also be
used in composition,
because including
contrasting elements
in a photograph
allows you to make a
stronger visual
impact.
Repetition and
Patterns
Patterns and
repetition can also
be very eye-
catching but
Breaking the pattern
can also make for a
very dramatic effect.
Depth of
Field
Playing with depth of
field allows you to
clearly define the
foreground and
background and
dictate what the
viewer will focus on.
Functions of Photographs
•Communication

A photograph can communicate

general information. It informs and
expresses emotions.
Functions of Photographs
•Credibility

A photograph makes
whatever is pictured seem
more real and true. People
are inclined to believe
what they see than what
they read.
Functions of Photographs
•Visual Appeal

Photographs are visual

magnets, drawing readers
into a page or a story. It
adds life to a story in a way
no illustration could match.
In writing captions…
The specific information required can vary from one
photo to the next. But for most pictures a reader wants
to know such information as:
• Who is that? (In most cases, identify people from left
to right unless the action in the photograph
demands otherwise.)
• Why is this picture in the paper?
• What's going on?
• When and where was this?
• Why does he/she/it/they look that way?
• How did this occur?
✓Simply stated, cutlines should
explain the picture so that readers
are satisfied with their
understanding of the picture.
✓They need not — and should not —
tell what the picture has made
obvious.
✓It should supply vital information that
the picture cannot.
