SUMMARY REPORT ON MY FIELD EXPERIENCE AT THE ST JOSEPH ANGLICAN BASIC
SSCHOOL, JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL AT AAKROPONG AKUAPIM
Supported teaching in school is the practical school based component or exposure to field experience
in school of the teacher education programme designed to give student teacher opportunity to
observe, plan and work collaboratively with peers and mentors in school to understand the
approaches or gain practical knowledge about teaching and learning of children with diverse socio-
cultural and linguistic background.
Our observation was about the familiarization, discussion of the basic school curriculum, and its
related materials, classroom presentation and management Assessment, lesson introduction and
closure Assessment, Child study, Trait of Teacher Professionalism and teaching philosophy.
I was among the team of 18 student Teachers who were to embark on observation at the Akropong
Anglican in Akropong-Akuapem. I took a qualitative research approach for six weeks which comprises
of questionnaires, interviews, and anecdotal recording. Below are the weekly findings of how teaching
and learning were observed in the classroom.

WEEK ONE FARMILIARISATION WITH STS SCHOOL

My team and I arrived at the school exactly 7:30am on the 15th
February ,2023 on Wednesday which marked the first day of supported
teaching in school .On my arrival, Morning tutorial was ongoing, In
about thirty minutes work have been completed and the entire school
gathered at the Basic 9 classroom for worship . After the worship my
team and I were directed to the Headmaster’s office who is in the
person of Mr Offei Asante David to introduce ourselves and the purpose
of our arrival. He warmly welcome us without wasting much time,
Briefed us about the history of the school, it’s population, infrastructure
(football field, office space, library, canteen, classroom blocks, ICT
laboratory and urinal), stakeholders of the school (SMC, PTA, etc),
mission and vision, how it is managed and other vital fact we ought to
known.
Afterwards in the day, He officially introduced us to the Teachers,
Students and non-Teaching Staff after which we were paired and
assigned to our various classes allocated. My partner and I had Basic 8.
Mrs Bernice is the mentor as well as the R.M.E facilitator in basic 8. I
also did observe some classroom rules, their relevance to the class and
how it is enforced as well as the consequences for breaking it. At
2:30pm, the school bell was rang for closing and then we departed back
to campus.

WEEK TWO: OBSERVATION ON THE BASIC SCHOOL CURRICULUM AND ITS RELATED
MATERIALS

Week two observation which is about discussion of the basic school curriculum and its related
materials commence on 22nd February, 2023. It was unfortunate we met student on the school
compound with few teachers because most of them were writing Promotion Examination at Akropong
Presbyterian college of Education .My team and I quickly mobilized the learners to clean the school
compound and their respective classroom. In about 30 minutes, Morning duty was done and we all
assembled at the Basic 9 classroom for worship.

After the worship, my team and I went to greet the Headmaster after which we were coordinated to
our various classes assigned for our observation. Learners went for first break immediately after the
first lesson which is Information Communication and Technology taught by Mr Patrick Wenchi.

Mrs Bernice Osei, the facilitator as well as the mentor for basic 8 had an Extra Curriculum Activities
with us after lunch. This is to improve the Academic performance of learners by concentrating on the
sub–average learners. This activity was organized at the Basic 9 classroom. I discovered the school
have the new curriculum from KG1-BS9, Teachers manual guide, Learners work book, time table and
Teaching and Learning materials which includes science apparatus, chalk, Mathematical instrument,
textbook etc.

The mentor explains that the new curriculum is based on learner centered where facilitators are to do
30% of teaching and learners to participate 70% thus, Reading, Writing, Arithmetic and Creativity for
learner to engage in ‘’hand on activities‘’. She also talked about the organization for the basic school
curriculum which includes, Strand; which is the broad area of the subject, also sub-strand which is the
topic within each Strand, again the content standard which explains the level of knowledge learners
need to attain, moreover the indicator also known as the clear outcome learners have to exhibit to
meet the content standard and the Examples which clearly identifies the expected outcome of the
indicator which help the facilitators in delivery of the curriculum.

Thus; my study and observation for week two basic school curriculum and its related materials was
very effective.

