6.100 (/6.100) Abbas - Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

(Yet they ascribe as partners unto Him the jinn) they said: Allah, Exalted is He, and Satan are brothers and
partners: Allah is the Creator of human beings, beasts and cattle while Satan is the Creator of snakes,
scorpions and predatory beasts. This is the claim of the Magians, (although He did create them) and
command them to declare His divine Oneness, (and impute falsely, without knowledge) without knowledge,
argument or proof, (sons) as claimed by the Jews and Christians (and daughters unto Him) among the
angels and idols, as claimed by the Arab idolaters. (Glorified be He) He has exonerated Himself from having
children or partners (and high exalted) and He absolves Himself (above (all) that they ascribe (unto Him)) of
sons and daughters.

6.100 (/6.100) Jalal - Al-Jalalayn

Yet they ascribe to God (li’Llāhi, the indirect object) as associates (shurakā’a, the direct object, which is
substituted by [the following, al-jinn]) the jinn, since they obey them by worshipping graven images, even
though He created them: so how can they be associates? And they falsely impute to Him (read kharaqū or
kharraqū), that is, they invent, sons and daughters without any knowledge, saying, Ezra (‘Uzayr) is the son
of God, and the angels are the daughters of God. Glory be to Him — an affirmation of His transcendence —
and exalted be He above what they describe!, of Him having a child.

6.100 (/6.100) Kashani - Kashani

Yet they ascribe to God as associates the jinn, that is, they assign the jinn of illusion and imagination as
associates of God by their obedience and submission to them, when they know that God created them: how
then do they worship other than Himḍ And they falsely impute to Him, they are at variance in [their] pure
calumny, [ascribing to Him], sons, from the intellects, and daughters, from the souls, believing them to be

effective and to be disengaged entities like Him, generated from Him, without any knowledge, on their part
that these are His names and attributes that have no effect except through Him. Glory be to Him and exalted

6.100 (/6.100) Kathir - Ibn Al Kathir

Rebuking the Idolators

This Ayah refutes the idolators who worshipped others besides Allah and associated the Jinns with Him in
worship. Glory be to Allah above this Shirk and Kufr. If someone asks, how did the idolators worship the
Jinns, although they only were idol worshippers The answer is that in fact, they worshipped the idols by
obeying the Jinns who commanded them to do so. Allah said in other Ayat,

‫�ُ َﻭﻗَﺎَﻝ ﻻّﺗ ﱠِﺧَﺫﱠﻥ ِﻣْﻥ‬ ‫ ﻟﱠﻌَﻧَﻪُ ﱠ‬- ً ‫ﻁـﻧﺎ ً ﱠﻣِﺭﻳﺩﺍ‬ َ ‫ﻋﻭَﻥ ﺇِﻻﱠ‬
َ ‫ﺷْﻳ‬ ُ ‫ﻋﻭَﻥ ِﻣﻥ ُﺩﻭﻧِِﻪ ﺇِﻻﱠ ﺇِﻧَـﺛﺎ ً َﻭِﺇﻥ ﻳَْﺩ‬ ُ ‫ِﺇﻥ ﻳَْﺩ‬
‫ﺿﻠﱠﻧﱠُﻬْﻡ َﻭﻷ َُﻣﻧِّﻳَﻧﱠُﻬْﻡ َﻭﻻُّﻣَﺭﻧﱠُﻬْﻡ ﻓَﻠَﻳُﺑَﺗِ ُّﻛﱠﻥ َءﺍَﺫﺍَﻥ ﺍﻻﱞْﻧﻌَـِﻡ‬ ِ ‫ َﻭﻷ‬- ً ‫ﺻﻳﺑﺎ ً ﱠﻣْﻔُﺭﻭﺿﺎ‬ ِ َ‫ِﻋﺑَﺎِﺩَﻙ ﻧ‬
ً ‫� ﻓَﻘَْﺩ َﺧِﺳَﺭ ُﺧْﺳَﺭﺍﻧﺎ‬ ِ ‫ﻁـَﻥ َﻭِﻟﻳّﺎ ً ِّﻣﻥ ُﺩﻭِﻥ ﱠ‬ َ ‫ﺷْﻳ‬ ‫� َﻭَﻣﻥ ﻳَﺗ ﱠِﺧِﺫ ﺍﻟ ﱠ‬ ِ ‫َﻭﻻُّﻣَﺭﻧﱠُﻬْﻡ ﻓَﻠَﻳُﻐَﻳُِّﺭﱠﻥ َﺧْﻠَﻖ ﱠ‬
ً ‫ﻏُﺭﻭﺭﺍ‬ُ ‫ﻁـُﻥ ﺇِﻻﱠ‬ َ ‫ﺷْﻳ‬‫ ﻳَِﻌُﺩُﻫْﻡ َﻭﻳَُﻣﻧِّﻳِﻬْﻡ َﻭَﻣﺎ ﻳَِﻌُﺩُﻫْﻡ ﺍﻟ ﱠ‬- ً ‫ﱡﻣﺑِﻳﻧﺎ‬
(They invoke nothing but female deities besides Him, and they invoke nothing but Shaytan, a persistent
rebel! Allah cursed him. And he Shaytan said: "I will take an appointed portion of your servants. Verily, I will
mislead them, and surely, I will arouse in them false desires; and certainly, I will order them to slit the ears of
cattle, and indeed I will order them to change the nature created by Allah.'' And whoever takes Shaytan as a
protector instead of Allah, has surely suffered a manifest loss. He Shaytan makes promises to them, and
arouses in them false desires; and Shaytan's promises are nothing but deceptions. ) 4:117-120 and,

