1.0 GENERAL
1.1 Purpose
This specification covers the minimum requirements for design and materials of
platforms, stairs, ladders and handrailings.
1.2.1 Definitions

3.1 General
Vendor shall meet or exceed the requirements of the latest edition of the following codes,
regulations and standards, except as superseded herein. In cases where more than one
code, regulation or standard apply to the same condition, the most stringent shall be
followed. In the event of a conflict between this specification and other specifications or
correspondence, the COMPANY shall be consulted and a ruling, in writing, shall be
obtained before any work is started.
The following General Specifications shall be used in conjunction with this specification where
applicable:
Any deviation from this specification must be approved, in writing, by COMPANY. Such written
approval must be obtained prior to the commencement of any work which would constitute such
a deviation.
4.0 GENERAL
4.1 Workmanship
Work shall be carried out in accordance with code requirements and industry standards
for good workmanship.
5.1 General
5.1.1 Platforms shall be provided according to the corresponding code to ensure the
security and convenience during the productive activities.
5.1.2 All operating platforms which area is more than 50m2 or which length is more than
8m shall have two means of access.
5.2 Widths
5.2.1 The clear width in front of inspection or service handholds and manholes shall not
be less than 900 mm. Exchanger platforms shall have a clear width of not less than 900
mm.
5.2.3 The clear width of platforms for servicing other parts of equipment shall not be less
than 750 mm.
Connecting walkways shall not be less than 700 mm.
5.2.5 Minimum platform size is 760 x 760 mm.
5.3 Flooring
5.4 Clearances
5.4.1 The back of inner platform kickplates shall clear uninsulated equipment by 75 mm
and insulated equipment by 25 mm.
5.4.2 Platforms servicing manholes shall not be more than 750 mm below the bottom of
the manhole flange.
5.4.3 The minimum headroom over platforms and walkways shall not be less than 2100
mm and shall be measured to the lowest point of overhead structural framing, piping or
equipment.
5.4.4 Where platforms connect between two vessels, provision shall be made for
unequal expansion of the vessels.
5.4.5 Top head platforms on vessels shall have a minimum 900 mm clearance between
edges of flanges and the outer edge of platform to provide working area around all
flanges.
5.4.6 Platforms serving manways shall be sized to permit 180°opening of covers without
interference with structure or guard railing.

6.1 General
6.2 Stairs
6.2.1 Stairways shall have a minimum width of 750 mm; a minimum run of 200 mm; a
maximum riser of 200 mm; and the maximum vertical distance between landings shall
be 3700 mm.
6.2.2 The width of treads and height of rise shall be uniform throughout the length of any
stairway and the treads shall be level.
6.2.3 All stairway runs on the same structure shall have, if possible, the same slope,
preferably nine verticals to twelve horizontals.
6.2.4 The stairway slope shall be between 30°and 55°as measured from the horizontal.
6.2.5 Stairway handrails shall be continuous with landing and platform handrails.
6.2.6 Stairs shall have grating treads 32 mm x 5 mm with bearing bars and checkered
plate nosing.
6.2.7 All stairs shall have rounded nosing and shall have the same type of grating as the
surrounding area and of the same quality and design.
6.2.8 Stair landings shall not be less than 750 mm in the direction of the stairway.
6.2.9 All grating shall be finishing by hot-dip galvanized (ANSI /NAAMM MBG 531-00)
6.3 Ladders
6.3.1 All ladders serving platforms or landings 2400 mm or more above grade shall be
equipped with safety cages.
6.3.2 Ladder runs shall be offset at a maximum of 6500 mm landing to landing.
Landings shall have minimum width and length of 760 mm. These requirements do not
apply to ladders with fall arrest devices.

6.3.3 Ladder cages shall be extended from the top to not over 2100 mm from the
landing at the bottom.

6.3.4 Ladders required to have cages shall be sidestep-off in all cases where access
and layouts permits.
6.3.5 On elevated landings or platforms when the center of the ladder is 900 mm or less
from a handrail, those longitudinal cage bars in proximity to the handrail that do not
interfere with ladder access shall be extended by field construction to the handrail.

6.3.6 6.3.7 Ladder cages shall be supplied in accordance with ANSI A14.3.
6.3.7 6.3.8 Ladders side rails shall be determined according to the space between
support point.
6.3.8 6.3.9 Ladder fall arrest devices shall not be used in lieu of cage protection except on
stacks and chimneys.
7.1 Handrailing
7.1.1 Handrailing shall extend around the edges of all platforms, landings, walkways and
stairways except at stair and ladder accesses or where the top of the floor panel is not
more than 700 mm above grade.
7.1.2 Maximum spacing on handrail posts shall be 1500 mm.
7.1.3 Bolted removable sections shall be provided where necessary to permit removal of
or access to equipment.
7.1.4 Handrail height on stairs shall be 1050 mm taken from the top of the stair tread.
7.1.5 Handrail posts shall be provided at fireproofed columns so that the railings do not
pass through the fireproofing.
7.1.6 Handrails at the bottom of stairways shall terminate at the bottom post or
completely turn and attach to the post.
7.1.7 Finished handrail shall be free of burrs and sharp edges which would cause injury
to personnel.
7.2 Kickplates
7.2.1 Kickplates shall extend continuously around the edge of all platforms, landings,
walkways and openings protected by railing except at stair and ladder accesses.
7.2.2 Kickplates shall extend around columns and shall have 25 mm minimum clearance
from column or from column fireproofing.
