1.0 SCOPE

The technical requirements in this specification are supplement to ANSI/API SPEC 5L-
2007(44th version), and shall be used with ANSI/API SPEC 5L-2007(44th version),
Specification for Line Pipe.
This technical specification is for BNS SAWL piping material where they are served in sour
service condition and the nominal diameter is larger than 20 inch.
This specification defines the minimum technical requirements for BNS SAWL steel pipe
and pipes provided by manufacturer shall at least comply with the requirements of this
specification.

2.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENT

Any clauses and contents not covered by this specification for steel pipe used in sour work
condition shall meet the requirements in ANSI/API SPEC 5L-2007(44th version).
Any nonconformance of this specification with ANSI/API SPEC 5L-2007(44th version)
shall be implemented as per more stringent regulations.
Substantive deviation to this specification and ANSI/API SPEC 5L-2007(44th version) by
manufacturer is not allowed, except getting the permission of the owner.

4.0 MATERIAL

4.1 Material

Material: API 5LPSL2-BNS–SAWL (UOE)

4.2 Delivery

BNS steel pipes shall be delivered in normalized condition status.


Normalizing heat treatment shall be for every length BNS SAWL steel pipe.

4.3 Traceability

The manufacturer shall establish and follow documented procedures for maintaining the
heat identity and the test-unit identity for all such pipe, such procedures shall provide
means for tracing any length of pipe to the proper test unit and the related chemical and
mechanical test results.

5.0 TECHNICAL CONDITION

5.1 Material

5.1.1 Strip and plate used for the manufacture of SAWL welded pipe shall be rolled from
continuously cast (strand cast) or pressure cast slabs.
5.1.2 Strip and plate used for the manufacture of SAWL welded shall be inspected visually
after rolling. Visual inspection of strip used for the manufacture of welded pipe may be
either of the uncoiled strip or of the coil edges.
5.1.3 Such strip and plate shall be inspected ultrasonically for laminar imperfections or
mechanical damage in accordance with Annex K, ANSI/API SPEC 5L-2007(44th version),
Specification for Line Pipe, either before or after cutting the strip or plate, or the completed
pipe shall be subjected to full-body inspection, including ultrasonic inspection.
5.1.4 Intermittent tack welding of the SAWL groove shall not be used, unless the
purchaser has approved data furnished by the manufacturer to demonstrate that all
mechanical properties specified for the pipe are obtainable at both the tack weld and
intermediate positions.
5.1.5 Steel material used for pipe must be killed and made according to fine grain practice.
Macroscopic test shall be performed to finished pipe according to ASTM E381. Defects
such as visible white spot, crack and air hole are not allowed on acid dipping test piece of
steel pipe cross-section. Crystal grain size shall be evaluated as original austenite grain

size according to ASTM E112. The average original crystal grain size of steel pipe base
metal shall be no less than Class 10.
5.1.6 Non-metallic inclusions with Class A, B, C or D in steel pipeline shall not be above
Class 2 respectively and the sum of non-metallic inclusions shall not be above Class
4.The measurement of non-metallic inclusion shall be performed according to ISO4967 or
ASTM E45.
5.1.7 The strip used for the manufacture of BNS pipe shall not contain any repair welds.
5.1.8 Any lubricant that contaminates the weld bevel or the surrounding areas shall be
removed before making the longitudinal seam of SAWL pipes.

5.2 Chemical Composition

Chemical composition of steel (product analysis) shall comply with the requirements of

Note:
1. Cu content shall be no more than 0.10%

5.3 Mechanical Properties

For tensile tests, CVN impact tests, DWT tests, guided-bend tests, hardness tests, HIC
tests and SSC tests, the samples shall be taken, and the corresponding test pieces
prepared, in accordance with the applicable reference standard.
Samples and test pieces for the various test types shall be taken from locations as shown
in figure 1.

5.3.1 Tensile Test
The tensile test shall be performed in accordance with ASTM A370 or ISO 6892 and the
test pieces orientations and locations shall be according to figure 1.The results of tensile
test of steel pipe shall comply with table 2. Weld joint test pieces shall be transverse
sample and seam weld is the centre of the sample, weld beads may be ground flush and
local imperfections may be removed.

5.3.2 Impact Test


The impact test shall be performed in accordance with ASTM A370 and the test pieces
orientations and locations shall be according to figure 1 and figure 2.The notch impact
samples of the weld seam and HAZ shall be taken as figure 2.

The sample shall be V-notch and the test temperature shall be 0 . For the full size test,
the required minimum average (set of three test pieces) absorbed energy values
(transverse direction) for no matter pipe body or weld seam and HAZ shall be 40J.

