Introduction

• Tidal energy is form of hydropower that convert the obtained

energy from tides into useful power *electricity*
• Tidal energy is a renewable and sustainable source of energy
that is produced by the surge of ocean waters during the rise
and fall of tides.
What is tides?
The alternate rising and falling of the sea,
usually twice in each day at a particular place,
due to the attraction of the moon and sun.:
Types of tides

High tides Low tides

Main parts of tidal power plant

There are three main parts of tidal power plant.

o The first being the barrage, holding the water back during high
tides.
o The second part is the sluice gate*other device for controlling the
flow of water* that let water through the third part.
o Third part consist of turbine and generator, resulting in electricity
generation
1.Tidal Barrage

• Tidal barrages can be used

to prevent flooding of low-
lying areas - areas that
already are at a high risk of
flooding - by holding back
or releasing water as
necessary.
2.Sluice gate
• The sluice gate are left
open during high tides
and closed during low
tides to create water
differential.
• Creating a potential
difference that power
the turbine when water
is released
3.Tidal stream
generator

• Tidal stream generator are very

similar to wind turbines except their
below the water surface instead of
above surface or land.
• The turbine and generator converts
the movement of water coming from
change in tides into electricity.
• Water is 830 times denser than the
air therefore can generates electricity
at lower speed than wind turbines
Advantages

o Tidal energy is a renewable resource. Unlike fossil

fuels.
o Tidal turbines are completely invisible from shore. This
means that they do not spoil the natural beauty of the
coast.
o Tidal power is predictable. The amount of energy that
can be generated by a tidal stream depends on the time
of day and the phase of the moon.
Disadvantages

o The high costs of tidal energy. Most people are unaware of the
high costs of tidal energy.
o The need for a strong tidal current The strength of the tidal
current depends on several factors, including the location and
geometry of the coastline, the depth and shape of the ocean floor
etc.
o The impact on the environment One major concern is that tidal
turbines could kill marine life. Some experts worry that the
spinning blades could chop up fish and other creatures.
