The lists provide continuous, cumulative revision of previous phonics and vocabulary. Each Fluency List
includes letter sounds, decodable words, nonsense words*, Tricky Words, and sentences . These items are
chosen primarily from the preceding four to six lessons with some items from earlier lessons.
* The little alien indicates an 'alien' word. You can describe it as something an alien might say.
They are not real words, they are nonsense words. These words allow you to identify if children
can sound out the letters and blend them together correctly as they can not rely on knowing or
recognising these words as whole units.
Objectives
• To build towards automatic word recognition of decodable words.
• To read previously taught Tricky Words quickly (common exception words).
• To read sentences with expression and fluency.
Basic Procedure (see page 299 for a full explanation of the procedure)
Day 1
• Echo-read each line of phonemes as the children point to each one.
• Set a pace that most children will be able to follow but that also provides a bit of challenge.
• Sentences Read the sentences with a rhythm and slightly exaggerated expression.
• Choral-read You and the children read the whole list together at a steady pace.
• Pace You can guide the pace again by fading your voice in and out as needed.
• Partner-reading Ask the children to read the list to a partner either just after choral-reading.
Day 2
• Echo-read or read chorally with all the children.
• Partner-read two times each.
• Listen to a few children read the list individually.
Day 3-5
• Echo-read or read chorally with all the children.
• Partner-read with different partners.
• (option) Dictate some of the words or sentences from the list for children to write.
