1.0 INTRODUCTION

Project Description
This project involves the replacement works of twenty-nine (29) lift units and other related works
at Apartment A, Pangkalan TLDM Lumut, Perak. The blocks involved in this project are A1, A3,
A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10, A11, A12, A13, A14, A25 and A26.
The project scope includes dismantling of the old lifts, installation of the new lifts, obtaining
approval from the JKKP, and other related works. The main priority of the project team is to
complete the project within the allocated budget and time as per contract.
The project duration for this project is 97 weeks from the date of commencement. Whereas the
defect liability period is a year from the date of handover to client. In this project, the lift model
of ACRA-PA17-C090 from Sigma Elevator will be supplied.

Objective
The purpose of this work method statement is to provide guidance of the painting works used in
the project.

2.0 HAZARD IDENTIFICATION


In order to identify hazards in organized fashion, they have been grouped into three categories.
The most common hazards that may occur during the process include:
1. Slip, trip, or fall
A person can slip, trip or fall to the ground as a result of
unexpected change in the contact between the feet and the
ground. Examples of these hazards are:

 Slippery floors
 Poor footing
 Inappropriate footwear

2. Contact with harmful chemicals


A person can be exposed or remain inhaling the harmful chemicals
for an extended period of time while doing task. This may result
breathing difficulty, convulsions, or unconscious. Examples of
these hazards are:

 Release of toxic fumes


 Mixing of chemical reactions
 In contact with chemicals

3. Struck by a moving object or hit an object


This hazard involves object in motion or people in motion, such
as being struck by a moving object, counterweight or material
falling on a person. Examples of these hazards are:

 Hoisting rope and sheave


 Unguarded lift car
 Unsecured or slips of material

3.0 SAFETY PRECAUTION

Follow the Covid-19 SOP as suggested by KKM and wear the


required minimum PPE such as safety helmet, vest, gloves,
and safety shoes. Additionally, wear the additional PPE when
appropriate.

Maintain a good housekeeping practice at site. Make


sure that all the construction materials and equipment
are stored properly when not in use to prevent materials
damage as well as slip or trip hazards.

Use appropriate tools or machines when lifting. Tasks


that require lifting more than 25 kg should be supported
by tools or machines to limit the potential injuries.

Conduct safety audit and procedures to report,


evaluate, and address any accidents or near misses that
occur at the site.

6.0 WORK METHODOLOGY


Prework
1. Prepare the necessary paperwork and documentations related to painting works.
2. Submit the proposed method statement for the painting work to the Superintendent
Officer for approval.
3. Obtain S.O.’s approval for the paint colour used in the specified location prior to the
commencement of work.
4. Colour chart indicating list of materials and applications for each coat of each sample shall
be submitted for approval prior to the physical works on site.
5. Discuss with the subcontractor and other relevant parties about the job scope.
Before Work Procedure
1. Obtain building’s permission to conduct site survey and preparation works.
2. Conduct briefing with all relevant parties (supervisor, sub-contractors, and applicators) to
ensure they fully understand the work requirements.
3. Place order of the materials and equipment needed for the painting work.
4. Manufacturer’s technical information must be provided by supplier such as label analysis,
instruction for handling, storing, and applying each material for use in this process.
5. Prepare the work area according to the site condition prior to the painting work.
6. Make good of the surfaces / cement rendered if needed and make sure the surfaces are
clean, dry and free from any contamination to secure lasting adhesion. This includes make
good of the surface such as cement render on the affected area.
7. Ensure sufficient signage and notice for the planned works.
8. Ensure the area of painting work properly barricade and floor covered to avoid any paint
spilling on the floor especially at lobby area.
Mid-work Procedure
1. The temperature of the paint should be kept at minimum 7 °C above the dew point of the
air, measured in the vicinity of the substrate.
2. Good ventilation is usually required in confined areas to ensure proper drying.
3. The moisture content in the substrate should not exceed 85% (by weight).
4. The primer and paint should not be exposed to oil, chemicals or mechanical stress until
fully cured.
5. The work area shall be properly illuminated or have good lighting to ensure the work can
be carried out well.

6. The application of painting are as follows:


a) Motor Room and Lobby Wall
- applicators shall apply one layer of appropriate primer and followed by two layers
of appropriate paint according to the surface applied.
- The primer is recommended to be dried at least 1.5 hours before the next paint
can be applied.
- Once completed, the paint shall be left dried for two days at minimum before it
can be permanently exposed to the intended environment
- Barricade tape and safety cone will be placed to prevent people from touching the
wall before it completely dried

b) Motor Room Floor and Lift Pit


- For the application of epoxy at lift pit and lift motor room floor, apply one layer of
1mm thick epoxy primer and followed by two layers of 1mm thick epoxy paint.
- The wall will be painted first before epoxy is applied on the floor. Therefore, no
floor protection is needed during painting.

c) Metal Parts
- For the application of metal part on the new equipment, apply one layer of
appropriate primer and followed by layer of appropriate paint according to the
approval code.
- For the application of metal part on the existing equipment, the surface will be
scraped first to take out the old paint then apply with appropriate primer and
followed by layer of appropriate paint according to the approval code.

After Work Procedure


1. Clean the work area and maintain a good housekeeping practice.
2. Disposal of material spillages or empty packaging should be in accordance with local
waste disposal authority regulations.
3. Ensure the waste is collected regularly and disposed-off at the approved dumpsite.
