Column Baseplate
Column base plates requires consideration of bearing
pressure on the supporting material and bending of the
plate.
• Bending in baseplates are subjected to two‐way
bending.
• Web crippling and web yielding are not factors in
column base plate design

Allowable Bearing Stress of Concrete, Fp (NSCP 2001/ AISC)
On full area of a concrete support:
Fp = 0.35f’c
On less than full area of concrete support:

Fp = 0.35f’c … 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 2.0

Column Baseplate
For axially loaded base plates, the bearing stress under
the base plate is assumed uniformly distributed and can
be expressed as

fpu = (LRFD)

fpa = (ASD)

This bending pressure causes bending in the baseplate

at the assumed critical sections shown

Column Baseplate
Example 1.0:
A baseplate for a steel column supports an axial load of 1230 kN. The
columnsection is W 310 x 79 with the following properties.
Depth = 306 mm
Width = 254 mm
Area = 10100 mm2
f‘c = 20.7 MPa
Assume a full area of concrete support
1. Determine the allowable bearing pressure on the concrete footing.
2. Determine the dimension of the baseplate.
3. Determine the thickness of the base plate.

Example 1.0:
Fp = 0.35f’c but less than 0.70f’c
1. Fp = 0.35 f’c = 0.35(20.7MPa) = 7.245 Mpa
2. fp = Fp = ; 7.45MPa =
Ap = 169, 772 mm2 (B X N)
Theoretical Column
0.80bf x 0.95d
0.8 (254mm) = 203.2 mm
0.95 (366mm) = 290.7 mm
B = 203.2 + 2(X) = 370.6 mm; N = 290.7 + 2(X) = 458.1 mm (203.2 + 2X)(290.2 + 2X) = 169, 772mm2
USE 370 X 460 mm baseplate X = 83.7 mm
