Emily in Paris discussion sheet.

1. Shock Culture
a. Did Emily experience shock culture? If yes, give explanation and provide examples.
Response: Yes, she did. When she got to the apartment she was going to stay in Paris,
it didn't have an elevator and the first floor was the ground floor. The greeting is done
in Paris, she has to kiss his cheek while in America just shakes hands. Emily Cooper
finds out that people in Paris are not as friendly as she first thought. She also discovers
that in Paris, people start their work at 10:30 instead of 08:30 as she thought.
b. What phases of shock culture do you think Emily experienced? Mention them and
provide the examples.
Response: Emily is in Paris for her honeymoon and negotiation stage. During the
honeymoon stage, Emily thought that Paris was amazing and charming. The
negotiation stage is when she feels bad because the culture is so different. In the
honeymoon phase, when Emily has just arrived in Paris she looks at the street, smiles
widely and takes some pictures to upload on her Instagram account. She is very
passionate about Paris. The second is the negotiation phase when Emily starts to learn
about the number of floors in her apartment but sometimes she opens someone else's
apartment wrong. Furthermore, Emily also didn't learn French so she used Google
Translate to communicate, and when she had a meeting with her co-workers, she was
very excited and spoke louder, and Luc scolded Emily. Next, is the adaptation phase.
Here Emily has to learn about Paris with their characters and now she can
communicate with each other with a wider knowledge of French vocabulary and start
to understand French. While in Paris, she became an influencer on her Instagram
because she always posted her activities in Paris.
2. Cultural Conflict
a. Did Emily experience Intercultural Communication? If yes, give explanation and
provide examples.
Response: Yes, she did. because it was Emily's first time coming to Paris and she had
never learned about Paris before. Especially in her office, communication is very
important for Emily and her co-workers, but her co-workers and boss can speak
English, so Emily has no difficulty communicating with them. But when Emily doesn't
speak French, she has problems and has difficulty speaking with people outside her
office. Like when buying bread.
b. What causes the cultural conflict between Emily and her colleagues?
Response: They have differences in culture, language, behaviour and mindset
between America and Paris. Emily doesn't speak French and doesn't understand
French, so she can't communicate with her non-English speaking colleagues in France.
There were many different cultures between Emily and her peers, and it was too
difficult for them to communicate.
c. Provide examples of event that reflect the causes of cultural conflict that Emily
experienced. (If there was, give examples and provide explanation. If there was no,
just answer “none”)
- Ethnocentrism
Response: In this film, Emily uses English because she is not ready to speak French, so
her new co-workers make fun of her because Emily can't speak French.
Emily's colleagues have a culture of telling someone to promote their product without
themselves and they think this is a good decision in their culture, not using Instagram
as Emily did.
- Misinterpretation
Response: I think it happened during the first meeting between Emily and her new co-
worker in Paris. People think why is Emily talking louder, they think Emily is angry or
screaming, but in that scene, Emily looks excited with her loud voice because she is so
excited.
In France, the office opens at 10.30 am, but Emily leaves at 8.30 am..
- Stereotypes.
Response: Emily was reprimanded by her new coworker for speaking so loudly that it
sounded like she was shouting, even though Emily's tone was similar and she was a
very cheerful woman.
3. In your personal view, which one was wrong? Emily or her colleagues? Explain your
argument.
Response: I think both sides are wrong.
Emily goes to France without understanding the French language and culture, and her
colleagues don't seem to appreciate Emily's willingness to learn and they don't want to
mingle with Emily.
4. If you were Emily, what would you do?
Response: Before I go to another country I have to know and learn a little about the
language and culture of the country I am going to.
5. If you were one of Emily’s colleagues in Paris, what would you do?
Response: I will help Emily to adapt to the culture in France and recommend some things
that can help Emily to be able to use French and get used to the culture in France.
