Electricity and Circuits(G6)

Handout

I. Short answer questions.

1. What is electric current?

Electric current is a form of energy. It can be changed to other forms of energy such as light
energy in a bulb, heat energy in a water heater, etc.,

2. What will happen to a bulb in a circuit that contains two cells a conducting wire, and
a bulb?

Bulb can glow continuously until the battery gets vanished.

3. Why is solar power becoming important?

It is a renewable resource, pollution free and free of cost.

4. Why must we not touch bare wires with wet hands?

We will get electric shock.

5. What are some of the uses of small solar cells?

Small solar cells or panels are used in many ways. They can power watches and calculators.
They are used for recharging gadgets where electricity is not available.

6. How does hydroelectric power work?

Hydroelectric power plants use the power of water. Water falling from a dam on a river turns
a machine called hydraulic turbine attached to an electric generator. This produces electricity
for our houses, offices, malls and industries.

II. Distinguish between the following.

1.An open switch and a closed switch

An open switch A closed switch

An open switch can open the circuit. A closed switch can closes the circuit.
It can stop the flow of electricity. It allows the electricity to flow through the
devices.
2. Conductors and insulators

Conductors Insulators
Materials that allow electricity to flow Materials that do not allow electricity to
through freely are called conductors. flow through freely are called insulators.
Example: Gold Example:Wood
3. Primary and secondary cell

Primary cell Secondary cell

A primary cell is a cell that is used only A secondary cell is a cell that is used again
once. and again.
Ex: Dry cell Ex: Mobile phone battery.
C. Long answer questions.

1. With the help of a labelled diagram explain how an electric torch works.

 A torch is made of casing that holds one or more dry cells.

 It has a glass surface in the from behind which lies a reflector and a bulb.
 One of the terminals of the bulb touches the positive terminal of the cell/battery.
 At the side, there is a sliding switch that slides to make or break contact with the two
ends of a metal strip.
 This metal strip joins the other terminal of the bulb of the negative terminal of the
cell/battery via a metal spring.
 When we slide the switch, the circuit is closed and the bulb lights up.

2. Draw a circuit that contains a battery of three cells, two bulbs, an open switch, and a
conductor. Label each part neatly.
3. Write four important safety rules we must follow while using electricity.

 Electrical switches should not touch with wet hands.

 Naked wires should not be used in electric sockets.

 Too many devices should not be plugged into one socket.

 Any wire where the insulation has become worn out, must be changed.

 Electricity form generators or from a power socket should not be used for
experiments.

4. How do electricians protect themselves from shock while working? Describe any five
uses of insulators in our households and state why they are important.

 When an electrician is working with wires and plugs, the tools he uses have plastic
handles. He wears rubber slippers or shoes with rubber soles. Rubber and plastic do
not allow electricity to flow through. They protect the electrician from shocks.

Uses of insulators

 Electric plug
 Insulating wire
 Separator
 Electric tools with plastic handles
 Rubber gloves

Importance of insulator

Insulators are protects us from electric shocks.
