RESEARCH FINDING AND DISCUSSION

A. Research Finding

1. The steps used in the student self-assessment technique

In this study, data collection was carried out using a questionnaire.

Questionnaire were distributed to 15 students. The questionnaire has two parts

which include questions regarding understanding self-assessment and speaking.

Therefore the researchers conducted research at SMPN 6 Pasar Kemis to

find out the situation and the number of students which can be seen from the

following table 4.1:

a. Instrument Spesification

To obtain data in this study the instruments used the researcher in this study

is using the test. The test used is that the researcher asks students to make a

descriptive text and then the results of the test are presented.

The next activity is compiling instrument grille. The grid is in the form of a

matrix table containing specifications instrument to be written. As for the grid

which includes self assessment and speaking variables, which can be seen in table

2023. Before the research was carried out, direct observations were made to

schools to see the situation and conditions of schools as well as consultations with

teachers in the field of English studies about the students to be studied. Then the

researcher consulted the supervisor and prepared data collection instruments

consisting of test questions and lesson plans which had previously been validated

by speaking lecturers and English teachers.

The researcher carried out the learning process in three meetings with

details of 6 hours of lessons, where 1 lesson lasted 40 minutes. Data collection

was carried out by giving a test in the form of a descriptive text and explaining the

ability to self-assess in speaking to the 7th grade students at the school. This study

aims to determine the ability of understanding to assess themselves in speaking in

grade 7 students. The schedule of research activities can be seen in Table 4.3

c. Analysis of Research Results

Analysis of the data that has been obtained from interviews, observations

and other materials that can be reported by researcher about the use of self-

assessment techniques for grade 7 students of SMPN 6 Pasar Kemis, and the

researcher conducted the test to 15 students consisting of 5 high, 5 medium, and 5

From each question we can conclude that the students' ability to speak

English with clear sounds and words is more neutral than the other choices,

because students are aware of their abilities at a basic level. For students who can

express themselves when speaking English prefer neutral and disagree, because

there are some students who feel they can do this confidently, and there are also

students who disagree because they feel ashamed and afraid of being wrong so

they don't confident in expressing himself when speaking English. For students

who still lack vocabulary to speak English fluently, they prefer Disagree, because

the method in the class always gives the task of memorizing 10 vocabulary words

at each lesson meeting. For dareness to speak English in front of when the teacher

give a story telling assignment, more student to choose Disagree, because many

students are still not confident to speak English in front of the class, because they

are afraid there will be mistakes in speaking so that students do not dare to do

this. Believe in their English skills, more students choose neutral and disagree

because they are still unsure that their level of English skills is still at the base.

For more students choose Neutral in terms of easy of understanding when the

teacher explains the lesson, because some of them think that English is not easy

to understand, and not too difficult either. So they prefer neutral. The students that

always pay close attention when the teacher explains English material, they

prefer Disagree. Because more student think that English material is hard so thus
making them less interested in paying attention to the teacher when explaining

English lessons. The student prefer Neutral for do individual assignments well on

time, because some of them are diligent when doing assignments on time, and

some are late. If the student have free time, prefer Neutral because some of them

always use for study, or some of them use for other activity. And the last is many

students choose Disagree on wanting to improve learning English, because some

of them think that English learning is very difficult language than First Language.
