Praise be to the presence of Allah SWT, for His mercy and guidance, we were able to finish
this paper entitled "countable and uncountable nouns" smoothly. Previously thanks to friends who
have helped and cooperated during the process of making this paper. We realize that this paper is
still far from perfect, there are still many shortcomings in terms of both content and writing. This
is due to our limitations. Therefore, we expect constructive criticism and suggestions for the
improvement of the next paper. We hope that what we have conveyed in this paper can be of many
benefits, especially for those of us who are still in the learning stage and in general for all readers.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1. Background
the importance of understanding the use of countable nouns and uncountable nouns
in English. These two types of nouns have differences in the way they are used in
sentences, the use of articles, quantifiers, and their proper use in certain contexts.

This paper aims to provide a deeper understanding of these two types of nouns. In
this paper, we will discuss the definitions, characteristics, examples, and usage rules
related to countable and uncountable nouns. In addition, an explanation will also be
given regarding the differences between the two and common mistakes that often occur
in their use.

This paper is expected to provide useful knowledge for readers to improve their
understanding and ability to use countable and uncountable nouns correctly in English.

DISCUSSION

A. Definition of Countable Nouns


Countable nouns are nouns that can be counted directly, for example one apple, two
apples and so on. Countable nouns can also use the articles a or an and can also be made
plural and can be counted like person, box, coin, animal, bottle, table, cup, plate, chair, bag,
cat, dog, glass, book, man, baby house , and others.
The following is the use of countable nouns in sentences:
o I have a brother and two sisters.
o Ryan has a cheese sandwich and an apple for breakfast
o Do you like these photos?

1. Characteristics of Countable Nouns


a. Can be changed to plural form
b. You can use the article "a, an or the" in front of a singular noun or the article "the"
in front of a plural noun.
c. Can use the word all of (all), none of (none), both of (both) or few in the plural
form.
d. You can use the word some (some) or any (a few) in the plural.
e. It can be used with the words many, a lot of, several or a great many in the plural.
f. Can use the word all of (all), none of (not one), both of (both) or few (some) in
the plural form.

2. Forms of Countable Nouns

Countable nouns can be divided into two forms:

1. Singular nouns are nouns that are singular.


For example: book, sister, mango, pencil, knife, fly, and others.
2. Plural nouns are nouns that are in the plural form.
For example: books, sisters, pencils, mangoes, knives, and others.

3. Examples of Countable Noun Sentences
Some examples of countable noun sentences are as follows:
1. She is not reading a magazine.
2. The university students are clever.
3. The vase is on the table.
4. My diary is in the cupboard.
5. The flowers in our backyard are fresh and look beautiful.

B. Definition of Uncountable Nouns


Uncountable nouns or also called mass nouns are nouns that cannot be counted.
Uncountable nouns can also be remembered as nouns that only have one form. An example
is water. The word cannot be said to be a water or two water, but can be used by inserting
other nouns, for example a glass of water. Examples of nouns that cannot be counted or
uncountable nouns are rice, love, sugar, assistance, cheese, coffee, money, tea, music, art,
sand, water, and others. Apart from that, in uncountable nouns there are also nouns that
refer to abstract ideas and emotions such as fun, advice, knowledge, love, happiness.
The following is the use of uncountable nouns in sentences:
o She has some food
o Can you give me some information about that?
1. Included in Uncountable Nouns
a. Groups of a number of similar objects, for example the noun furniture, because this
word is used to describe all types of objects that fall into that group.
b. Liquid nouns (fluid/liquid) such as coffee, water, milk, tea, soup, blood, etc;
c. Solid nouns such as bread, ice, cheese, meat, silver, glass, wood, etc;
d. Noun gas (gas) such as water, oxygen,steam, nitrogen, smoke.
e. Nouns consisting of objects small that is difficult to count (particle) such as corn,
sand, salt, flour, rice, wheat,sugar.
f. Abstract noun (abstraction) which its form cannot be perceived by your five senses,
the words in this category in the form of ideas, ideas; just being in your mind. For
example beauty, smart,work, news, space, homework, health, education.
g. Variety of languages (lanquage) such as English, Indonesian, Arabic, Chinese,
Japanese.
2. Characteristics of Uncountable Nouns
a. Cannot use the article "a" or "an" before an uncountable noun even in the
singular. But can use the article (article) "the".

b. Can not be formed plural (plural) and always in the singular (singular).
c. Can use the word some or any which means a little.
d. Can use the word much (may not use many), a lot of, a great deal of, or plenty
of which means a lot.

3. Examples of Countable Noun Sentences


a. The fabric is made from silk. (Bahan pakaian ini terbuat dari sutera.)
b. I have some water.
c. I had a bowl of pasta for lunch.
d. Michael died his hair blue.
e. We can measure foods like cake, bread, pizza, meat, and cheese in pieces.
f. Her necklace was made of paper.
g. Paul bought 2 jars of honey.
h. Nathan stood on a piece of chewing gum.
i. It’s impossible to count all the grains of sand on the beach.
j. I can’t drink more than 5 cups of coffee a day.
k. We need half a kilo of chicken and 250 grams of rice.

4. Use of the words Much, Many, Few, Little in Countable and Uncountable Nouns
1. The difference between Many and Much
o Many are used in countable nouns
o Much is used in uncountable nouns

These two words have many meanings. Example of sentences:


o How many years have you lived in semarang?
o I have so much homework

2. The difference between Few and Little


The word few is used for countable nouns and the word little refers more to
uncountable nouns.
Example :
o There is a few men in the party.
o Donald only has a few friends in Jakarta.
o I need a little help now.
o I have a little time only to come here.

3. The difference between Fewer and Less
fewer is used for countable nouns, while less is used for uncountable nouns.
Example :
o A secretary makes less money than a manager.
o Today I can spend less time eating and have more exercise.
o A secretary makes less money than a manager.
o Compared to Science, there’s fewer student who likes Math.
4. The difference between Some and Any
Some and any have the same meaning, namely several. These two words are
commonly used to express nouns that have an indeterminate number of plural
countable nouns or uncountable nouns.
Example :
o She has some questions.
o There are some reasons I can tell you why I should be worry right now.
o I owe any money.
o You could tell me any reasons, but I still won’t believe it

Conclusion
Based on these papers, in concluded that Countable nouns are nouns that can be counted
while uncountable nouns cannot be counted or to count them requires measurements, scales,
meters, measurements and so on.
While, Uncountable nouns only have a singular form and are followed by a singular verb,
but countable nouns use singular verbs with singular nouns that can be counted and the same goes
for plural forms.
