Prefixes
ge- = guh- genot (enjoyment) gelijk (straight / right / correct)
be- = buh- bereik (range) belang (importance)
ver- = vur- verslag (report) verlangen (desire / longing)
Foreign words
English and French words get the same pronunciations, except for grammatical suffixes.
ex.:
cadeau = [kado]
cadeaus = [kadoos]
game(s) is the same, because all foreign words get the -s plural… and that’s the same as in
English :p
medaille
maïs
feestje
mayonaise
trema’s
Whenever you use grammatical pre-/ suffixes for words and the letters combined create a
new sound, then you use a trema to preserve the different sounds.
Exercise 1:
Write the following sentence in a different way but still within the normal structure.
0. Wij gaan morgen lekker de taart bakken.
(We’re gladly going to bake the cake tomorrow)
Wij gaan morgen de taart lekker bakken. / Wij gaan de taart morgen lekker bakken.
1. Jullie kunnen ook de bus naar centraal toe nemen.
(You can also take the bus to the central station.)

It is preferred for definite objects to be put in the beginning of the rest part and indefinite
objects to be put in the end.
Ex.:
Ik bak graag koekjes. (I love to bake cookies.)
Ik bak de taart graag. (I love to bake the cake.)
Wij willen ook een ticket. (We also want a ticket.)
Wij willen de ticket ook. (We also want the ticket.)
Exercise 2:
Write the sentences with indefinite objects with their definite form or vice versa.
0. We bouwen het huis hier. (We’re building the house here.)
We bouwen hier een huis.
1. Ik wil ook een stukje taart. (I also want a piece of pie.)

2. Zij hebben de regels vandaag gemaakt. (They have made the rules today.)

3. Zij laat luid een luide geeuw. (She loudly lets loose a loud yawn.)
