You are the President of the Student Union at your school. You are
preparing a speech to welcome new students on the first day of school.In
order to help students achieve success and have an enjoyable school life,
you want to talk about the following in your speech:
-importance of following school rules; and
-importance of interpersonal relationships.
The first part of the speech has been written for you to finish the speech.

Good morning Principal, teachers and fellow students,

1 On behalf of the Students’ Union, I’d like to welcome all of you to our
school. I am sure we all want to achieve success and have an
enjoyable school life, so this morning I’d like to give you some
advice.

2 Have you ever been punished by your teacher for breaching school
rules, ranging from being late to forgetting to submit your
homework? You must have found it annoying to follow strict rules,
right? However, have you considered the possible consequences of
violating the guidelines, which may lead to chaos in our school?
School rules demand us to hand in homework on time, to be a
responsible student, not to run in the corridor for the sake of our
safety. It is no exaggeration to say that schools are a miniature
society. If we have been taught about the concept of obeying school
rules, we’ll also follow the laws in society as a civilized and law-
abiding citizen. So, do you realise the importance of following
school rules?
3

Similarly, following school rules also means mutual respect. As we

all know, speaking foul language and violence are prohibited in our
campus. With the clear regulations, we understand controlling our
temper is essential and using violence cannot solve the problems. If
you don’t want your conduct marks to be deducted, why don’t you

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
respect others in all aspects, including your verbal and body
language? A harmonious schooling environment can lead to an
enjoyable school life.
4
Apart from following school rules, much is now being said that going
to school is for acquiring knowledge, but many miss the direction
of developing interpersonal relationships. An all-rounded
education should not just focus on academics, instead socialization is
key to a wholesome development. Communication skills and team
spirit can be fostered via doing projects or interacting with peers in
school, which are the basic and useful surviving techniques in society
when we grow up. Making friends can also expand our social
network and gain new perspectives in our own lives. As an old
saying goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Who would
like to be an outcast and spend the rest of their life being alone?
Having a lifelong companion is one of the spellbinding things in our
life journey. No matter whether you are cheerful or frustrated, there
is always a group of friends who are willing to back you up and give
you hope when you encounter any difficulties. Especially for F.6
students, a pal can be your motivation to struggle through the
overwhelming DSE as you are with your friends overcoming the
obstacle together. Studies are important but friendship is also of the
5
same value.
Overall speaking, adapting to a new environment of secondary
school life may be a challenging task for newcomers. But remember
‘where there’s a will, there’s a way’. After the first few months, you
can definitely find your own way to a fruitful school life!
3 (10)____Undeniably____, more and more(11)____organizations____
are(12)____developed____ to do students counselling, helping them to
overcome the pressure. For example, arranging school social workers and
to(14)____solve____ the problem one day.
4 It is obvious that this teenage problem could not
the(16)____skyrocketing____ number of suicide students.
C. Grammar
Present perfect:
1. 曾經進行某動作/不曾進行某動作
e.g. I have been to Ocean Park. / I have never been to Ocean Park.
2. 完成了多少
e.g. I have just/already read 10 pages today.
3. 做過多少次
e.g. I have read the book three times already.
 通常使用 present perfect 的時候,都有"just", “yet", “already"等字
 使用 present perfect 的時候,不會有"ago", “when I was small"等字
提示詞
( i ) 表示狀況由過去持續至現在「for + 一段時間」或「since +某個時間」
例 1﹕I have learned English for ten years. (我學英語至今已有十年。)
例 2﹕I have learned English since (自從) 2003. (我從 2003 年開始學英語至
今。)
( ii )表示曾經或已完成的事﹕
just (剛剛), already (己經) ,ever (曾經), yet (未曾), before (之前), so far (到目
前為止)等。
ENG SCHOOL-LIFE P13
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Present perfect continuous (Present perfect progressive)
1. 某動作進行了多久,而該動作現在仍然繼續進行
(可視為 present perfect + present continuous)
e.g. I have been waiting for John for an hour and he still hasn’t arrived!
 通常 present perfect continuous 句子都有 for, since, all morning 等字

常見問題:
1. 為甚麼常常看見"since",都沒有用 present perfect continuous 呢?
eg 為甚麼是 John has known Mary since they were young, 而非 has been