‫ﺃ َﻓَﺗ َﺗ ﱠِﺧﺫُﻭﻧَﻪُ َﻭﺫُِّﺭﻳﱠﺗ َﻪُ ﺃ َْﻭِﻟﻳَﺂَء ِﻣﻥ ُﺩﻭﻧِﻰ‬

(Will you then take him (Iblis) and his offspring as protectors and helpers rather than Me) 18:50 Ibrahim said
to his father,

ً ‫ﺻﻳّﺎ‬ َ ‫ﺷْﻳ‬
َ ‫ﻁـَﻥ َﻛﺎَﻥ ِﻟﻠﱠﺭْﺣَﻣـِﻥ‬
ِ ‫ﻋ‬ َ ‫ﺷْﻳ‬
‫ﻁـَﻥ ﺇِﱠﻥ ﺍﻟ ﱠ‬ ِ َ‫ﻳﺄ َﺑ‬
‫ﺕ ﻻَ ﺗ َْﻌﺑُِﺩ ﺍﻟ ﱠ‬
("O my father! Worship not Shaytan. Verily! Shaytan has been a rebel against the Most Beneficent (Allah).'')
19:44 Allah said,

‫ َﻭﺃ َِﻥ ﺍْﻋﺑُُﺩﻭﻧِﻰ َﻫـَﺫﺍ‬- ‫ﻋُﺩﱞﻭ ﱡﻣِﺑﻳٌﻥ‬ ‫ﺃ َﻟَْﻡ ﺃ َْﻋَﻬْﺩ ﺇِﻟَْﻳُﻛْﻡ ﻳﺑَِﻧﻰ َءﺍَﺩَﻡ ﺃ َﻥ ﻻﱠ ﺗ َْﻌﺑُُﺩﻭﺍْ ﺍﻟ ﱠ‬
َ ‫ﺷﻳ‬
َ ‫ﻁـَﻥ ﺇِﻧﱠﻪُ ﻟَُﻛْﻡ‬
‫ﻁ ﱡﻣْﺳﺗ َِﻘﻳٌﻡ‬ ٌ ‫ﺻَﺭ‬ ِ
(Did I not ordain for you, O Children of Adam, that you should not worship Shaytan. Verily, he is a plain
enemy to you. And that you should worship Me. That is a straight path.) 36:60-61 On the Day of

Resurrection, the angels will proclaim,

‫ﺕ َﻭِﻟﻳﱡﻧَﺎ ِﻣﻥ ُﺩﻭﻧِِﻬْﻡ ﺑَْﻝ َﻛﺎﻧُﻭﺍْ ﻳَْﻌﺑُُﺩﻭَﻥ ﺍْﻟ‬

‫ِﺟﱠﻥ ﺃ َْﻛـﺛ َُﺭُﻫﻡ ِﺑِﻬﻡ ﱡﻣْﺅِﻣﻧُﻭَﻥ‬Donate َ ‫ﺳْﺑَﺣـﻧََﻙ ﺃ َﻧ‬

(Glorified be You! You are our Protector instead of them. Nay, but they used to worship the Jinn; most of
them were believers in them.) 34:41 This is why Allah said here,

