2. Discussion: The teacher will relate the topic in the lesson. She will relate that their reactions
in the quotation they read has something to do with Assertion. Afterwards, discuss what
“Assertion” means. Then she will discuss the 4 Communication Styles for them to react correctly
to what is asserted or expressed in a text.

Assertion is a declaration that's made emphatically, especially as part of an argument or as if it's to

be understood as a statement of fact

Communicative style

Passive- Do not express your needs to others to avoid confrontation. ( I lose- You win)
Passive-aggressive- Shows passive qualities but angry deep inside. ( I lose- You lose)

Assertive- You express your needs and wants in a bold manner without intention of hurting
anyone's feeling .

(I win- You win)

Aggressive -Express your needs in a loud and threatening voice. (I win- You Lose)

Remember: Being assertive doesn't mean you are to violate the rights of others and appear to be
self-centered or selfish. For you to avoid negative feedback from being assertive, you need to use
respectful, calm and firm tone accompanied by an appropriate body language. Be brave to say no
when you need to without lying about the reasons.

D. Application

Activity 1. The teacher will post series of statements on the monitor. She will ask the students if
the statement is to Share or to Stop. Thumbs up if the information is reliable or thumbs down if
it is a misinformation.

1. The virus was engineered in a laboratory in China.

2. The COVID-19 virus CANNOT be spread through mosquito bites.

3. Wealthy elites are using the virus to profit from vaccines.

4. Herd immunity will protect us if we let the virus spread through the population.

5. Eating garlic helps prevent COVID-19 because of its antimicrobial properties.

6. Antibiotics CANNOT prevent or treat COVID-19 for it work only against bacteria,

not viruses.

7. Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma,

diabetes, and heart disease appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill

with the virus.

8. Vaccines against pneumonia, such as pneumococcal vaccine and Haemophilus

influenza type B (Hib) vaccine, provide protection against the new coronavirus.

9. Cleaning your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or washing your hands with

soap and water are the most effective ways to remove the virus.

10.Hand dryers are NOT effective in killing the COVID-19 virus.