The required Individual test values for any test piece shall be 75% of the required
minimum average (of a set of three test pieces) absorbed energy values.
If sub-size test pieces are used, the required minimum average (set of three test pieces)
absorbed energy values shall be the required values for full-size test pieces times the ratio
of the specified width of the sub-size test piece to the specified width of the full-size test
piece, with such derived values rounded to the nearest joule.
5.3.3 Guided-bend test
The guided-bend test shall be performed in accordance with ASTM A370 or ISO 8491 and
the test pieces orientations and locations shall be according to figure 1.
The test pieces shall not:
a. fracture completely
b. reveal any cracks or ruptures in the weld metal longer than 3.2mm, regardless of
depth, or
c. reveal any cracks or ruptures in the parent metal, HAZ or fusion line longer than
3.2mm or deeper than 12.5% of the specified wall thickness.
5.3.4 Drop-Weight Tear (DWT) test

DWT test pieces shall be prepared in accordance with API RP 5L3. The test temperature

shall be -10 , and the samples shall be taken from the pipe body. For each test (of a set

of two test pieces), the average shear fracture area shall be 85%.

5.4 Hardness Test

The hardness test shall be performed in accordance with ASTM E92 and ASTM A370.The
hardness points for weld seam and HAZ shall be measured as figure 3.

Hardness test shall be carried out to steel pipe, and the maximum hardness at any
position shall be not higher than 220HV10.

5.5 Anti-corrosion Performance Test

SSC and HIC test shall be carried out to pipeline according to the following requirements.
5.5.1 Anti-HIC test
Product certificate test shall be carried out to the first heat from the former 3 heat steels
and every 10 heats latter.
NACE TM0284-2003 shall be adopted.
Test solution: solution A.
Test duration: 96 hours.
The average value of three sections of each test specimen shall not exceed the following
index.

Crack sensitivity rate(CSR)≤2%.

The number and area of hydrogen blister on the surface of test specimen shall be reported
with macrograph or drawings of all cracks.
Photos or drawings of hydrogen blister on the surface of test piece shall be attached to the
test report.
5.5.2 Anti-SSC test
Product certificate test shall be carried out to the first heat from the former 3 heat steels
and every 10 heats latter with the same heat treatment process.
Four-point bending test specimen shall be adopted as per ISO 7539-2 or ASTM G39 and
test be carried out according to NACE TM0177-2005.
Test solution: NACE TM0177 solution A.

Stress to be loaded in the test: 90%SMYS specified minimum yield strength . )
Test duration: 720 hours.
Acceptance index: stretching plane of test specimen to be inspected by low power
microscope under 10 times magnifying, and shall have no cracking or breaking fracture.
Manufacturer shall have at least 2 years experiences of applying steel pipe in acid service
similar to this project, which are recognized by the Owner.

5.6 Inspection Requirements

100% NDT and 100% hydrostatic test shall be carried out to steel pipe.
5.6.1 Nondestructive test
Nondestructive test shall be carried out according to the operation specified in Annex-K
and Annex-E of ANSI/API SPEC 5L-2007(44th version) which are suitable to SAWL pipe.
Ultrasonic lamination imperfection inspection shall be carried out within the range of 100
mm from pipe end of each pipe. Lamination imperfection that ≥6mm on circumferential
direction with an area above 100mm2 is not acceptable.
Surface of the bevel shall be performed with lamination imperfection inspection using
magnetic particle according to ISO13664; Imperfection that ≥6mm on circumferential
direction is not allowed.
Blind area without inspection is not allowed for each steel pipe.
Imperfection of pipe body with individual or lamination density exceeding the allowable
acceptance standard for acid service specified is not allowed. Specific technical
requirements are as follows:

a. the maximum imperfection area of edges is the product of the maximum imperfection length, where length is
the dimension parallel to the material edge and the transverse dimension. An imperfection is considered to be
larger than the maximum imperfection size if either the length or the transverse dimension is exceeded.

5.6.2 Hydrostatic test


Hydrostatic test shall be carried out in factory to all steel pipes. The hydrostatic test
pressure shall be determined according to API Spec 5L 10.2.6.5 and 10.2.6.6. Pressure
shall be held for a period of 10s, during which leakage shall not occurred to steel pipe.
Records made by automatic hydrostatic recorder shall be available.

