UNIT 2: WORKING WITH GRAPHICS IN


MICROSOFT PAINT
In this unit, children will discover about working with graphics in Microsoft Paint. This program
is rarely used by many computer users. There are those who even do not know it exists. It is
important to know how to use Microsoft Paint program because there are a number of things you
can do with it.

The Paint program can be used to create simple to detailed drawings, but of course, it will depend
on who is doing it. The best thing is that these drawings can be done either in black and white or
in color.

The keys are arranged in groups according to their functions.


1. The control keys are used for the operating system of the computer.
2. The function keys have special tasks, for example F1 is for Help.
3. The alphanumeric keys are used to enter letters and numbers.
4. The navigation keys are used to move up, down, left or right on the screen.
5. The numeric keypad is used to type numbers easily.
6. The indicator lights are turned on when the toggle keys are used. An example
of a toggle key is the Caps Lock.

Position of the Hands on the Keyboard

When Using the keyboard, our four (4) fingers on each hand are placed on
the home keys.
These keys are called home keys because we will always place our fingers
on these keys and return to them when typing. This is the same as our home when
we go to places, we will begin from return to our home.

The home keys are all in one (1) row.

Microsoft Paint
Microsoft Paint is a program that is included in all versions of Windows
operating system from Microsoft. It is used as a drawing, coloring, and painting
tool. We can make simple drawings and do basic image editing.

Microsoft Paint Launch
To open Microsoft program in Windows 10 operating system, let us do the
following steps:
1. Select the Start button on the taskbar.

2. Choose All apps option from the start menu.

3. Scroll down to the Windows Accessories folder

4. Select the folder to display the different options.

5. Choose the Paint option.

When the Microsoft Paint Program opens, this is how its screen looks like. Look
at the image below.

For now, we may explore the Paint environment on our own. We will get to
know more of it on the next lesson.

To close the Microsoft Paint Program, let us do the following steps:
1. Select the File tab that is found on the upper left corner of the screen.
2. Choose exit
There is another way to close the Microsoft Paint program. Let as try to guess
how it is done.
We simply select the Close button found on the upper right corner of the screen.
If we made changes in our files, we will then be asked if we want to save these
changes.

For now, we do not save it yet. We will learn how to save our files in
Microsoft Paint in the succeeding lessons. Let us observed that a file created in MS
Paint is initially named Untitled.

The Microsoft Paint environment
consists of the following parts:
Title bar, Menu bar, Ribbon,
Drawing area, and Status bar.

1.Title bar

a. Paint Palette button


This is found on the leftmost part of the title bar.

When we select this, it opens a menu to Restore, Move, Size, Minimize,


Maximize, or Close options.

b. Quick Access toolbar
This contains the Save, Undo, Redo, and Customize Quick Access
Toolbar buttons.

c. File name and Program name


These show the name of our file and name of the program respectively.
When we have not yet saved our files, the default name is Untitled. In
this case, the program is Paint.

d. Minimize, Restore or Maximize, and Close buttons
These buttons are found on the rightmost part of the Title bar. Let
us try to select each button and observe what happens.
When we select the Restore button, it changes to Maximize button.
When we select the Maximize button, it will bring back the Restore
button.

When we select the Minimize button, it hides the window of a
program. When we select the Close button, it will exit the program.

This has three (3) items on the left : File, Home and View tabs, and two (2)
items on the right part: Minimize the Ribbon and Paint Help buttons.

This give us the following options:

This contains the Ribbon. Most of the commands and tools we will use are
grouped together in the Ribbon.

The Ribbon contains the following groups:


 Clipboard group
This has three (3) options : Cut, Copy, and Paste. The Cut and Copy
buttons will only be ready if we select an item in our drawing. The paste
button, however, is always active.

 Image group
This has four (4) buttons : Select, Crop, Resize, and Rotate images.

 Tools group

This contains the following tools : Pencil, Fill with Color, Text, Eraser,
Color Picker, and Magnifier.

 Brushes group
This contains different brushes that allows us to paint in various widths
and textures.

 Shapes group
This allows us to insert ready-made shapes such as lines, rectangles,
circles, triangles, arrows, stars, and all outs. We can also select the Shape
Outline ang Shape Fill option.

 Size group
This sets the width for the selected tool.

 Colors group
This allows us to set the color for the selected tool. It consists of four (4)
parts : Color 1 that is the foreground color. Color 2 that is background
color, Color Palette, and Edit Colors button.

 View tab
This contains the different viewing options. It has the following groups :
Zoom, Show or hide and Display.

 Zoom group
This contains the Zoom In, Zoom Out, and the 100% Zoom options. If
we want to get a closer view of our drawing, we use the Zoom In Tool. If
we want to get a distant view of our drawing, we use the Zoom Out Tool.
The 100% Zoom button is used to display our drawing to its normal view.

 Show or hide group


This group allows us to display or hide the Rulers, Gridlines, and
Status bar by checking and unchecking these options. Let us try to check or
uncheck each option and observe what happens.

