Abstract The collection of Calliphoridae during the surveys on flies of medical and forensic
importance in Thailand from 1975 to 2010 is dealt with. A total 27 genera and 93 species of the
blow flies are listed. Thirty species including Calliphora vicina ROBINEAU-DESVOIDY are newly
recorded from Thailand. One new species of the genus Isomyia WALKER is described and
illustrated, which is similar to Isomyia nebulosa (TOWNSEND, 1917) from Assam, India and
Lower Burma. Revised keys to the Thai species are provided to include the new and newly
recorded ones.
Introduction
The adults of calliphorid flies are often known to be of great medical, veterinary due to
their roles in myiasis and disseminating several pathogens that cause illness in human and
livestock (GREENBERG, 1973; ZUMPT, 1965). Additionally, larvae of calliphorid flies were
scavengers that consume carrion (CHEN et al., 2004). They play an important role in the
ecosystem by contributing to the decomposition of dead animal remains. Moreover, calliphorid
flies are also important for forensic entomology because they are usually the first insect to come
in contact corpse. Therefore, the evidences from calliphorid flies can be commonly used for
estimating post mortem interval (PMI) of the corpse, investigating manner or location of death
(CATTS & GOFF, 1992). However, very little information is available for the family
Calliphoridae except for a revisional study on 42 species of the calliphorid flies (TUMRASVIN et
al., 1979) and descriptions of six new species from Thailand (KURAHASHI & TUMRASVIN,
1979). Some records of several species were scattered in the subfamilies Calliphoirinae
(TUMRASVIN, KURAHASHI & KANO, 1976), Luciliinae (TUMRASVIN, KURAHASHI & KANO,
1977), Ameniinae (TUMRASVIN & KANO, 1977), Polleniinae (KURAHASHI, 1995) and Rhiniinae
(SENIOR-WHITE et al., 1940; JAMES, 1977; TUMRASVIN & KANO, 1977; KURAHASHI, 1995).
During the field survey of the “Zoogeographical Studies on the Medically Important
Diptera in Southeast Asia”, the first author made an excellent collection of the blow flies in
1975 although this would be covered only a part of whole fauna, indeed. We had several
opportunities to examine the preserved materials in the museums whose names are indicated in
( ) in the list of species below. Recently we also tried to collect flies in different localities and
various habitats in order to make a good series of reference collections for understanding the
entire fly fauna of Thailand. The collected samples were mounted with insect pins in good
order. All specimens were sorted into subfamilies. In the course of our taxonomical studies, we
238 Hiromu KURAHASHI and Nophawan BUNCHU
have examined a total 27 genera and 93 species of Thai blow flies. Of 93 species, we found one
species new to science which belongs to the genus Isomyia WALKER. The new species is similar
to Isomyia nebulosa (TOWNSEND, 1917) from Assam, India and lower Burma, but easily can be
distinguished from it by the subholoptic frons in male and characteristic male genitalia having
cerci fused with each other. Morphologically this new species is included in the dotata species-
group of PERIS (1950) which is characteristic in having subcostal vein next to humeral cross
vein setulose below. Adult flies of type material were collected on blossoms. Thirty species are
new to Thailand. Their names are preceded by asterisk (*) except for the new species in the
annotated checklist of Thai Calliphoridae. This checklist includes the species previously
recorded and examined during surveys. The previous keys (TUMRASVIN, 1979) to Thai species
are revised to include the new and newly recorded ones herein the present paper. The keys in the
present paper include some exotic species which have been recorded from Malaysia
(KURAHASHI et al., 1997). They have not yet recorded from Thailand but will be most probably
found by future surveys in the peninsular part of Thailand. Species all are rearranged by the
modern systematics of subfamilies and new generic combinations (FAN, 1965; ROGNES, 1997;
PAPE & ARNAUD, 2001). Identified specimens in our collection were mostly deposited in the
Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo (NSMT). Some were shared and transferred into the
collection of several museums such as the Bishop Museum, Honolulu (BPBM); Carnegie
Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh (CMNH); Natural History Museum, London (BMNH).
Names of museum are indicated in [>] in the list of species below.
We tried to analyze the blow fly fauna of Thailand. Most fly species seem to be so-called
Oriental elements (79 %), and then Palaearctic (2%), pantropical or cosmopolitan (2%) and
Afrotropical ones (1%). Fourteen species (16%) including one new species seem to be endemic
in Thailand and its adjacent areas.
Abbreviations for institutions housing specimens are as follows:BPBM, Bishop Museum,
Honolulu; CAS, California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco; DMPN, Department of
Microbiology and Parasitology, Naresuan University, Phitsanulok; DPCM, Department of
Parasitology, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai; NIID, Reference Museum, Department of
Medical Entomology, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo; IRScNB, Zoological
Institute, Louvain; MUTM, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok;
NSMT, National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo; PCHB, Personal collection of Hans
BAENZIGER, Chiang Mai University; UM, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur; ZMUC,
Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen. Locality names of specimens examined are
cited as shown on the label of specimen. Terminology mainly follows SENIOR-WHITE et al.
(1940) and measurement of frons was made in a similar manner to FAN (1965). Frons index is
the same as FAN’s index of frons.

Etymology. The specific name is named in honour of the late Dr. Watanasak
TUMRASVIN, Department of Medical Entomology, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol
University, Bangkok, who was the first local entomologist studied the Thai blow flies.
Type depository. Holotype, 6♂ paratypes, NSMT type series NSMT–I–Dip 6765–6771
deposited in National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo; 1♂ paratype in Department
of Parasitology, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai; 1♂ in Reference Museum,
Department of Medical Entomology, NIH Thailand, Bangkok.
Remarks. This new species is similar to Isomyia nebulosa (TOWNSEND, 1917) from
Assam, India and Lower Burma, but can be distinguished from it by the subholoptic frons
in ♂ and characteristic male genitalia having cerci fused with each other.
Bionomics. Adult male flies were collected on blossoms.
Distribution. Thailand.
