down in obeisance unto him." (al-Hijr:29)

his part no firm resolve. (Ta-Ha:115)

soul. If it is not removed, it remains and thus hundreds of black impressions make the whole
region of the heart black. It is the duty of every man to remove these black impressions by
washing them with the water of tears and repentance.” (Mishkat al-Masabih, 3:760).

◼ The Greater Jihad (‫)جهاد االكبر‬

◼ After coming back from one of his battlefields, the Prophet SAW said, “You have come forth
in the best way of coming forth: you have come from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad,”
they asked, “And what is the greater jihad?” He replied, “The striving of Allah’s servants
against their idle desires.”

◼ Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA): The Prophet SAW said, “Religion is very easy and whoever
overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not
be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be
rewarded; and gain strength by offering the prayers in the mornings, afternoons and during
the last hours of the nights.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

◼ While we were one day sitting with the Messenger of Allah (SAW) there appeared before us
a man dressed in extremely white clothes and with very black hair. No traces of journeying
were visible on him, and none of us knew him. He sat down close by the Prophet (SAW),
rested his knees against his, put his palms on his thighs, and said, “O Muhammad! Inform me
about Islam.” Said the Messenger of Allah (SAW), “Islam is that you should testify that there
is no deity save Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger, that you should perform salat,
pay the zakat, fast during Ramadhan, and go on Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House (the Ka’bah at
Makkah), if you can find a way to it.” Said he, “You have spoken truly.” We were astonished
at his thus questioning him and telling that he was right, but he went on to say, “Inform me
about Iman.” He answered, “It is that you believe in Allah and His angels and His books and
His messengers and in the Last Day, and in predestination, both in its good and its evil.” He
said, “You have spoken truly.” Then he (the man) said, “Inform me about Ihsan.” He (the
Messenger of Allah) answered, “It is that you should serve Allah as though you could see
Him, for though you cannot see Him yet He sees you.”

◼ Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA): Allah’s Messenger SAW said, “The example of a believer is
that of a fresh tender plant; from whatever direction the wind comes, it bends it, but when
the wind becomes quiet, it becomes straight again. Similarly, a believer is afflicted with

◼ It is reported on the authority of ‘Abd ar-Rahman b. Sa’id b. Mawhib that ‘Aishah (RA) asked,
“O Messenger of God, who are `Those who give that which they give with hearts full of fear
[because they will return to their Lord]’ (23:60)? Are they people such as the man who steals
and commits adultery and drinks wine?” He answered, “No, it is the man who fasts and prays
and gives charity while fearing that it might not be accepted from him.”

◼ Ibn al-Mubarak said, “That which arouses fear so that it comes to abide in the heart is
continual observation (‫)مراقبة‬, secretly and openly.”

◼ Abu ‘Uthman said, “Sincerity of fear is abstaining from sins, inwardly and outwardly.”

◼ Narrated by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (RA) and Abu Huraira (RA): The Prophet SAW said, “No
fatigue, no disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it
were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)

◼ Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA): Allah’s Messenger SAW said, “If Allah wants to do good to
somebody, He afflicts him with trials.” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

◼ Hope (‫)الرجاء‬

"O my sons! go ye and enquire about Joseph and his brother, and never give up hope of
Allah's Soothing Mercy: truly no one despairs of Allah's Soothing Mercy, except those who
have no faith." (Yusuf: 87)

◼ Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA): The Prophet SAW said, “When Allah created the creation, He
wrote in His Book that is placed on the Throne with Him, and He prescribed for Himself:
‘Verily My Mercy has overcome My anger.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

◼ Narrated by Anas (RA): I heard the Prophet SAW saying, “On the Day of Resurrection I will
intercede and say, ‘O my Lord! Admit into Paradise (even) those who have faith equal to a
mustard seed in their hearts.’ Such people will enter Paradise, and then I will say, ‘O my Lord!
Admit into Paradise (even) those who have the least amount of faith in their hearts.’” (Sahih
al-Bukhari)

◼ Narrated Anas (RA): I heard Allah’s Messenger SAW saying, “Allah the Exalted has said: ‘O son
of Adam! I shall go on forgiving you so long as you pray to Me and aspire for My forgiveness
whatever may be your sins. O son of Adam! I do not care even if your sins should pile up to
the sky and should you beg pardon of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam! If you come
to Me with an earthful of sins and meet Me, not associating anything with Me in worship, I
will certainly grant you as much pardon as will fill the earth.’” (At-Tirmidhi)

◼ Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA): I heard Allah’s Messenger SAW said, “I swear by Allah that I
seek Allah’s Pardon and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.” (Sahih al-
Bukhari)

◼ Abu Ali ar-Rudhbari said, “Fear and hope are like the two wings of a bird. When they are
equal, the bird is balanced and his flight is perfect. When one of them is lacking, this makes
the bird lose its ability to fly. When both fear and hope are missing, the bird plummets to its
death.”
