Objectives
➢ Identify the respiratory structure of fish.
➢ Describe the respiratory structure in fish.
➢ Learn the anatomy of a fish.

3
Report
• Problem statement
What is the respiratory system of a fish?
• Hypothesis
Fishes breath through gills.
• Material
Dead fish (specimen)
• Apparatus
Forceps, scissors, gloves, dissection board, tweezers, magnifying glass and knife.
• Conclusion
Is the hypothesis accepted? State the reason.
Yes the hypothesis is accepted. Fish breathe through gills.

4
Procedure
1) Dead fish (specimen) is placed on the dissection board.
2) The fin of the fish on one end are cut.
3) The side end is gently cut with the knife.
4) The cut end is opened without damaging the respiratory system.
5) The respiratory system of the fish is observed by using the magnifying
glass and tweezers.
6) Observations are recorded.

5
Safety Precautions
1) Wear gloves to prevent germs and bacteria as well as to prevent
injuries from using the sharp apparatus.

2) Wear a mask to prevent the smell and odor of the fish and fish blood.

Discussion
Respiratory System of Fish
• Oxygen and carbon dioxide dissolve in water, and most fishes
exchange dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide in water by means of
the gills.
• The gills lie behind and to the side of the mouth cavity and consist of
fleshy filaments supported by the gill arches and filled with blood
vessels, which give gills a bright red colour.
• Water taken in continuously through the mouth passes backward
between the gill bars and over the gill filaments, where the exchange
of gases takes place. The gills are protected by a gill cover in teleosts
and many other fishes but by flaps of skin in sharks, rays, and some
of the older fossil fish groups.
• The blood capillaries in the gill filaments are close to the gill surface
to take up oxygen from the water and to give up excess carbon
dioxide to the water.
• The oxygenated blood enters arteries of the gill arches and then
flows into the dorsal aorta. From there blood is distributed to the
tissues and organs of the body.
