Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use
this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning at home. Furthermore, you are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included
in the module.

For the learner:

As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different activities
in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be reminded of
the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part
of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let Us Try before moving on to the other
activities.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are done.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module,
do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that
you are not alone. We hope that through this material, you will experience
meaningful learning and gain deep understanding of the relevant
competencies. You can do it!

Let Us Learn

After going through this module, you are expected to:

Ø Calculates a specified measure of position (e.g. 90th percentile) of a set
of data. (M10SP-IVb-1)

Specifically, you will;

1. identify the values needed in solving the indicated measure of
position for grouped data.
2. find the value of the specified measures of position.
3. interpret the result of the specified quantile

Let Us Try

Let us determine how much you already know about calculating the measure
of position for grouped data. If you answer all the test items correctly in this
pretest, then you may skip studying this learning material and proceed to the
next learning module.

DIRECTION: Read and understand each item, then choose the letter of your answer
and write it on your answer sheet.

Refer to your answer in table A below.

The table above is an example of a Grouped Data. The concept of frequency

distribution was applied in forming the given table. We will focus our discussion on
the Measures of Position for Grouped Data.

Measures of Position for Grouped Data

A. QUARTILE

Quartiles divide the distribution into four equal parts.

In computing the quartiles for grouped data, the formula below is used:
#$
"#$&
𝑄! = 𝐿𝐵 + & %
'𝑖
$'#

where: LB = lower boundary of the Qk class

N = total frequency
𝑐𝑓( = cumulative frequency of the class before the Qk class
𝑓)! = frequency of the Qk class
i = size of class interval
k = nth quartile, where n = 1, 2, and 3

Example 1: Calculate the Q1, Q2, and Q3 of the Mathematics test scores of 50
students.
Scores Frequency
50 - 54 1
45 - 49 3
40 - 44 8
35 - 39 12
30 - 34 8
25 - 29 10
20 - 24 6
15 - 19 2

5
Solution: Add 1 column for the less than cumulative frequency.

Lower Boundary
Scores Frequency < Cumulative Frequency (subtract 0.5 from
the lower limits)
50 – 54 1 1 + 49 = 50 50 − 0.5 = 49.5
45 – 49 3 3 + 46 = 49 45 − 0.5 = 44.5
40 – 44 8 8 + 38 = 46 40 − 0.5 = 39.5
35 – 39 12 12 + 26 = 38 35 − 0.5 = 34.5
30 – 34 8 8 + 18 = 26 30 − 0.5 = 29.5
25 – 29 10 10 + 8 = 18 25 − 0.5 = 24.5
20 – 24 6 6+2 = 8 20 − 0.5 = 19.5
15 – 19 2 2 15 − 0.5 = 14.5

Let Us Enhance

In your Math group chat, give your weight in kilogram and height in
centimeter. Copy the frequency distribution in your notebook because this
will be used in the next module.

1. Gather the data. Just choose either of the two categories between
height and weight. (The data must include all the students in your
section. Write the data in a separate sheet of paper)
2. Write the values in the table below:

Title:____________________________________________________________________

3. Tally the data in a given class intervals of your chosen category.

4. Complete the table.
5. Solve one value of each measure of position.
6. Interpret the result.
For height use the following class intervals. You may add values above and
below depending on your data.

Let Us Reflect

The measures of position for grouped data remind us that we cannot

live alone throughout our life. There are instances that we need someone to
rely on, for us to succeed in every challenge that will come our way. We must
know how to strengthen our relationship with the people around us especially
our family. We should value them despite their imperfections. Never do things
that will hurt them. Instead, show them love and respect.

Write a refection journal titled “Measure of Position”
