INTRODUCTION

MV MARIA (IMO: 9917828) is a Chemical/Oil Tanker which entered into service after her construction at
the HYUNDAI MIPO DOCKYARD, Ulsan South Korea, in 2022 with the following particulars:
− Deadweight (DWT) : 55202 tons
− Gross Tonnage (GRT) : 33817 tons
− Length Overall (LOA) : 183 m
− Breadth : 35
m

Currently the vessel is sailing under the flag of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

This cargo tank coating condition survey was requested by the owner to assess the current coating
condition and integrity of the cargo tanks in order to plan the possible coating upgrade or refurbishment
scope of work for the next scheduled drydocking.

The survey was carried out during her voyage through Suez Canal on the 29 th May 2023 after the
completion of the cargo discharging and cleaning operations of the tanks.

SCOPE

The purpose of this report is to document the current coating condition of each inspected Cargo Tank (CT)
and estimate the extent of any visible coating breakdown, corrosion, and type of coating defects, as well
as to recommend a suitable repair method and/or preventative measures if required.
Photographic reference is provided to support the observations made during this cargo tank survey.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The following cargo tanks were inspected during her voyage through Suez Canal on 29 th May 2023:

All cargo tanks were inspected from the tanktop and access ladder areas, hence only the tanktops,
lower stools/hoppers (up to approx. 2 metre height), and areas close to the access ladders in way of the
forward bulkheads were closely examined. All other upper areas i.e., upper bulkheads and deckheads
were visually assessed from distance. The inspections were conducted using a hand-held torch,
calibrated dry film thickness (DFT) gauge, scraper, penknife and a small ruler for measurement and
reference.
All available Cargo Tanks (CT) were subject to a thorough cleaning process prior to this survey, and all
tanks were confirmed as gas free and safe to enter prior to each inspection.

General findings:
During this current coating condition survey, it was observed that the following cargo tanks were subject
to significant coating defects, such as heavy areas of coating breakdown, corrosion, and blistering and as
such generally recommended for full coating refurbishment (excluding under deck areas).

The following cargo tanks also have larger areas of general coating breakdown and corrosion, but to a
lesser extent that above tanks and thus call for partial tank refurbishment scope.
6 Starboard

Remaining tanks also all have some smaller coating breakdown areas and repair needs.

The coating condition of each inspected cargo tank is provided in the section ‘Individual Cargo Tank
Coating Condition’ hereafter. However, below is an overview of the type and coating breakdown and
patterns observed:

Corrosion:
All cargo tanks were affected by corrosion to some extent. Both scattered and localised areas of corrosion
was observed and noted in each tank.
Scattered and localised corrosion spots were noted mostly in way of the bulkheads and tanktops. Most of
these areas of corrosion were the result of the coatings breaking down, broken blisters and detachment
of the coatings down to the substrate.
Cracking:
There was no cracking noted during the survey-
Blistering:
Both scattered and localized areas of intact blisters were observed in all inspected tanks. However,
broken blisters have been noticed too but in much lesser extent.
The most affected areas are in way of the lower areas of the tanks i.e., lower stools, tanktop and lower
bulkhead areas, in some tanks the blistering was extensive . The size varies from 2mm to 1 cm in diametar
Note: When scraped, the most of blisters contain liquid, however, some blisters were very brittle and dry
and when scraped contain no liquid.

Detachment:
There was a mix of scattered and localised spots of coating detachment observed. Most areas of
detachment were down to the substrate resulting in exposed corrosion. The most affected areas are in
way of the bulkheads, including the hoppers and lower stool areas of the bulkheads. However, it was also
observed on the tanktops but to a lesser extent. Some areas with Topcoat detachment have been noticed
too, the most affected areas are in way of the Tanktops and Lower stools/Hopper bulkheads.

Dry-film thickness (DFT) readings were conducted in all cargo tanks where access allowed. This was in way
of the tanktop and lower bulkhead/reachable areas only. These readings are recorded in this report.
Note: DFT measurements were taken with a DeFelsko PosiTector 6000 DFT Gauge with the following serial number:
403861.
