Rocks and the

Rock Cycle

Ms . B’s Portf ol i o
Overview

Rocks are formed by and move through the rock cycle. As liquid magma deep within Earth moves closer to the
surface, it cools and hardens, forming igneous rock. Over thousands of years, igneous rocks breaks apart and is
moved to other locations by weathering, erosion, and other geologic processes. That rock forms layers of
sediment that lay on top of one another and compress. As those layers compress, sediment gets buried deep in
Earth. Because sedimentary rock is closer to the core of Earth, heat and pressure change it into metamorphic
rock. Metamorphic rock can be pushed to the surface, or it can be pushed deeper into Earth, where it melts to
form magma. When magma moves closer to Earth’s crust, the rock cycle begins again.

Instructions:
Create a Portfolio of your work with this Power Point
Template. You may change the design and add photos and
videos from the internet to show your knowledge of the
Rocks Cycle and Rock Types. You should include in your
Portfolio:
1. Brainstorming Assignment

2. Name 2 things that you learned in your group discussion.

3. Vocabulary Assignment

4. Name the 3 Rock Types and how they were formed Assignment

5. Rock Cycle Fill in the Blank Assignment

6. Choose one Rock Type and find an example of it and where it can
be found on Earth.
