Strategies for Maintaining English Speaking Environment in the Mahavidyalaya

As an English-medium academic institution, the Mahavidyalaya family has always been striving
to maintain English speaking environment, particularly for communication among the students.
As per the decisions made on this agendum in the department meeting of the Mahavidyalaya
English Department held on 3rd Asar, 2080, the following strategies are going to be adopted for
English Speaking Environment.
1. English Speaking Campaign: To make the students and teachers habitual to speaking English
an English-speaking campaign will be conducted in the Mahavidyalaya. For this, all the
teachers and staff members will mandatorily communicate with the students in English in the
Mahavidyalaya premises. The mahavidyalaya administration will notify and monitor the
teaching and non-teaching staff members about the same.
Note: Every, Wednesday will be dedicated for the Nepali Language
2. Appointment of English langue monitors: To motivate and monitor the students to speak
English among themselves, English Langue Monitors (a boy and a girl) will be appointed in
each section of all grades. English-I teachers of each class will select the suitable candidates.
Each monitor will wear ‘Speak English’ badges for their identification. Various appointment
holders of each grade will be the language monitors by default.
3. Display of ‘Speak English’ Placard: To constantly remind students and staff members that
they have to speak English, ‘Speak Correct English’ Placard will be pasted on the classrooms
and various places of the Mahavidyalaya where students have their access.
4. Speaking Classes: Special English speaking classes will be held every Friday in grades 6 and
7. These classes will be held during the regular English classes on Fridays where students
will be engaged on speaking activities. Teachers can conduct various competitions among
students and award them as well.
5. Five-minute speech: Students from 6-10 will participate in a five minute speech in their
English classes. The topics of speech and speech scheduled will be published by the
respective English teachers. Students’ speech will be marked and evaluated by the respective
English teachers for their speaking test, a part of internal evaluation of English.
6. Recommendation of Literature Reader: To enhance students’ reading habits, students of
grade 6-9 will be encouraged to read various literature books. Students will be provided the
recommendation list of books. They will buy at least a book during and outing and exchange
books among themselves. The English Language teachers monitor this and ascertain students’
reading. Book Review presentation and Book Talk Show will be organized among students to
motivate students.
7. Enhancement of English Language Lab: To enhance the English language learning English
Language Lab has been playing a vital role in the Mahavidyalaya. To update and modernize
it, computer software will be developed in the support of the IT Department.
8. Further Recommendation: It is advisable that all the members of the Mahavidyalaya who
have to directly communicate with students should learn basic communication skills in
English. The Mahavidyalaya should run support classes to the staff members and army
personnel who need to learn the English Language.
