NATIONAL GRADE TWO ASSESSMENT
ADMINISTRATION OF READING
2. Become familiar with all sections of the Reading assessment. Pay attention
to the Instructions, Tally Sheets and Rating Scale before you begin to
administer the Reading Assessment.
5. The Reading Assessment must follow the same order as in the booklet-
That is'

«~ Made-up Words
• Reading Comprehension
6. Allow the child to read ,t he passage silently, before reading it aloud to
you.
7. Complete the Tally Sheet by using the scores from the section for Word
Recognition, Made-up words, Comprehension and Reading.
8. The class register should be used when assigning the Reading Passage.
Begin with the boys' register. The first child on the boy's register should be
given Re.ad.ing Passage A, the second child - Reading Passage B, and the
third and fourth- I<eading Passages C and D respectively. The cycle should
begii1 again with the fifth child. That is, the fifth child should be given
Reading passage A.
If the last boy on the register is given Reading Passage B, then the first girl
on the girls' register should be given Reading Passage C.
EACH CHILD SHOULD ONLY BE GIVEN ONE READING BOOKLET. THAT IS,
F~ITHER A, B, C, or D.

READING
1. Show the child the Word Recognition and Made-up Words sections. Let
him/her know that he/she is expected to read the words quickly.
4. Put a slash (/)on the words that are not read correctly and those that are
not read at all.
1. Immediately after doing the Word Recognition and made-up Words sections,
allow the child to read the passage silently before reading it aloud to you.
2. Put a slash(/) on the words that are not read correctly and on those that
are not read at all.
3. Immediately after the reading of the passage, ask the child the questions.
4. Indicate the questions that were answered correctly by ticking the question
nurn ber in · the box provided.
5. Note the correct answers, then tally the child's comprehension score and
place it in the appropriate box on the Tally Sheet.
7. Add the scores in all the boxes to compute the child's total score.
8. At the end of the Reading Assessment, record the child's scores in the
appropriate sections of the Tally Sheet.
10. Remember to complete the Tally Sheet for each child before
inviting another child to do the assessment.

A
A big brown rat lives in our yard. He chases the chickens and eats their corn.
One day the chickens got very angry. They run him and peck him on his head.
Now he comes into our house. He eats any food that is on the floor. He likes
carrots and bites other vegetables in the tray.
Dad and I plan to catch him. We set a trap with a piece of fish. The rat bites the
fish and runs under the cupboard. Dad puts a piece of cheese at the end of a
stick. We wait quietly. The rat comes out. As soon as he bites the cheese, Dad
hits him. The rat runs away. We never see him again.

Most persons have cats or dogs as pets. Aunt Lee is not like
these people. Her two pets are chickens. Both of them are girl
chickens or hens. One is called Lulu and the other Mindy.
One morning Aunt Lee called Mary to see her chickens take a
bath. They always take their own bath. Mary went to see the
chickens take their bath. When she walked into Aunt Lee's
backyard the two hens were flapping on the ground. Dust flew all
around them.
"When will they start taking their bath?' asked Mary. "That is what
they are doing", said Aunt Lee. They are taking their dust bath. It
cleans small bugs off their feathers and makes them feel good.

pond. They like to play in the brown water. They like to jump into the
brown water. Mother tells them not to jump into the water. One Saturday
Snap jumps into the water and hit his foot on something hard. His foot
hurts very much. He wants to cry, but he knows that Tim will laugh at him.
Tim helps him out of the water. One of his toes is very red and looks fat.
He wraps his toe in a leaf and sits down until it stops hurting. When he
gets up, it hurts a little but he is able to walk home.
