This paper presents the result of our recent study on the Japanese species of

the small carpenter bee genus Ceratina Latreille. Nine species belonging to ・
three subgenera are new reported from Japan includingthe Ogasawara or Bonin i

Islands. In this paper, descriptiens ef subgenera are omitted but briefiy given in
t
the key only because they will appear in Hirashima's separate paper in detall.
All the materlal, including the holotypes of two new species, are deposited in
the collectiDn of the Entemological Laboratory,Kyushu University, unless other-

wise stated. 1

1. Subgenus CeratiRa sensu stricto
'
Orientalspecies of this subgenus, including those of Japan, have been very
poorly studied. So far as our investigation goes, there occur no Iess than a
l
dozen species in this area, rnost of them areundescribed. All ofour species are .・
black having a few pa!e rnarkings like the European cucurbitina Rossi, the type
li・ species of the genus. Four species are now found in Japan, twe of them are
new to sclence, ・

Ceratina (Ceratina)
megastigmata n. sp,

This is a very interestingspecies whose

which is still undescribed,
relative,
is found only in Formosa. It seems that these two spccies constitute
natural

the megastigmata species group in the subgenus Ceratina sensu stricto. It is

characterized ln that the propecius, or ventral free segment of the prothorax
between the head and anterior legs, isprovided with a robust, nearly triangular,
outwardly protruding projection at side. This projectienis stronger in the
female than in the male. We have seen a large number ef species of Ceratina
from various parts of the world, and found that this character is unique in the
megastigmata species group only.
Ilemale:Length 7.5-8,5mm. occasionally smaller.

Shining black, entirely lacking yellow marking. Wings brbwnish, stigma fus-
cous, veins slightly paler than the latter.
Punctures on head and thoTax sparse and fine, sparser and finerthan in Euro-
pean cucurbitina, altheugh those on the metasoma about as dense and strong as
in the latter.
Face broad with inner margins of eyes subparallel; clypeus fiat, much broader
than long, with apica! margin broadly straight and only slightly exceeding the
line tangent bases of eyes; clypeus with a longitudinal median greeve or line
which is not reaching apex of clypeus ; preeccipital carina absent; frons with a

pair of swellings; genal area well developed; hypostomal carina rather strong
anteriorly, very strong posteriorly.

Prepectus of prothorax with an outwardly protruding projection at side ; propoF

deum as usual, but sculpture much weaker than in cucurbitina.

Pterostigma of fore wing very large, receiving vein r about middle; jugal lobe
of hind wing long, about half as long as vannal lobe.
Tibialprocess (basitibial plate) of hind legs distinct, separated from base-of
tibiaby about one-third of tibial length,
Transverse graduli present on 2nd to 5th terga and sterna respectively.

Ceratina(Ceratina)
esakii n. sp.

This species, the size of which is between megastigmata and iwatai, deviates

from the megastigmata spec2es group in the absence of the lateralprojections on

the prepectus. A very closely allied species which isstill undescribed occurs in
Formosa.
Female: Length about 6mm.
Shining black, entirely lacking yellow marking like megastigmata. Wings
brownish, veins and stigma fuscous.
Punctures on head and thorax very fineand sparse, those on metasoma similar
to megastigmata except for 2nd and 3rd terga where punctures are very close
at each base.
Head more or less round in front view, with rather narrow and leng face;
inner margins of eyes slighly cenverging below; clypeus well convex, slightly
arched as seen in profile; frons fiat,
unlikemegastigmata, withQut a pair ofswel-

lings; preoccipital carina absent ; genal area receding ; hypostomal carina slightly
weaker than in megastigmata,
Pterostigma of fore wing fairlylarge, apical portion beyond vein r s12ghtly
more receding than in megastigmata ; jugaliobe of hind wing slightly lessthan
one-half ef vannal lobe.
Tibial process (basitibial
plate) of hind legs absent.
Transverse graduli present on 2nd to 5th terga and sterna respectively.

Male: Length about 5mm.

Differs frem the description of the female as follows :

Clypeus alone with a pale yellow rnarking, which is subtriangular in helotype

and hat-shaped in paratypes.

Hypostomal carina weak ; antennae moderate, distinctly

shorter than in mega-
stigmata in proportion to body size,

belong to the subgenus Ceratinasensu stricto.

Zadontomerus, often spelt Zlaodbntomerus, is strictly a New World subgenus, the

unique charactetr of which is that, in most species, the transverse graduli are
presenton the 2nd to 5th terga and 2nd and 3rd sterna in both sexes, This is our
new finding. Ceratinasensu stricto has more graduli on the metasomal sterna.

2. Subgenus Ceratinidia Ceckerell

Ceratinidiais one of the Oriental elements, which contains no less than 25

species. It was revised by J. van der Vecht in his finemonograph j.n 1952,

Twe species of this subgenus, which were excluded in Vecht'spaper. are com-
mon in Japan proper. They are flavipes Smith and J'aponica Coekerell, whose '

redescriptions were made by Shiokawa in 1963. Another species, okinawana

Matsum, ura et Uchida, occurs commonly in the Ryukyus including Amami-

Oshima.
Third species group of Ceratinidia

Van der Vecht divided the subgenus Ceralinidia into two species groups, the
bryanti-groupand coimpaeta-group, The thi,rdone, the ]7avipes-group, is reported
here. It is eomposed of but one species. Speciesgreups of Ceratinidia may be
