➢ Give the Meanings of the following words/phrases:

speak up – tell
stare – gaze
drag – pull
interrupt – break in, disturb, cut off
make up your mind – take a decision

❖ Answer the following:

1. What do you mean by chivvying? Does chivvying encroach upon the freedom of
children?
Chivvying means urging someone repeatedly to do something.
Chivvying does encroach upon the freedom of children but freedom without restrictions
can make them wild and uncivilised. Do’s and Don’ts therefore limit their freedom for
their own good.

2. “Say thank you” – who says this line and why?

This is said by the grown-ups to their children. They want to teach children to be grateful
to those who help them or give them some gift. Saying ‘Thank you’ in return shows good
manners and upbringing.
3. Why do you think grown-ups say the kind of things mentioned in the poem? Is it
important that they teach children good manners and how to behave in public?

The grown-ups say such kind of things to their children in order to teach them good
manners, etiquettes and how to behave in public. It is important because the children
must learn good behaviour. The grown-ups just need the right kind of approach to do
this.

4. Why do you think adults keep on instructing always?

The adults keep on instructing always to make their children well acquainted with social
manners. Habits can be only inculcated in young age.

5. Justify the aptness of the poem ‘Chivvy’.
‘Chivvy’ is a word which means to ask somebody repeatedly to do something but the
tone, generally, is an angry tone. The poem is full of instructions given by the grown-ups
to the children as what they should do and what they should not do, with regards to their
behaviour. So, the title of the poem is quite apt and justified.
