drawing should be C15 but we casted with C35
13 Setting out
brickwork involves marking out the position of the bricks or blocks to be laid on a structure. Here
are the steps involved in setting out brickwork:
1. Determine the size of the brick or block you will use in the construction. The
standard size for bricks is 240mm x 120mm x 55mm.
2. Decide on the pattern in which you want to lay the bricks. Common patterns
include stretcher bond and English bond.
3. Measure the length and height of the wall to be built, and mark out these
measurements on the ground using lines and pegs.
4. Establish the thickness of the mortar joint between each brick, usually around
10mm to 12mm, and mark this out on the ground as well.
5. Starting at one corner of the marked out area, place the first brick according to
the pattern, making sure that it is level and square.
6. Continue placing bricks row by row, checking that each brick is level and straight.
Use a spirit level to ensure accuracy.
7. Once the first few rows of bricks have been laid, use a string line or a straight
edge to ensure that the wall is straight.
8. Cut bricks to size using a bolster chisel and hammer if necessary.
9. Finish the wall with the final layer of bricks or capping stones as required.
14 Safety Arrangements
The contractor Project Safety Plan shall be strictly enforced. All works shall be regularly
Page 10 of 19
monitored to ensure full compliance.
1. Contractor shall resource as appropriate the supervision of the works.
2. Permits – Where required, permits to work will be provided prior to commencement of works.
Permits shall be issued by suitably trained and experienced HSE personnel only.
3. PPE – All required PPE shall be issued. Constant monitoring and supervision of the works
shall always ensure that the appropriate PPE is worn by affected operatives.
4. Access and egress – Routine access and egress will always be provided for materials and
operatives. Where emergency routes are required. These shall be determined and arranged,
and instructions given prior to commencement of the works.
5. Contractor supervision shall ensure that all material deliveries are coordinated, and all
vehicles are parked in a position where they present no additional risk to the public or people
associated with this project. Where vehicles are offloaded from public areas, the activity shall
be supervised, and a dedicated offloading/storage area shall be provided.
6. Lighting – At all times, appropriate and suitable lighting shall be provided to ensure the works
can be undertaken in a safe and competent manner.
7. Working at height(1.8 M) – Where required, all appropriate measures shall be enforced to
ensure that operatives are afforded a safe and proper platform from which to work. Materials
will be stacked in a safe and secure manner.
8. Scaffolds shall be erected by competent operatives to an agreed design. Scaffolds shall be
inspected before use and at regular periods thereafter.
9. Housekeeping – At all times, contractor supervision shall monitor the works to reduce as far
as reasonably practical the storage of rubbish, waste materials and debris at the work face.
All waste materials shall be removed from the workplace to a suitable area.
10. Training: Contractor shall identify the needs for training and/or certification of personnel to
ensure that suitable levels of proficiency are attained and maintained to meet the specified
requirements of the project.
15 Prior Activities:
Prior to the commencement of the brick work, the following preparatory activities will be undertaken:
1. The site will be cleared of any debris and leveled as necessary.
2. The foundation will be inspected to ensure that it is level and in good condition.
3. The required quantity of bricks, cement, sand, and water will be made available on site.
4. Appropriate scaffolding or working platforms will be erected to ensure safe and efficient
access to the work area.
5. A survey and inspection on completion of structural work for structural element recording
deviations and deficiencies, if any a complete report of each building shall be submitted
to the Engineer prior to commencing building masonry assemblies on Foundation.
6. Clean the floor, under wall course of dirt using brush. Remove any slurry, laitance, leaving
a sound concrete.
7. Setting out for unit masonry work for each building in respect to coordinates from
approved shop drawing.
8. Brick testing shall be carrying out up on client request and all the test report shall be
submit accordingly.
9. Mortar mix ratio is 1: 3 (Portland cement: sand) or as specified. Gauge box shall be
utilized to obtain the specified mix.
16 Procedure:
1. Start laying the bricks from one corner using the reference lines as a guide.
2. Apply a layer of mortar to the base of the bricks and lay them in the desired pattern.
3. Use a spirit level to ensure the bricks are in a horizontal line.
4. Leave expansion joints as recommended by local code and manufacturer
specification.
5. Continue laying the bricks one course at a time, ensuring that the vertical joints are
staggered.
6. Do not place more than two courses of brickwork at a time.
7. Bricks used for masonry in cement mortar shall be soaked by immersion in water at
least one hour prior to start of actual laying. Bricks shall be laid in English bond unless
otherwise specified. Bricks on edge must not be used unless specified.
8. Work shall be true to horizontal lines and perfect plumb. Vertical joints shall be truly
vertical and those in alternate courses shall be in the same vertical line. Joints of each
course shall be within the limit of 6 mm to 10 mm depending upon the size of the
bricks.
9. Prior to start of work it must be noted and checked that bricks on top are full size
bricks. To achieve this, precautions should be taken from the start of the first layer.
Thickness of joint shall be adjusted such a way that full bricks will be there on top.
Also it must be noted that all horizontal joints on every floor are at the same level, so
as to allow proper bonding at junctions.
10. Specified cement mortar must be placed within 30 minutes after addition of water.
11. Disallow vertical joint filling by spreading mortar. For 240 mm thick wall, maintain one
face in line. This face can be preplanned to take all kinds of single coat plasters. For
higher thickness walls both faces should be in line.
12. First mark up layer of brick work needs to be laid in direct supervision for door /
window / any other openings to be kept accurately as per the drawings or layout.
13. The buttress, counter-forts should be built simultaneously, maintaining proper bond
with main wall and not added after wards.
14. Frogs shall be upward at all times. Joints shall be racked back to a minimum 10 to 15
mm while the mortar is wet. Surface of the brickwork shall be cleaned with coil string,
wire brushes etc to keep the surface free for the need operation. All dropped and
spoiled mortar, brickbats etc. Shall be cleared from the floor before work is closed for
the day.
15. Old or dry surface must be thoroughly cleaned and wetted. The joints should be raked
before starting new construction
17 Curing work
Curing will be carried out 24 hours after completion of brick masonry.