WEEK THREE; CLASSROOM PRESENTATION, MANAGEMENT AND ASSESSMENT
Observation for week three commence on 1st March, 2023 at exactly 7:30am which was about
classroom presentation, management and assessment.

I observe classroom teaching thus, how to introduce a lesson presentation , ways of managing the
classroom and the technique for assessing student during teaching and learning period entails one to
plan sequentially in order to engage learners in the lesson.’’ Starter’’ is one of the teaching approach
used by the teachers to introduce elegant lesson which; recitation of Poems , familiar songs, rhymes
and physical and enjoyable exercise to draws learners attention to the lesson. The facilitator pauses
interim tently and allow learners to ask question. I also observed that effective lesson could be
presented in a series of graded steps when the classroom is well managed. This is where the
facilitator adopted the technique of effective supervision to prevent unnecessary destruction in order
to attain learners full participation in the lesson for successful outcome. The classroom was also
arranged that both academically sound and average student are paired on a seat irrespective of their
socio–cultural and linguistic background.

The classroom was also assessed by the use of varied and valid mode of the assessment (formative
or summative) which could be during and after the lesson, in the course of the term and end of term
examination as well as end of the academic year

WEEK FOUR; OBSERVATION OF TRAITS OF TEACHER PROFESSIONALISM
On the 8th of March my fourth day of observation was to observe the traits of the teacher in the school
including my class teacher .In every profession each and everyone has his or her standard of
behaviour. I did observed that, some facilitators keep on open doors for students colleagues and
parents, dresses decently and spend extra time with learners as well as supporting them academically
and financially. Others too are not friendly, empathetic and resourceful. During this observation, the
challenges I observed is that, some teachers did not want to be recorded .I also observed some
unacceptable behaviour of the teacher which include ;the use of abusive words which prevented
learners from sharing their ideas and participate fully during lesson .Lateness and laziness on the
part of some teachers causes lesson not to be completed in a given time. In view of this ,some of the
professional practice I will focus include patience with the learners ,punctuality and regularity and
giving learners more time to complete their task as well as application of individual instruction .

WEEK FIVE; CHILD STUDY

Week five observation which is on child study (focusing on child learning and progress ) started on 8th
March, 2023. Since teaching and learning is child centered, Teachers must be able to identify learners
need in other to remove barrier s. I did identify the learning needs of learners using some collecting
tools such as interviews, checklist, anecdotal report and questionnaire. In my observation I identify
two learners, learner A and learner B who were 14 years old in Basic 8.Learner A was a citizen of
Akropong- Akuapim and learner B a native of Akropong–Mamfe in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
Learner A who had lost her mother and father also have travelled left alone and been maltreated
and not provided with the basic need as well as lacking motivation. Learner B who’s parent are
farmers also lack motivation. This has dwindled both learner A and Learner B academically. Learner
A is good in sport whiles Leaner B is good in reading .some learning needs that was identify in learner
A was dyscalculia but learner B has a problem of Attention deficit and hyperactive disorders. Some
pedagogical strategy I was able to come up with ; was to encourage learners having barriers like
learner A and B and talked to the teachers to motivate and support them both financially and
academically.

WEEK SIX: TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Taking a clue from the discussion with my STS partner and mentor, my review personal teaching
philosophy statement is that teachers must create atmosphere that is welcoming and accessible; a
place that student will feel secure and comfortable coming to and where they know how to use the
resources that are provided. The classroom should be interesting in which student from all cultural
and personal backgrounds will feel comfortable contributing. I developed learning environment that
have multiple workstations in which students can work in groups to solve problems. I find group-based
classroom layout (through table seating) help children to communicate and learn from one another
while learning. Making sure student feel included in the classroom community is key to helping them
learn. A safe classroom environment lays the ground work for students to become actively engaged in
learning subject outside their previous academic experience, enabling them to achieve my
pedagogical aim and expand their intellectual horizons in both scholarly and business environment. I
guard the students through reformulating their thoughts to convey their ideas more clearly to their
classmates during discussions.
In conclusion, my observation at St. Joseph Anglican Basic School was effective and has helped me
to review my teaching philosophy statement through the identification of learning needs and how to
manage them in our classroom to able to achieve the aims and objectives of the curriculum.