5.7 Dimension Requirements

5.7.1 Cold sizing


The SAWL pipe shall be cold expanded-diameter through mechanical method. The sizing
ratio for cold-sized pipe shall not be 0.003 to 0.015.
The sizing ratio Sr shall be derived using the following equation

5.7.2 Diameter tolerance

For BNS SAWL pipe with OD 508mm, the diameter tolerance of pipe except the end

end shall be less than 0.02D and the out-of-roundness tolerance of pipe end shall be less
than 0.015D.
5.7.3 Wall thickness tolerance

When the wall thickness is less than 5.0mm, the wall thickness tolerance is 0.5mm.
When the wall thickness is larger than 5.0mm but less than 15.0mm, the wall thickness

When the wall thickness is larger than 15.0mm, the wall thickness tolerance is 1.5mm.
5.7.4 Length of supply
The length of pipe for straight pipe shall be 11.5m ±0.5m. It is not allowed to adopt
circumferential weld to connect pipelines.
5.7.5 Straightness
The deviation of steel pipe straight degree is less than and equal to 0.2% of whole length
of steel pipe, spot straight degree should be less than 4.0mm/m.
5.7.6 Processing of end of pipelines
5.7.6.1 All the end of pipelines should be divided into right angle, and no bad burr. The
divided diagonal level is less than 1.6mm. See figure 4.

5.7.6.2 Unless otherwise specified, the bevels at the weld ends shall be as per ASME
B16.25. These bevels shall be machined on all cut pipe ends.

5.8 Tolerances for the weld seam

5.8.1 Radial offset
The maximum permissible radial offset for SAWL pipe is as per the following:
When the wall thickness is less than 15mm, the maximum permissible radial offset is
1.5mm;
When the wall thickness is larger than 15mm but less than 25mm, the maximum
permissible radial offset is 0.1t (t is the wall thickness);
When the wall thickness is larger than 25mm, the maximum permissible radial offset is
2.5mm.
5.8.2 Height of the weld bead /reinforcement
For SAWL pipes, the following shall apply:
Except at undercuts, the crown surfaces of the as-deposited inside and outside weld
beads shall not be below the adjacent pipe surface.
Weld beads shall blend in smoothly with the adjacent pipe surface.
For a distance of at least 100mm from each pipe end, the inside weld bead shall be
removed by grinding such that it does not extend above the adjacent pipe surface by more
than 0.5mm. for the remainder of the pipe, the inside weld bead shall not extend above the
adjacent pipe surface by more than the applicable value given in table 4.
The outside weld bead shall not extend above the adjacent pipe surface by more than the
applicable value given in table 4
For a distance of at least 150mm from each pipe end, the outside weld bead shall be
removed by grinding such than it does not extend above the adjacent pipe surface by
more than 0.5mm.

The maximum misalignment of the weld beads shall not exceed 3mm for pipe with
≤ >
specified wall thickness t 20mm or 4mm for pipe with specified wall thickness 20mm.

5.9 Delivered Weight

Steel pipes shall be delivered according to theoretical weight, and the deviation between
practical weight and theoretical weight must be controlled within -3.5%~+10%.
Anything not stated of steel pipelines should be in accordance with the rules of the latest
ANSI/API SPEC 5L-2007(44th version).

6.0 MANUFACTURING AND SUPERVISION

During the period of pipe manufacturing, purchaser is entitled to assign inspector to the
plant for pipe inspection and acceptance, and is entitled to reject pipeline which fails to
meet requirements.
If necessary, representative assigned by purchaser shall perform spot-check for
production to guarantee consistency with standard and this agreement.
Manufacturer of pipeline shall allow representative assigned by purchaser to perform
inspection and spot-check to test record and test specimen during the period of pipeline
manufacturing.

7.0 TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE MEASURES

The outside surface of steel pipe is without any coating and lubricating. Pipeline requiring
bevel machining shall be equipped with bevel protector. Steel pipe size shall be identified
piece by piece according to practical dimension.

8.0 STORAGE AND TRANSPORATION

Steel pipe shall be supported during stacking to avoid deformation. Supplier shall be
responsible for the protection of steel pipe during storage. Supplier shall be subject to
regulation of steel pipe storage specified by purchaser during bidding.
Steel pipe transportation shall be performed according to the latest version of API RP
5LI and API RP 5LW Recommended Practice for Pipeline Inland and Offshore Marine
Transportation. Steel pipe with different size and wall thickness shall be packaged
separately.

9.0 DOCUMENTATION

Supplier shall submit relevant documents according to requirements of the standard.


Following documents shall be submitted to purchaser.
Bidding stage
● Quality control plan
Including: experience of this product in similar sulfur-contained gas field (more than 2
years);
● Other technical documents
Supplier shall submit 5 copies of final documents when delivery, including:
● NDT report;
● Factory Hydrostatic Test Report;
● Mechanical Properties Report;
● HIC Test Report;
● SSC Test Report;
● DWT Test Report;
● Impact Test Report;
● Tensile Test Report.

10.0 OTHERS

After manufacture procedure is determined, the manufacturer shall provide pipe samples
in advance to the purchaser for weld process performance test.
