The box below shows the solubility of some substances in water. Use this to help you answer the questions.

● All common sodium, potassium and ammonium salts are soluble.

● All nitrates are soluble.
● Most chlorides are soluble except those of silver and lead.
● Most sulfates are soluble except those of lead, barium and calcium.
● Most carbonates and hydroxides are insoluble except those of sodium, potassium and ammonium.

To prepare an insoluble salt, you need two solutions containing soluble salts:
• one solution must contain a soluble salt of the metal ion
• the other solution must contain a soluble salt of the non-metal ion.
You are going to work out how to make the insoluble salt barium sulfate, BaSO 4.
a barium chloride
Give the name of a soluble compound containing barium. ____________________________________
b Sodium sulfate
Give the name of a soluble salt containing sulfate. __________________________________________
c Write the word equation for the reaction between the two substances you have chosen in a and b.

BaCl 2 ( s ) + Na 2 SO 4 ( s ) → BaSO 4 ( s ) + 2 NaCl ( s )

Magnesium chloride solution reacts with sodium carbonate solution to form a precipitate of magnesium
carbonate and another product.
a Write the word equation for this reaction.

MgCl2+Na2CO3 -> 2NaCl+MgCO3

b Write the balanced equation for this reaction, including state symbols.

Na2CO3 + MgCl -> MgCO3 + 2NacI

The insoluble salt silver chloride, AgCl, is formed as a white precipitate by mixing silver nitrate solution,
AgNO3, with sodium chloride solution, NaCl, in a beaker.
a Give the name of the procedure to separate the silver chloride from the mixture in the beaker.

filtration

b Describe how to obtain a pure, dry sample of silver chloride after carrying out the procedure in a.

To remove these soluble impurities, the sample of silver chloride must

be washed gently using distilled water.

a balanced equation for the reaction and include state symbols.
