ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This project would not have been a success without the generous assistances from the following
individuals and groups. Firstly, the BECV2 Fun would like express our sincere gratitude to our Lecturer,
Mr Stanley Tine, for lecturing and tutoring the course as well as providing field assistance to equip the
group with beforehand knowledge and information. Secondly, we would also like to extend our word of
thanks to the following surveying technical officers for taking records and lending field books and
equipment; Mr Wilson Tepend, Ms Maida Bonga, and Ms.. We do not forget these fellow class lads for
the important discussions which contribute to our procedures and sample calculations; namely, Bryne
Rummints and Mclean Dango. Finally, to our tireless and hard-working members: Puri Temu, Michelle
Maneipuri, Jeremiah Yapis, Jeremiah Keleino, Junior Wai, Benjamin Asiri, and Ben Jnr Kasila. We
really appreciate all the efforts, time, and contributions into this project.

INTRODUCTION

Basic Surveying may be defined as the “science of determining the position, in three dimensions, of
natural and man-made features on or beneath the surface of the earth” (Tine, 2017, p.1). There are two
divisions of basic surveying, Geodetic Surveying and Plane Surveying, which both involve different
methods and procedures, and are applicable based on the survey need and geographical features of the
earth. Numerous types of surveying methods become applicable only for certain nature and need of
survey applications such Cadastral Surveys, Topographic Surveys, Mining Surveys, Hydrographic
Surveys, Engineering Surveys, and Aerial Surveys. As the case for this project, we will particularly
discuss tacheometric survey in an engineering perspective, which covers a range of duties, necessarily
for the control of any construction project. The tachometric survey provides an easy method of
measuring the horizontal distance and vertical elevation of a point in the distance using the sophisticated
technology, electronic distance measurement (EDM). The method also provides a way of determining
the angles and bearings between monuments, and the reduced level for each monument.

In this project, we establish a maximum of five control points (or stations) in a closed loop traverse by
use of wooden pegs with nails hammered into each one of them. A magnetic north datum is selected via
determining the magnetic bearing from station 1 to station 5. Each of the station is made with reference
to each other for easy field booking and plotting, whilst the main feature of the traverse is the
Duncansion Hall.

Every single procedure requires careful attention and analysis to minimize the development of errors in
computations, field booking and sketching.

OBJECTIVES

The principle objective of the project is to help students understand and relate the theoretical and
practical application of SV292 concepts so that they (students) can be able to:

● Do set up of theodolite and level the instrument,

● Perform a closed loop traverse,

● Determine the horizontal distances, vertical elevations, bearings, and reduce level between

monuments,

● Make referential observations and detail pick up of physical features within the project site,

● Record field observations and results in a field book neatly and correctly,

● Plot and Sketch the site plan of the traverse, and

● Write a Survey Report

- 1x plumb bob
- 5x wooden pegs + nails
- 1x tripod
- 1x hammer
