Consequences:
Chile got the territories
of Antofagasta and
Tarapacá… This
territory was very rich in
Saltpeter. Which gave
Chile an economic
“boost” at the time.
Making connections..
Last week we
learned about the
layers of the soil, its
characteristics and
its properties…
USING YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND THE
Making connections.. INFORMATION GIVEN, ANSWER THE
FOLLOWING QUESTION:

In which layer of the soil do you think Saltpeter is located? Why?

Horizon 0 Is the top layer of soil, also called topsoil. It is dark brown and is
mostly made of organic material. At this level, plant and animal waste
accumulates and
decomposes, forming humus.
Horizon A Has a large amount of humus and organic matter. It is formed by rock
fragments and crystallite minerals. Plants roots reach this layer, and
worms,
insects, fungi and bacteria inhabit the area.
Horizon B Is a zone of accumulation and infiltration of minerals,
especially clay, sand, and iron oxides. They are transported by water
from the upper layers.
Horizon C Formed up of rock fragments or altered rocks.
Horizon R Is the lowest layer of soil. It is formed by whole rocks, and it is the
base of the other layers. Rock that has not undergone changes by
climatic factors is called parent rock.
