LESSON: Unit 7-Welcome to Italy-Lesson 1
TYPE OF LESSON: Aquisition of new knowledge
APPROACH: Communicative

SKILLS: Speaking, reading and writing

AIMS:
-To introduce new structures related to asking about items in a menu at a restaurant
-To introduce new vocabulary related to food items
-To introduce can for permission and requests
-To introduce some simple information about Italy

OBJECTIVES: by the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
- identify and use food vocabulary correctly
- use can for requests and permission
- act out a simple dialogue at the restaurant
- answer simple questions about Italy

TEACHING TECHNIQUES: Conversation, dialogue, exercise, explanation, role-play


TEACHING AIDS: laptop, projector, digital textbook, notebooks, activity book, board, toys

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS


- some pupils might feel nervous and reluctant to participate in the activity, thus they may
need assistance;
- stronger pupils might dominate and want to answer/speak out at most stages of the lesson,
thus they will respond in turn
- some activities might take longer than anticipated
- some students may not understand the oral commands or the instructions, thus they will be
repeated in Romanian.

GREETING STUDENTS AND CHECKING ATTENDANCE:


Aims: To prepare the students for the lesson
Timing: 2`

Procedure: The teacher greets the class and checks attendance.

WARM-UP
Aims: To get Ss’ attention on the topic; to activate previous knowledge; to announce the
objectives of the lesson
Timing: 5`
Interaction: T-Ss, S-T
Procedure: T writes the date and the title of the lesson on the board, and then she announces
the objectives of the lesson. T draws the shape of Italy on the board, then she asks Ss if they
know what country it is. T gives Ss the right answer, then she asks Ss if they have ever been
to Italy. Ss give their answers.

Aims: to practice listening for detail; to introduce Ss to information about Italy
Timing: 8’
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T
Procedure: T tells Ss to watch the video and pay attention to certain pieces of information
because they are going to answer some question after watching the video. T plays the video at
0.75 speed, then Ss do the interactive quiz.

ACTIVITY 2: Exercise 1/pg. 60-SB (Annex 1)


Aims: to practice listening; to practice reading and understanding of a text
Timing: 10’
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T, T-G
Procedure: T asks Ss to open their textbooks on page 60 and look at exercise 1. T tells Ss to
open their SB at page 60 and writes the page number on the board. T asks Ss to describe the
picture at ex. 1/p 60 (SB). T announces Ss that they are going to watch a video and then read
the text on roles. After watching the video, T names Ss to come in front of the class and act
out the dialogue.

ACTIVITY 3: Exercise 2/pg. 60-SB (Annex 1)


Aim: to check understanding of the text
Timing: 3’
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T
Procedure: T asks Ss to look at exercise 2. T asks one S to read the instruction. Ss have to fill
in the gaps with information from the text.T asks Ss to do the exercise individually. T
announces to Ss that they have 2 minutes to complete the task. After Ss finish the task, T asks
one S to write the answers on the board.

ACTIVITY 4: Exercise 3/pg. 61-SB (Annex 2)


Aims: To activate previously taught vocabulary and to introduce new vocabulary
Timing: 7’
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T, S-S, T-P
Procedure: T asks Ss to look at the words from exrcise 3 in their SB. T write the words on the
board and then she draws a word cloud. T tell Ss to pair up and find food words in the text.
She writes them in the word cloud. Then T asks Ss to complete the word cloud with
previously taught food words. She writes the words on the board. T explains the structures
with the verb can, used to ask for items in the menu at a restaurant. She writes them on the
board. She also reminds Ss the use of can for asking permission.

ACTIVITY 5: Game -Baamboozle (https://www.baamboozle.com/game/508601)


Aims: To review and practice the use of can for requests and permission
Timing: 5’
Interaction: T-Ss, T-G
Procedure: T shows the game on the smart board and explain to Ss how to play it. She
organizes the Ss into 4 groups and the Ss start playing. T moderates the game. The team with
most points wins.
EXTRA-ACTIVITY: Exercise 5/pg. 61-SB (Annex 2)
Aims: To practice new vocabulary
Timing: 5’
Interaction: T-Ss, T-P

EVALUATION AND HOMEWORK


Aims: To give Ss proper feedback; to provide further practice on the topics
Timing: 2`
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T
The teacher praises the students and asks them what they have learnt at the end of the lesson
and if they have any questions. T answers questions if there are any. Then she assigns
exercise 1/pg 40 (WB) as homework. (Annex 3)