 Display group

This is used to view our drawing. It has two (2) options; Full screen options
to view out drawing on the whole screen, and Thumbnail option to be
available when our drawing is zoomed in.

d. Minimize the Ribbon button


This shows the tab names on the Ribbon. It will then change to Expand the
Ribbon button to show the Ribbon.

e. Paint Help button


This is used when we need help in using Paint.

3. Drawing area
This is the large white blank space where we draw and paint. It is like the
canvas of a real painter where he or she creates his or her painting.

4. Status bar

This is found at the bottom part of the paint window. It displays useful
information that helps us as we work with our drawing. The Status bar shows
the cursor position, the selection size, the image size, the disk size, and the
zoom slider. We will get to know more each of these when we start drawing.

A. Straight Lines

Below are examples of straight lines in different textures, sizes, and colors.

Straight lines may be horizontal, vertical. diagonal, or zigzag. The Line tool allows
us to draw straight lines.

To draw straight lines :
1. From the home tab, go to the Shapes group.
2. Select the line tool.
3. On the line side of the Shapes group, select the Outline Button. Choose the
desired outline or texture for the line.
4. Select the size button, then choose the desired thickness.
5. To change the color of the line, select the color 1 button, then choose a color
from the color Palette.
6. Move the pointer to the drawing area,
7. To draw the line, select and drag he pointer. We may do it horizontally,
vertically, or diagonally.
8. To draw a perfect horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, hold down the shift key
while dragging.
9. Release the mouse button when the line we want is drawn.

B. Curved Lines

A curved line is a type of line that bends. The Curve Tool allows us to draw
curved lines.
Found below are examples of curved lines in different textures, sizes, and
colors.

To draw curved lines :


1. From the Home tab, go to the Shapes group.
2. Select the Curve Tool.
3.On the right side of the Shapes group, select the Outline button. Choose the
desired outline or texture for the curve line.
4. Select the button, then choose the desired line thickness.
5. To change the color of the curved line, select the Color Palette.
6. Move the pointer to the drawing area.
7. Draw a straight line by clicking and dragging the pointer. We may do it
horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
8. Click where we want one (1) arc of the curve to be, and then drag the pointer to
adjust the curve. Release the mouse button when the arc we want is formed. Repeat
this step for a second arc.

A. To draw circles and ovals, let us o the following steps:


1. From the Home tab, go to the shapes group.

3. On the right side of the Shapes group, select the outline button. Choose the
desired outline or textured for the shape.
4. Select the Fill button. Choose the desired type of fill that we want for the shape.
5. Select the Size button, then choose the desired thickness of the outline of the
shape.
6. To change the color of the shape’s outline, select the Color 1 button, then choose
a color from the color Palette.
7. To change the fill color of the shape, select the Color 2 button, then choose a
color from the color Palette.
8. Move the pointer to the drawing area.
9. To draw the article or oval, select and drag the pointer diagonally either upward
or downward. Release the mouse button when the shape we want is formed.
10. To draw a perfect circle, hold down the Shift key while dragging. Release the
mouse button when the shape want is formed.

B. To draw rectangles and squares, let us do the following steps:


1. From the Home tab, go to the Shapes group
2. Click the Rectangle tool.
3. On the right side of the Shapes group, select the Outline button. Choose the
desired outline or texture for the shape.
4. Select the Fill button. Choose the desired type of fill that we want for the shape.
5. Select the Size button, then choose the desired thickness of the outline shape.
6. To change the color of the shape’s outline, select the Color 1 button, then choose
a color from the Color Palette.
7. To change the fill color of the shape, select the Color 2 button, then choose a
color from the Color Palette.
8. Move the pointer to the drawing area.
9. To draw the rectangle or square, select and drag the pointer diagonally either
upward or downward. Release the mouse button when the shape we want is
formed.
10. To draw a perfect square, hold down the Shift key while dragging. Release the
mouse button when the shape we want is formed.
We may also use the Rounded Rectangle tool to draw rectangles and
squares. However, when we use this tool, the rectangles or squares will have
rounded corners instead of sharp corners.

Drawing Other Shapes


We may draw in Microsoft Paint other shapes such as triangles, arrows, stars,
hearts, and many more.

To draw other shapes, we simply follow the same steps as we draw circles,
ovals, rectangles, or squares. We just have to be sure that we you use the
appropriate tool for the shape that we want.

Using the Pencil, Fill with Color, and Text Tools

1. Pencil Tool
The Pencil tool is used to draw a free-form line. It works like a real pencil we
use for writing and drawing. It is our basic drawing tool in Microsoft Paint.
Let us think at any figure that we want to draw using the Pencil tool.
Look at the drawing of a tree below. An we draw a tree using the Pencil tool?

To use the Pencil tool, let us do the following steps:


1. From the Home tab, go to the Tools group
2. Select the Pencil tool.
3. Select the size button, then choose the desired thickness for the width of free-
form line.
4. To change the color of the pencil’s line, select the Color 1 button, then choose a
color from the color Palette.
5. Move the pointer to the drawing area. The pointer will change into a pencil.
6. Select and drag the pointer to draw with the pencil. Release the mouse button
every time we draw each line of the figure.

