SUMMARY REPORT ON MY FIELD EXPERIENCE AT THE ST JOSEPH ANGLICAN BASIC
SSCHOOL, JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL AT AAKROPONG AKUAPIM
Supported teaching in school is the practical school based component or exposure to field experience
in school of the teacher education programme designed to give student teacher opportunity to
observe, plan and work collaboratively with peers and mentors in school to understand the
approaches or gain practical knowledge about teaching and learning of children with diverse socio-
cultural and linguistic background.
Our observation was about the familiarization, discussion of the basic school curriculum, and its
related materials, classroom presentation and management Assessment, lesson introduction and
closure Assessment, Child study, Trait of Teacher Professionalism and teaching philosophy.
I was among the team of 18 student Teachers who were to embark on observation at the Akropong
Anglican in Akropong-Akuapem. I took a qualitative research approach for six weeks which comprises
of questionnaires, interviews, and anecdotal recording. Below are the weekly findings of how teaching
and learning were observed in the classroom.

WEEK TWO: OBSERVATION ON THE BASIC SCHOOL CURRICULUM AND ITS RELATED
MATERIALS
Week two observation which is about discussion of the basic school curriculum and its related
materials commence on 22nd February, 2023. It was unfortunate we met student on the school
compound with few teachers because most of them were writing Promotion Examination at Akropong
Presbyterian college of Education .My team and I quickly mobilized the learners to clean the school
compound and their respective classroom. In about 30 minutes, Morning duty was done and we all
assembled at the Basic 9 classroom for worship.
After the worship, my team and I went to greet the Headmaster after which we were coordinated to
our various classes assigned for our observation. Learners went for first break immediately after the
first lesson which is Information Communication and Technology taught by Mr Patrick Wenchi.
Mrs Bernice Osei, the facilitator as well as the mentor for basic 8 had an Extra Curriculum Activities
with us after lunch. This is to improve the Academic performance of learners by concentrating on the
sub–average learners. This activity was organized at the Basic 9 classroom. I discovered the school
have the new curriculum from KG1-BS9, Teachers manual guide, Learners work book, time table and
Teaching and Learning materials which includes science apparatus, chalk, Mathematical instrument,
textbook etc.
The mentor explains that the new curriculum is based on learner centered where facilitators are to do
30% of teaching and learners to participate 70% thus, Reading, Writing, Arithmetic and Creativity for
learner to engage in ‘’hand on activities‘’. She also talked about the organization for the basic school
curriculum which includes, Strand; which is the broad area of the subject, also sub-strand which is the
topic within each Strand, again the content standard which explains the level of knowledge learners
need to attain, moreover the indicator also known as the clear outcome learners have to exhibit to
meet the content standard and the Examples which clearly identifies the expected outcome of the
indicator which help the facilitators in delivery of the curriculum.
Thus; my study and observation for week two basic school curriculum and its related materials was
very effective.

WEEK THREE; CLASSROOM PRESENTATION, MANAGEMENT AND ASSESSMENT
Observation for week three commence on 1st March, 2023 at exactly 7:30am which was about
classroom presentation, management and assessment.
I observe classroom teaching thus, how to introduce a lesson presentation , ways of managing the
classroom and the technique for assessing student during teaching and learning period entails one to
plan sequentially in order to engage learners in the lesson.’’ Starter’’ is one of the teaching approach
used by the teachers to introduce elegant lesson which; recitation of Poems , familiar songs, rhymes
and physical and enjoyable exercise to draws learners attention to the lesson. The facilitator pauses
interim tently and allow learners to ask question. I also observed that effective lesson could be
presented in a series of graded steps when the classroom is well managed. This is where the
facilitator adopted the technique of effective supervision to prevent unnecessary destruction in order
to attain learners full participation in the lesson for successful outcome. The classroom was also
arranged that both academically sound and average student are paired on a seat irrespective of their
socio–cultural and linguistic background.
The classroom was also assessed by the use of varied and valid mode of the assessment (formative
or summative) which could be during and after the lesson, in the course of the term and end of term
examination as well as end of the academic year

WEEK FOUR; OBSERVATION OF TRAITS OF TEACHER PROFESSIONALISM
On the 8th of March my fourth day of observation was to observe the traits of the teacher in the school
including my class teacher .In every profession each and everyone has his or her standard of
behaviour. I did observed that, some facilitators keep on open doors for students colleagues and
parents, dresses decently and spend extra time with learners as well as supporting them academically
and financially. Others too are not friendly, empathetic and resourceful. During this observation, the
challenges I observed is that, some teachers did not want to be recorded .I also observed some
unacceptable behaviour of the teacher which include ;the use of abusive words which prevented
learners from sharing their ideas and participate fully during lesson .Lateness and laziness on the
part of some teachers causes lesson not to be completed in a given time. In view of this ,some of the
professional practice I will focus include patience with the learners ,punctuality and regularity and
giving learners more time to complete their task as well as application of individual instruction .
