Detailed work on the theories of language origin.

Monogenetic Theory:

This theory states that all languages emerged from a single source. People who believe in this theory
think that in the beginning there was only one language. As people moved away from each other, each
language developed dialects which later became distinct languages. This theory has some support when
we look at language universals i.e. similarities in language.

Secondly, there is more support to this theory when we look at language relationships. There is
clear evidence that source of the languages we have today had been dialects of the same languages.

REASONS WHY

The first reason is that the theory that is not answers the question of how language came to existence.

According to the bible in Acts 2 -4. The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues
hence disapproving the theory

In the bible their many occasions seen and noted when God directly gives commands to his people and
in exodus God himself to Moses.

6. Glossogenetics

This theory focuses on the biological basis of the formation and development of the human language. It
starts with the observation that in the beginning our ancestors made the transition to an upright
posture, by bipedal (two – legged) locomotion and a revised role for the front limb. Looking at fossilized
structures of the early man, proponents of this theory associate them with the formulation of consonant
sounds. Like the evolutionists, they may account the development of man and language over a period
of thousands of years.

Reasons

I disagree with this theory because in our communities we have lame people who do speak hence
disapproving the theory

And also another reason is that there still people in society who don’t talk though they contain all the
limbs hence disagreeing with the theory

God also himself directly spoke to his people.

THE THEORIE THAT I BELIEVE ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF LANGUAGE.

1. The Divine Source:

This theory believes that language is a direct gift from God and therefore has a divine origin. The theory
states that almost in all the societies there are stories or legends, which attribute the origin of language
to God.

THE REASONS AS TO WHY I SUPPORT IT

In Gen. 2:19 – 20 where God gave Adam the task of assigning names to all the animals and plants in the
garden of Eden hence implying that language comes from God and hence a gift to humans.

In many religious beliefs, believers attach special importance to languages as a matter of serving God.
E.g. the Hindu use the Sanskrit; Moslems use Arabic, Catholics and Orthodox used Latin & Greek for a
long time.

God punishing the human presumption in building the Tower of Babel where He confused their tongues.
And they spoke in different languages. (Gen.11:1 – 9). (Acts 2:4 [1 – 13]) (Numbers 22:21 – 30), (Gen
3:1-3).

According to the Hindu tradition, language came from the goddess Sarasvati wife of Brahma who was
the creator of the universe. The Egyptians believed that the creator of speech was God Thoh;
Babylonians believed that it was God Nabu.

The above is a satisfactory that the divine source is right and well explains the origin of language
because God is the one who created everything according to the creation story
2. Polygenetic Theory;

Supporters of this theory believe that language originated from different regions at different times and
among different races. The Danish linguist Otto Jespersen groups the polygenetic theory into five
classes.

a. Bow – wow

b. Pooh – Pooh

c. Ding – dong

d. Yo – he – ho

e. La – la

REASONS FOR THE SUPPORT OF THIS THEORY

Its true that language is imitated because most items sounds and animals are named after their sounds,
their types and this is an answer that if at all those creatures never existed, they wouldn’t have obtained
names.

Forexample

A BEES ARE NAMED AFTER THE SOUNDS THEY MAKE

B SOME GESTURES ARE NAMED AFTER WHAT THEY MEAN