‫ﺷَﺭَﻛﺂَء ﺍْﻟِﺟﱠﻥ َﻭَﺧﻠَﻘَُﻬْﻡ‬ ِ ‫َﻭَﺟﻌَﻠُﻭﺍْ ﱠ‬

(Yet, they join the Jinns as partners in worship with Allah, though He has created them.) 6:100, Alone
without partners. Consequently, how is it that another deity is being worshipped along with Him As Ibrahim
said,

‫ َﻭ ﱠ‬- ‫ﻗَﺎَﻝ ﺃ َﺗ َْﻌﺑُُﺩﻭَﻥ َﻣﺎ ﺗ َْﻧِﺣﺗ ُﻭَﻥ‬

‫�ُ َﺧﻠَﻘَُﻛْﻡ َﻭَﻣﺎ ﺗ َْﻌَﻣﻠُﻭَﻥ‬
("Worship you that which you (yourselves) carve While Allah has created you and what you make!'')
37:95-96 Allah alone is the Creator without partners. Therefore, He Alone deserves to be worshipped
without partners. Allah said next,

‫ﺕ ِﺑﻐَْﻳِﺭ ِﻋْﻠٍﻡ‬
ٍ ‫َﻭَﺧَﺭﻗُﻭﺍْ ﻟَﻪُ ﺑَِﻧﻳَﻥ َﻭﺑَﻧَﺎ‬
(And they Kharaqu (attribute falsely) without knowledge, sons and daughters to Him.) Allah mentions the
misguidance of those who were led astray and claimed a son or offspring for Him, as the Jews did with
`Uzayr, the Christians with `Isa and the Arab pagans with the angels whom they claimed were Allah's
daughters. Allah is far holier than what the unjust, polytheist people associate with Him. The word, Kharaqu,
means `falsely attributed, invented, claimed and lied', according to the scholars of the Salaf. Allah's
statement next,

‫ﺻﻔُﻭَﻥ‬ َ ‫ﺳْﺑَﺣـﻧَﻪُ َﻭﺗ َﻌَـﻠَﻰ‬

ِ َ‫ﻋﱠﻣﺎ ﻳ‬ ُ
(Be He Glorified and Exalted above (all) that they attribute to Him.) means, He is holier than, hallowed, and
Exalted above the sons, rivals, equals and partners that these ignorant, misled people attribute to Him.

6.97-103 (/6.97-103) Maududi - Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi - Tafhim al-Qur'an

That is, "We have made clear the Signs which show conclusively that there is only One Allah and that none
else has the Divine attributes or powers and none else is entitled to any of the Divine rights. However, those
who lack knowledge cannot reach the Reality by means of these Signs; only those who observe the
phenomena of Nature in a rational way can attain this precious wealth. "

That is, Allah has created the whole human race from one single being, Adam, who was the first man.

That is "Only Men of understanding can find clear Signs of the Reality in the creation of human race and in
the different functions allotted to man and woman for its reproduction at the different stages of human life

from birth to death. But those, who live like animals and hanker after the fulfillment of the lusts of the flesh,
can see nothing worthwhile even in these Signs."

That is, in spite of these clear Signs, some people have set up as His partners some hidden beings that are
merely the creations of their own imagination and whims. They have gone so far in their ignorance as to
allot different powers and duties to them in the management of the universe and in determining the destiny
of man. For instance, one has been made the good of rain and another of vegetation; one is the goddess of
wealth and another of disease, etc. Such absurd beliefs have been prevalent among all polytheistic peoples
about spirits, devils, monks, gods and goddesses.

The pagan Arabs called the angels "daughters" of God. Likewise some mushrik communities have invented
even a genealogical tree of gods and goddesses descending from God.

6.100 (/6.100) Wahidi - Asbab Al-Nuzul by Al-Wahidi

(Yet they ascribe as partners unto Him the jinn…) [6:100]. Al-Kalbi said: “This verse was revealed about the
atheists who claimed that Allah and Satan were two brothers; that Allah was the creator of human beings,
beasts and cattle whereas Satan was the creator of vipers, predatory animals and scorpions. Hence Allah’s
saying (Yet they ascribe as partners unto Him the jinn)”.
