Time & Dates May 24, 2023 Quarter 4th

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of
measures of position.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to conduct systematically a mini-research applying
the different statistical methods.
C. Learning Illustrates the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles and
Competencies/Objectives percentiles. (M10SP-IVa-1)
II. CONTENT
At the end of the period, the learners should be able to:
a. recall percentiles for ungrouped data;
b. calculate and interpret a specified measure of position for
grouped data using percentiles; and
c. appreciate the importance of understanding the distribution
for further analysis and comparisons.
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
A. References • Mathematics Learning Module for Grade 10
• Mathematics for Grade 10 A Spiral Approach Explanation,
Examples, Exercises

IV. PROCEDURES
Checking of Assignment
A. Reviewing previous lesson or
presenting the new lesson Complete the table, then calculate 𝟒𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝟔𝒕𝒉 𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒍𝒆.

1. The following is a distribution for the number of

employees in 45 companies belonging to a certain
industry.

Number of Number of
Employees Companies
41-45 11
36-40 6
31-35 9
26-30 7
21-25 8
16-20 4

B. Establishing a purpose for the

Percentiles for Grouped Data
lesson
• Finding percentiles of a grouped data is similar to finding
quartiles and deciles of a grouped data.
• The kth decile denoted by 𝑃𝑘 is computed as follows:
𝑘𝑁
− 𝐶𝑓𝑏
𝑃𝑘 = 𝐿𝑃𝑘 + (100 )ⅈ
𝑓𝑃𝑘

where,
𝐿𝑃𝑘 = 𝐿𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝑘 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝐶𝑓𝑏 = 𝑐𝑢𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡ⅈ𝑣𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑏𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝑘 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝑁 = 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦
𝑓𝑃𝑘 = 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡ⅈ𝑙𝑒 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
ⅈ = 𝑠ⅈ𝑧𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 ⅈ𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑙
𝑘 = 𝑛𝑡ℎ 𝑑𝑒𝑐ⅈ𝑙𝑒
C. Presenting examples/instances of Example 1
the new lesson Calculate the 32𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 65𝑡ℎ 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡ⅈ𝑙𝑒 of the mathematics test
scores of 50 students.
Scores Frequency
46-50 4
41-45 8
36-40 11
31-35 9
26-30 12
21-25 6

Solution:
Scores Frequency Lower Class Cumulative
Boundary (LB) frequency
46-50 4 45.5 50
41-45 8 40.5 46
36-40 11 35.5 38 𝑃65 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
31-35 9 30.5 27
26-30 12 25.5 18 𝑃32 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
21-25 6 20.5 6

𝑁 = 50

32𝑁 32(50)
𝑃32 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = =
100 10
= 𝟏𝟔

• This means that we need to find the class interval where the
16th score is contained.
• Note that the 7th-18th scores belong to the class interval: 26-
30. So, the 16th score is also within the class interval.
• The 𝑃32 class is class interval 26-30.
𝐿𝐵 = 25.5
𝐶𝑓𝑏 = 6
𝑁 = 50
𝑓𝑃𝑘 = 12
ⅈ=5

Substitute the given values to the formula

𝑘𝑁
− 𝐶𝑓𝑏
𝑃𝑘 = 𝐿𝑃𝑘 + ( 100 )ⅈ
𝑓𝑃𝑘

16 − 6
𝑃32 = 25.5 + ( )5
12

𝑃32 = 𝟐𝟗. 𝟔𝟕

Therefore, 32% of the students have a score less than or equal to 29.67.

65𝑁 65(50)
𝑃65 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = =
100 10
= 𝟑𝟐. 𝟓

• This means that we need to find the class interval where the
32.5th score is contained.
• Note that the 28th-38th scores belong to the class interval:
36-40. So, the 32.5th score is also within the class interval.
• The 𝑃65 class is class interval 36-40.

𝐿𝐵 = 35.5
𝐶𝑓𝑏 = 27
𝑁 = 50
𝑓𝑃𝑘 = 11
ⅈ=5

Substitute the given values to the formula

𝑘𝑁
100 − 𝐶𝑓𝑏
𝑃𝑘 = 𝐿𝑃𝑘 + ( )ⅈ
𝑓𝑃𝑘
32.5 − 27
𝑃65 = 35.5 + ( )5
11

𝑃65 = 𝟑𝟖

Therefore, 65% of the students have a score less than or equal to 38.

51-60 4
41-50 12
31-40 6
21-30 3
11-20 2
1-10 1

a. 𝑃15
b. 𝑃35
c. 𝑃70

F. Generalization • How do we calculate percentiles for grouped data?

G. Evaluating Learning
Complete the table, then calculate 𝑷𝟐𝟓 , 𝑷𝟔𝟐 , 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝟗𝟎 .