2. Fill with Color Tool


Colors add life to our drawings. We use the Fill with Color tool to fill any
shape or closed area with a single solid color.

Look at the drawing below. We will see that it has colors using the Fill with
Color tool.

To use the Fill with Color tool, do the following steps:


1. From Home tab, go to the Tools group.
2. Select the Fill with Color tool.
3. To select a color, select the Color 1 button, then choose a color from the Color
Palette.
4. Move the pointer to the drawing area. The pointer now looks like a spilling paint
bucket.
5. Place the pointer inside the closed area where we want to apply our chosen color.
6. Click the mouse.

3.Text Tool
Adding text to our drawing make it easier for us to understand what our
drawing is all about. We can use Text tool to name, label, describe, or explain our
drawing.
Look at the drawing below. It includes a text saying “Our Home.” It is clearer that
what we drew is our home.

The Text tool allows us to insert text into our drawing. To use the Text tool,
let us do the following steps:
1.From the Home tab, go to the Tools group.
2. Select the Text tool.
3. Move the pointer to the drawing area. Observe that the pointer becomes an I-
beam pointer.
4. Select and drag the pointer diagonally downwards to create a text frame.
5. Observe that the Text tab has been added to the Menu bar. The Ribbon now
contains the text tools.
6. Select the Font Family button found in the Font group to choose the font type we
want for our text.
7. Set the size of our text by selecting the Font Size button in the Font group.
8. Choose the font style for our text by selecting one (1) of the options in the Font
group. It may be Bold, Italic, Underline, or Strikethrough.
9. Choose Transparent if we want to have a transparent background for the text.
10. To change the color of the text, select the Color 1 button, then choose a color
from the Color Palette.
11. Choose Opaque if we want to have a colored background for the text.
12. To change the background color of the text, select the Color 2 button, then
chooses a color from the Color Palette.
13. Select inside the text frame. Type our text.
14. When done, we select outside the text frame.

Using the Eraser, Color Picker, and Magnifier Tools

Eraser tool
This tool is used to remove parts of the active layer or selection. It can be
useful when working with multi-layered images as portions of an upper layer

The Eraser works by marking areas of the layer as being transparent.

To use the Eraser tool, let us do the following steps :

1. From the Home tab, go to the Tools group.

2. Select the Eraser tool.

Color Picker Tool

The Color Picker tool is used to pick up and match any color in our
drawing or picture. We pick a color from the picture and we use it for drawing.

To use the Color Picker tool, let us do the following steps:

1. From the Home tab, go to the Tools group.

2. Select the Color Picker tool.

3. Move the pointer to the drawing area. The pointer becomes a dropper.

4. Pick the Color from the area of our drawing that we want to copy by selecting
the painter on it.

5. The color of the area we selected will now become the foreground color for our
next selected tool. Select the area where we want to apply the color we copied.

Magnifier Tool

The Magnifier Tool is used to change the magnification for a part o the
drawing. It enables the Zoom tool.

To use the Magnifier Tool, let us do the following steps :


1. From the Home tab, go to the Tools group.

2.Select the Magnifier tool.

3.Move the pointer o the drawing area. The pointer changes into a magnifying glass
with a rectangle around it.

4.To zoom in, select the part of the drawing for a closer view. To zoom out, right-
click the part of the drawing for a more distant view.

5.To disable the Zoom tool, just select again the Magnifier tool from the Tools
group.

To cut an image on our drawing area, let us do the following steps:

1. From the Home tab, go to the Image group.

5. Go to the Clipboard group.

6. Select the Cut button.

7. The selected part of the image will be removed.

To copy an image on our drawing area, let us do the following steps:

3. Choose the selection tool that we will use.

4. Drag the mouse to select the area of the image that we will copy.

5. Go to the Clipboard group.

6. Select the Copy button.

This will be used when we paste the image on another area of our drawing. We

To paste an image on our drawing area, let us do the following steps:

1. Choose the area on our drawing where we want to paste the copied image.

2. From the Home tab, go to the clipboard group.

3. Select the Paste button.

The copied part of the image is pasted on another part of the drawing area.

To paste an image from any file on our drawing area, let us do the following
steps:

2. Select the Paste button.

3. Choose the Paste From option.

4. The Paste From dialog box will be displayed. Select the image file name from
the required folder. Select the Open button.

5.The selected image will be pasted over the drawing area.

Image Tools
The image group tools allow us to crop, resize, and rotate things.

To crop an image on our drawing area, let us do the following steps:

3.Choose the section tool that we will use.

4.Drag the mouse to select the area of the area of the image that we will crop.

5. Select the Crop button.

The selected part of the image will be cropped as shown on the next page.

To resize an image on our drawing area, let us do the following steps:

1. From the Home tab, go to the Image group.

2. Select the Resize button.

3. The Resize and Skew dialog box will be displayed. Choose the Percentage or
Pixels. Change the values we want for the image.

The image is resized with the given values (50-Horizontal and 50-Vertical).
To rotate an image on our drawing area, let us do the following steps:

1. From the Home tab, go to the Image group.

2. Select the Rotate button.

3.Choose the Rotate option that we want for the image.

4.The image is rotated depending on the direction we choose.
